| captianhowdy07-14-07, 08:11 PM | Im planning on designing a campaign based on the Castlevania series. Its going from 1-Epic so theres plenty of room for just about anything, so does anyone have any cool ideas for it? I was planning to have a few of the series characters as NPCs (Alucard, some belmont, ect) and try to include as much style from the actual games as possible |
| Artifact07-14-07, 08:34 PM | Purely for fun, here's a v.3.5 write-up I did for Alucard. The only game in the Castlevania series I ever played was SotN; if I ever had the chance to play the earlier games, I'd jump on it (never did care for the later games however). Alucard (Real name: Adrian Farenheights Tepes) The offspring of an unnatural union between Count Dracula and a human woman, Alucard possesses inhuman strength and dark magical powers. His weapon of choice is a sword and he uses a variety of them to serve his needs. He is an adept shapeshifter, commonly using the forms of wolf, bat, and mist to confuse and terrify his opponents. Alucard also relies heavily on ancient relics and magical items to perform elaborate magical attacks. Alucard CG male half-vampire/half-human, Fighter 1, Sorcerer 6, Eldritch Knight 2 Str 18 Dex 16 Con 10 Int 12 Wis 14 Cha 16 Armor Class 24 Hit Points 27 Fort +4, Ref +7, Will +7 Melee Attack +10/+5 (+4 Str) Ranged Attack +9/+4 (+3 Dex) (*) Charisma 20 (+5) with Twilight Cloak. Feats: Combat Expertise, Dodge, Endurance, Improved Initiative (bonus feat), Lightning Reflexes, Mobility, Toughness, Weapon Focus (longsword). Spells per Day: 6/7/7/5. Base DC = 13 + spell level. Caster level 7th. Spells Known: 0- resistance, ghost sound, disrupt undead, mage hand, arcane mark, detect magic, prestidigitation, read magic; 1st- burning hands, hypnotism, summon monster I, charm person, magic missile; 2nd- darkness, levitate, pyrotechnics; 3rd- fireball, vampiric touch. Signature Possessions: Alucard Sword (+2 keen longsword), Alucard Shield (+1 fortification heavy steel shield), Alucard Mail (+1 invulnerability half-plate), Twilight Cloak (+4 cloak of charisma), Dragon Helm, Necklace of J (as periapt of wound closure). The Alucard Sword, Alucard Shield, and Alucard Mail are family heirlooms of Alucard’s mother, a human woman named Lisa. The Dragon Helm allows Alucard to cause fear upon all enemies viewing it, if he so desires (10 foot maximum range, DC 16). This power is a standard action that may be invoked once per day. Ability Increases: Wis 13 (4th), Wis 14 (8th). Design Notes: Alucard is the main character in the Playstation video game Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. He uses the “half-vampire” template detailed here. This template is designed with the Alucard write-up in mind and is intended to give him the vampire-like abilities he displays in the video game. It can easily be used in the creation of any similar character however. HALF-VAMPIRE (Template) The half-vampire is the half-mortal offspring of an unnatural union between a vampire and a human. A half-vampire can easily pass for a human (although he is normally quite pale). A half-vampire is almost always ignorant of his heritage; his occult legacy doesn’t usually manifest until puberty. Creating a half-vampire “Half-Vampire” is an inherited template that can be added to any giant, humanoid, or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the “base creature”). Unlike a true vampire, the creature type does not change to “undead”. It uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here. Special Qualities: A half-vampire retains all the special qualities of the base creature and those listed below: Alternate Form (Su): A half-vampire can assume the shape of a bat, dire bat, wolf, or dire wolf as a standard action. This ability is similar to a polymorph spell cast by a 12th level character, except that the half-vampire does not gain hit points for changing form and most choose from among the forms mentioned here. While in its alternate form, the half-vampire gains the natural weapons and extraordinary special attacks of its new form. It can remain in that form until it assumes another or until the next day. Damage Reduction (Su): A half-vampire has damage reduction 5/silver. Darkvision (Ex): A half-vampire gains darkvision with a range of 60 feet. If the base creature already had darkvision, use the greater range. Gaseous Form (Su): As a standard action, a half-vampire can assume gaseous form at will as the spell (caster level 5th), but it can remain gaseous indefinitely. Immunities (Ex): Half-vampires are invulnerable to vampire’s domination and suffer none of the weaknesses of true vampires. Light Sensitivity (Ex): Half-vampires are dazzled in bright sunlight or within the radius of a daylight spell. Resistances (Ex): A half-vampire has resistance to cold 5 and electricity 5. Slow Aging (Ex): Upon reaching maturity, a half-vampire ages at one-fourth of the base creature’s normal rate. Abilities: Increase fro the base creature as follows: Str +2, Dex +2, Cha +2. Skills: Half-vampires receive a +4 racial bonus to Bluff, Hide, Listen, and Move Silently, and Spot checks. Feats: Half-vampires gain Improved Initiative as a bonus feat. Challenge Rating: Same as the base creature +1. Alignment: Any (but usually evil). Advancement: By character class. Level Adjustment: Same as the base creature +4. |
| Von_Harbringer07-14-07, 08:39 PM | Suggest using Ravenloft for reference. Is it going to have strictly human for races or is it going to be based from Castlevania characters like Simon, Trevor, Ritcher, Grant, Sypha, and of course Alucard? |

There's also a thread on this in the D20 Videogames forum. |

| HighPriestMikhal07-15-07, 12:04 AM | Suggest using Ravenloft for reference. I'll second the Ravenloft reference. Plus here's a weird bit of trivia that few probably remember. The image on the cover of Castlevania 2 and the novel I, Strahd are very similar. If you're interested, here's the video game cover. http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Images/Scans/CV2/cv2-e.jpg And here's the novel cover. http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Images/Weird/CV2/dstrahd.gif |

I was thinking of they would ever remake Thundar the Barbarian for a cartoon or movie. I would say RPG but that would be like Rifts. http://www.rpgnow.com/products/WOTC/tsr9075.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/79/Cv2_nes.jpg/256px-Cv2_nes.jpg Castle Bran http://www.amogallery.com/catalog/DraculasCastle.jpg |

| bigsnarf07-15-07, 10:31 AM | Morning Star stats? would it be a flail with reach, or a spiked chain? |
| High Octane07-15-07, 10:35 AM | Simply put, whips suck as weapons. At least as a primary weapon. This may be a problem. |
| vardock07-15-07, 11:46 AM | You could make the whip an artifact that functions as a spiked chain. in fact in many of the games the "whip" was just that. I think there is a whip that deals lethal damage somewhere. you could make it a holy power whip. The holy damage form that would negate not having the base weapons damage being non lethal. Lood up holy power in the Epic level handbook. |
| HighPriestMikhal07-15-07, 12:33 PM | This is one I've thought about as well. A real morningstar is a spiked ball on a length of chain on a haft (basically, the D&D flail). A real flail is a segmented length of blades connected to a haft. But that's just reality. I've adapted the famous Flame Whip for my games. The Flame Whip is a +3 undead bane flaming burst light flail that can be wielded as a morningstar, except it has 10ft. reach, can be used to trip at +2, and can still be used against adjacent foes. The enchantment allows feats like Weapon Focus, Improved Critical, and others applied to light flail or morningstar to work on this weapon (but only once per feat). |
