Whenever I've seen posts on celebrity gamers, they mention relatively no-name actors like mike myers, or vin diesel, or robin williams. Today I've learned the dark gaming secret of a world class celebrity. SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS plays p&p, yeah you heard me right, a superstar like Spongebob is a gamer. I saw an episode of Spongebob called "midlife crusteatian" in which Spongebob, Patrick starfish and Mr Krabs take a break from the Krusty Krab to play an RPG called p&p; Patrick was dressed in chainmail and Mr Krabs had a pair of wizards hats, and Spongebob was in an elf suit, and they where all around a table with dice, pen and paper, books, a GM screen, minis, and a battle mat. The gaming scene was only a few seconds I had pause the show to confrim what I saw, but there is no denying it, Spongebob is a gamer. Now if a superstar like Spongebob can admit to gaming maybe we are looking new age where gaming is seen as cool!

Thanks Spongebob!!!

That's awesome advertisement. Even if you think spongebob is stupid, it's very popular among kids during their influential age as well as many adults. Did they do a little skit or was it just a quick scene with no "roleplaying" going on?

Tyveil- the gaming scene was only a few seconds; it was part of a montage scene in which Mr Krabs gets to see what Spongebob and Patrick do on a wild friday night.

As a side note I just learned that the voice actor for Mr Krabs is Clancy Brown, who also played "Kurgan" in Highlander. "THEIR CAN ONLY BE ONE SPONGEBOB, MUWAHAHAHA!!!"

Another note I'm not a Spongebob fanboy; just the dad of a four year old boy who thinks Spongebob is the best. I'm also big into painting fantasy minis and my son aways tells me to paint the bad guys on scooby-doo; he is not afraid of monsters because his dad will just paint them. After watching my son roll dice and move around warhammer figures while counting I thought that being a dad is going to only get better and better.

Kids arn't the only ones! My dad is 40 and HE watches it! (Though some of the newer episodes have been weak.) :)

Super Milk Chan I don't think its a stupid show. From the one episode I saw, it isn't coherent enough to be stupid. That's saying a lot.

Azul So your dad thinks D&D is a phase. He is probably right, I've only been playing for 25 years, I can only see playing for another 25 or so. To all those who don't like the sponge, my four year old son strongly disagrees withyou. I think the sponge isn't too bad. I'd rather sit through three seasons of spongebob than watch another single episode of cardcaptors.

Why is everybody always so down on the old DnD toon? I remember when that cartoon came out, I was a youngun, and I probably would never have bothered to play DnD had I never seen the cartoon. Albeit, I don't really remember the cartoon that well and I'm not sure how well it resembled DnD anyway.

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Man, why does everyone hate Spongebob? Anyways, yeah, I saw that episode. "Art thou feeling it Mr. Krabs." Of course, then there was the episode of Dexter's Lab that had him and some friends playing Monsters and Mazes. That was actually the first glimmer of D&D I ever saw.

Well, as you yourself said, you don't really remember the cartoon...lucky you. I think it had potential, but it was never realized. As is so often the case, they dumbed it down for the masses. I just found out that in the final episode (which was never made) Venger (the villian with one horn) was revealed to be the son of the little Dungeon Master guy, and one of the six kids was supposed to die, as well...I think the ranger. Now, that would have been a cool episode! I never said the publicity was bad...anything to get more players is fine...I just said the cartoon was (fairly) bad.

And I like both Sponge Bob and Invader Zim! Is this allowed?

They've cancelled Dexter's Lab, and it's been exiled to the graveyard hours of Cartoon Network. Damn though. Out of CN's three original cartoons, it was the best. Cow and Chicken is long gone, and Johnny Bravo is just a bunch of celebrity cameos now. Then again, we do have Megas XLR, which has a D&D reference somewhere, I know it!

Now that you mentioned D&D references in shows found on Cartoon Network:
In Ep.3 of Full Metal Alchemist the main characters are reading a book on alchemy (not that surprising), however if you look closely enough you can see "d20" and "PrC" and other D&D references in the text :D

Mr. Groening (who gave us the Simpsons and Futurama) has put some D&D references in his cartoons. I've heard that Gary Gygax even appears in a Futurama episode (with gray hair and ponytail, and rolling d20s every time a decision had to be made).

It had a lot of potential, my friend once ran a game where we encountered the kids from the D&D cartoon all grown up and harded to life in Greyhawk, Boby the barbarian had grown to Conan proportions, killed the cavalier and taken his shield, Hank the ranger was blowing holes in peoples chest with his magic bow, the thief was queen of the backstab with her cloak of elvenkind, and the wizard had finally gotten control over the hat.

As for the other cartoons:
Adult swim is the best
Toonami aint half bad
Zim is great

I pitched that idea to Dave Gross back when he was editor of Dragon but he thoguht there was no interest in the idea. I still think he was mad. Maybe I'll give it another shot with the new folks at Paizo. Hmm...
