Carpet/Broom of flying? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey everyone, first post here.

I'm in a fairly high magic campaign, and our DM has allowed us to pick any magical item under 22k GP (subject to approval). My character is a level 12 illumian wiz3/cleric3/theurge6. There's honestly not much for that price that I can find that I really, really want, so I was thinking of getting a carpet or broom of flying. Now, my question to you is twofold:

First, how exactly do these items work? The DMG says that they function as under an overland flight spell, but gives few other details. How would it work in combat? Does it take a move action for me to move it? It says I just control it by speech (for the carpet at least, the broom doesn't say one way or the other), so it would seem to be a free action--afterall, I'm not moving, or working at moving, so it seems like I wouldn't use my action. This doesn't matter that much to a caster, as I won't be full-round attacking much, but it would still be nice to know. Also, do these items have an AC? Hit points? How would enemies target them in combat? I don't want to buy one just to have it shredded in our first battle.

Second, is there something better that I should buy? He said basically any item 22k or under subject to approval. I'm open to suggestions :)

You can fly at a speed of 40 feet (30 feet if wearing medium or heavy armor, or if carrying a medium or heavy load) with average maneuverability. You can charge but you cannot run.

Your minimum forward speed is 20 (15 feet if wearing medium or heavy armor, or if carrying a medium or heavy load) but you cannot hover. You cannot move backwards, and you can turn 45° for every five feet forward you move.

Neither of these means of transportation are good for combat.

The carpet of flying can hover--the DMG specifically says that it can. That's the only reason I'm really considering it.

Sorry 'bout the oversight. I was using the overland flight spell.
I still wouldn't use a carpet of flying in combat. Too slow, and you're probably going to need a balance check every round. It is not the most stable of surfaces.

Oooo, good point about the balance check; I hadn't even thought of that. Well, any recommendations as to what I should do with my 22k? There's not much for an arcane caster for that amount...

Decanter of Endless Water...seriously I have found this to be an insanely useful magic item with a little imagination, of course it is only worth 9000gp, but there you go. There are lots of little gems under 22,000 (Boots of Levitation, Lyre of Building...oh Boccob's Blessed Book is a must for wizards, Horn of Blasting, and so forth), you just need to think of what is useful in the most situations.

ring of invisibility 20K
ring of force shield 8.5K
save your money for a ring of evasion when you gather 3K more.

Yeah, I'd much prefer to save the money, but that's not an option. Apparently we'll be getting rewards from the city we just saved, and they have a treasury of magical items or something. The ring of invisibility is a really good idea, I might go with that.
