can you wear bracers as greaves? if so can you "stack" the benefits from both the greaves of armor and the regular bracers of armor?

The two wouldn't stack since both would be providing armour bonuses.

Named bonuses of the same type do not stack.

(Except dodge.)

(EDIT: I fixed it the correct type of bonus.)

Sure, but they still fill the bracers slot.

no they don't stack, because you can't wear two sets of bracers, and they both provide the same enhancement bonus.

If they were, in fact, the same thing taking up a different slot, they'd likely cost a lot more. If you look in the DMG, it explains that the slots are supposed to correspond to the given benefits (certain slots for certain benefits, i.e. neck slot for nat. armor bonuses, etc.). If an item occupies an abnormal slot for its benefit, it is recommended that it cost more for balance purposes (It's in a sidebar sorry, I don't remember the page).

Actually, it is feasible that an item for another body slot could act like bracers of armor. Its more expensive, IIRC, but not disallowed. And even if two items that provide the same type of bonus are worn at the same time, you still get the bonus from one of them. The real catch is the stacking of bonuses thing.

MIC lists bracer of armour's affinity slots as arms and body. Anything else will likely incur the x1.5 price multiplier for non-associated slot.:)

Bracers of armor don't provide an enhancement bonus. They provide an armor bonus.

Other than that nit pick, you're correct.

Since there is no "Legs" slot for magic items, the cost to create such an item would be double, not 1.5x, as posted above.

Just say it takes up the feet slot but is worn on the legs (assuming it takes the form of anklets or something, rather than shoes).

Doubling the price would be akin to making it slotless, which means that you can pretty much wear it anywhere you want, not just legs.

I would say it fills the bracer slot but is worn on the ankles. Why not?

Because... I think the main point is to wear two sets...

I think the foot slot seems most logical. Wearing them there means your magical footwear is in use, so no magical boots for you, young man. Using the arms slot means "You can't wear these bracers because of those things around your ankles." which seems clumsy, at the very least.

As for bonuses stacking, it seems to me that magical items worn on or near the feet might give a Dodge bonus to AC. Call them "The Greaves Of Being Actually Slightly To The Left"! :D

That's just a thought that popped into my head. I'm to lazy right now to look up any rules or do math or anything.

Peace.

But you can't wear two sets, even if one is on your ankles and called "bracers." There's only one bracer slot, it doesn't matter if it's on your forearms or your ankles or covering your ass cheeks. ;)

correct, but then it is no longer bracers of armor, but leg coverings of armor which happen to coast 1.5X as much.

Worn by the prince who has no name, but his work is identifiable by his unique magical glyph?

Were I the DM, I would allow you to have shinguards of armor (or whatever you wanted to call them) that functioned exactly like bracers of armor -- including taking up the "bracers" slot. I just don't really see the big deal about wearing them somewhere else, as long as the slot is still occupied.

Similarly, I once allowed a player to wear a pair of earrings that were magical (I forget exactly what they were), but they still took up one of the "ring" slots. Same deal.

Like someone pointed out earlier, I think the point is that the OP is thinking of wearing *two* sets of bracers.

As for letting an item be on a different part of the body, that's just fluff to make the game interesting - which I think is cool, BTW, especially that thing about ear rings. But if we're talking about "the rules," wearing bracer-type things on your legs would cost more.

Which is why I was clear (I thought) that the ones on your shin would count as your only set of bracers. *shrug*

i'm talking about a set of bracers of one kind and a set of greaves (bracers) of another kind. originally i meant 2 of the same type. :D

I wouldn't allow that, either. One set of bracers, regardless of where you wear it.

04-28-08, 04:28 PM
why is that? magic is magic. it's not like they say "oh look another set of bracers like me. well i'll just use my magic to make those not work."? :P
that's one thing i never understood about rings. what "causes" rings not to function if you wear more than one on each hand?
Zherog

04-28-08, 04:41 PM
You can wear two rings, actually. :)

What causes a pile of bat poo to turn into a Fireball? Magic. Magic is magic, that's it. It has its own rules and regulations. That's why you can only wear two rings (and an attempt at balance, of course). That said, however, you (or your DM) are free to change any rule you wish.

To answer the question, I'd allow you to wear bracers on the legs at the increased cost. It would take up your bracer slot and you could not wear another set of magical bracers on your forearms. If you wanted to wear a non-magical set for the look, I'd have no issue. I'd even let you wear two sets of non-magical bracers without a second thought. Or magical ones on the arms and non-magical on the legs. It seems, however, as though you are trying your very best to gain the benefit twice, not trying to replicate a look. If you were then bracers shouldn't even be on your list as what Edy said was right- the picture you linked to shows a man in Padded Armor. He isn't wearing metal at all. Now, you could just be really set on the idea and I could be wrong. If that's the case, try listening to the advice and reasons given. They've pretty much all seemed sound to me.

According to the quiz that I took recently I'm a LG Elf Paladin.
Ironically, the first character I ever played, months ago, was a LG Elf Paladin.

If you want to wear your bracers on your shins instead, fine! Have fun!

But you don't get 2 WORKING sets of bracers. Want one set of bracers that works and another set with no mechanical benefit, by all means have FUN with the way look look! Thats encouraged! But you don't get extra slots and bonuses from finding creative places to put them!

You cant have a ring of protection on your left hand, a ring of swimming on your left and decided that to get a ring of sustenance on you you have your nipple pierced with it!
