| Zeboaster of Ordulin12-22-04, 12:29 PM | We have a pre-genned Wiz6/Sentinel of Barhai5. He thinks his Sentinel Levels should stack with his Wiz levels for purposes of gaining a Celestial familiar, but we disagree, as the reading of Sentinel of Barhai class is pretty clear that +1 spell caster level is for the purposes of casting spells only, not for things like familiars. Who is right? |
| CzarGarrett12-22-04, 01:05 PM | +1 caster level just means spells. Familiars are special abilities, and therefore, does not benefit from a +1 caster level. |
| Greyman12-22-04, 09:19 PM | Just so, the +1 spellcasting level does not count. Multiclass levels only stack for classes that have the Summon Familiar feature, such as Wizard and Sorcerer. If a prestige class does not grant the feature, then its levels simply do not count towards familiar abilities. (I know of no prestige class that does, by the way.) |

BTW, if I remember correctly, Sentinel of Baralai has the Animal companion class feature. If you'd like, you can have him forgo that feature in order to have his sentinel levels stack with his familiar levels. It would be a house rule on your part, but not a terrible stretch. |
| Bard of DorAr12-23-04, 11:09 AM | Um, the Sentinal Levels don't stack for Familiar abilities such as when they gain SR and such. However. I assume you mean the Celestial Familiar feat that says you have to be 7th level to nab a Mustvel? That'd count. The Celestial Familiar Feat specifically says "Required Caster Level" Nothing about that being a pure wizard level. |
