Hello everyone! I just stated Dungeons and Dragons with two other friends, and I've decided to become the DM. I was just wondering about this campaign idea. It's capture the flag in Dungeons and Dragons. There's a large board, and on 2 parts of the boards are two bases, each one having a flag. Could two players play against a team of monsters, what if two DMs each made a team of NPCs and put them in the campaign? Just put down your opinion about this campaign. THanks :D

Sounds more suited to a game of D&D Minis. As a Minis game, it's perfectly appropriate. Especially the idea of two competing DMs, since that's basically what D&D Minis boils down to.

For a roleplaying game, however, I'd put a bit more thought into it (please don't take this as an insult, I'm not trying to say you haven't put thought into this, just that you could add so much more!).

Try to think of D&D (or any RPG) as a collective story. The DM sets the stage, and the players act out the roles of their characters on that stage, with the DM playing supporting, adversarial, or neutral roles and acting as a sort of judge or referee.

So in your setup, first think about it from a story perspective. What do the "flags" represent in the imaginary game world? Treasure? A powerful magic item? Hostages? The cure to the poison that was slipped in the Duke's wine? The King's personal banner (a literal flag, in other words)??? Who is the enemy, and why do they have this item? Why are the player characters charged with collecting and protecting this item?

D&D can be just about moving your mini across the tabletop and fighting whatever other minis happen to be on the board. But it is much more entertaining (at least to me) if there's a story involved. Use your imagination for the majority of the game, and only break out the maps and minis when combat errupts. And plan on ways for your players to win an adventure without resorting to comat. They might want to use Diplomacy, stealth, disguise, or other means to accomplish their goal, rather than just bashing and Magic Missiling their way past every obstacle.

I agree.

And really, if you wanna play CTF, go outside! On average, us gamers could do with some aerobiec activity. :D

Or, go play Halo :P

Really, D&D+CTF=

This sounds like a good board game idea but it is not DnD.

It also leads to encouraging my most hated DnD sterotype (besides the whole devil worship thing)

The one that goes like this:

"Yeah I play DnD. It is a great game"
"I like board games too!"

Arrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh.........Damn nonroleplayers!

DM124,

It is a great idea and it is an idea that is currently being done all over the internet. I run and Arena style game and have been for over a year now. I also have played this arena style (rpg) game via a large map/board and it is a ton of fun. Character level, develop personallities and friendships and enemies. It is a ton of fun.

Dungeons and Dragons has so many different directions it 'CAN' go, so my advise to you is don't limit your game to what other people say or think. Just follow your train of thoughts and make it what you want it to be and have fun with it. With D&D your imagination has no limits...
