Temporary Hit Points
Certain effects give a character temporary hit points. When a character gains temporary hit points, note his current hit point total. When the temporary hit points go away the character’s hit points drop to his current hit point total. If the character’s hit points are below his current hit point total at that time, all the temporary hit points have already been lost and the character’s hit point total does not drop further.

When temporary hit points are lost, they cannot be restored as real hit points can be, even by magic.

If I have fast healing and temporary hit points, will my fast healing give me back the temporary hit points if some are removed via damage (assuming their duration hasn't ended yet)? Because temporary hit points work just like real hit poitns except where noted, I have reason to believe that the last line of the above text only refers to restoring the temporay hit points after their duration has run out. Might I be right on this matter? If not, how might you run a spell or spells that grants fast healing and temproary hit points? I have an example spell shown below for interpretation purposes:

Hydraform
Transmutation (Polymorph)
Level: Sorcerer/wizard 7
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 swift action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 round/level (D)

Your body begins to expand and split apart as a dozen snake-like heads explode from your now scaly shoulders. Your form reshapes into that of a terrifying hydra.

You take on the form and abilities of a 12-headed hydra (MM 157 (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hydra.htm)). You gain 60 temporary hit points, which disappear at the end of the spell's duration. You do not gain the hydra's ability to regrow new heads, but otherwise function as a hydra in all other respects. See the description of the new polymorph subschool (PH2 95 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060501a&page=5)) for more details.

nope it will not. :) Nothing can restore temporary hit points.

Most people these days have played games like Goldeneye, so I'll use that as an example.

Your health in that game is reminiscent of hit points (except in this example, you don't have fast healing). The body armor (shield in later games) is identical to temporary hit points (though more recent games break this analogy, in that you always have a shield and it auto-recharges, which isn't the case with temporary hit points).

If you have temporary hit points left (armor, and take damage, they're lost first. Healing effects (picking up health) cannot restore the temporary hit points you have lost, but can restore any damage over and above that (health) -- this is true of fast healing as well. If you have some temporary hit points left (50% armor, say), and you are subject to an effect that grants temporary hit points (pick up a new set of armor), they don't stack (that is, you only get 100% armor, which is what the pickup granted -- you don't get 150% here), as only the better one applies.

I really hate having to resort to such an explanation, but this truly is the best I can provide.

In the case of Hydraform, you gain a 60-hit point 'buffer' of sorts that's lost first. If you had any damage going into the battle (on your regular hit points), it heals with the fast healing; if you were perfectly healthy, you'd have to take REAL hit point damage before the fast healing kicked in (meaning you'd have to eat up 60 points of damage and then some more).

Tempest Stormwind makes a good explanation in the long form. The shorter answer is no; temporary HP cannot be restored though some effects can grant more temporary HP (a vampire's slam attack, for example). If something happens that would normally add temporary HP then you get them, but healing of any type (fast healing, regeneration, cure spells, etc) only heal normal HP and not temporary HP. Once temporary HP are lost then they're simply gone.

Temporary Hit Points
Certain effects give a character temporary hit points. When a character gains temporary hit points, note his current hit point total. When temporary hit points are lost, they cannot be restored as real hit points can be, even by magic.

Note the underlined passage. It indicates that temporary hit points are considered "lost" when a) the effect runs out, or b) damage has removed them. Therefore, the last sentence includes damage.

No I don't think that you can heal temporary hit points.
