Hi to All....

Does any one remember a book for background called `Central Casting’, as it is not in print any more (or at least I don’t think it is!), do you think any one would mind if I did a web site out of it e.g. All the tables and character work sheet etc. as I think this would help a lot of people out with backgrounds, and I would like to try something like that.

I'm sure it would be very popular. I love my copy of the fantasy version of the Central Casting books. However, just because a book is out of print, does not mean that the publisher has given up its copyrights. Such a website, if done without the permission of the current copyright holder, would be a clear and actionable violation.

Sorry.

You're gonna have to bug Task Force Game, unless someone else is the new IP owner.

I thought they would jump at the chance to expose their Central Casting line to a much larger audience by making it d20-compatible. I still cherish my Heroes of Legend book.

Of course, diehard D&D fans would argue that the Hero Builder's Guidebook is good enough for 3e.

I have all 4 Central Casting books, and love them all.

But, as others have already told you, you need permission from the copyright holder for such a site, or you risk legal action against you.

Their website is gone, so I'm assuming they went out of business. The following information may be seriously outdated, but it's as current as I could find:

Address:
(USA) Task Force Games
PO Box 50145 Amarillo TX 79159-0145
(UK) Task Force Games UK
Unit S3 632 Radford Road Basford Nottingham NG7 7EE

Phone:
(USA) +1 (806) 372 1266
(UK) +44 (0)115 942 2289

Fax:
(USA) +1 (806) 372 1361
(UK) +1 (806) 372 1361

I'd say "pretty high". The company may not exist, but the people who created the system/wrote the books are most likely alive and holding onto the copyright. Afterall, they may decide to make a new company and re-release it.

Also, people are mean. As soon as someone realizes you're using/sharing copyrighted material on a website, all it takes is an email to the copyright holder, or to the server hosting your site, and you'll be gone before you know it.

Seriously, I think your idea is kind of cool, but I wouldn't risk a lawsuit, if I were you.

The link below confirms that TFG essentially stopped publishing in 1996, but does not specify who now owns the Central Casting IP.

I would ask around on forums at places like EN World or RPGNet.

Paul Jaquay was the original author/illustrator of the Central Casting books. He might know who has the current publications rights now that Task Force Games has folded.
