ImmortalBlueMage 09-01-05, 07:47 PM	I, as a rule, have stopped reading, participating in, or caring about alignment threads. This one is an exception though, since it's : A) Entirely hypothetical. and B) Something that I don't think has been brought up before. The traditional laws of alignment and good DMing say that changing alignment is a gradual process that should be handled delicately, and by inches and degrees. I wonder though, can a PC ever change alignments on the spot? For example, if a Nuetral Rogue, suddenly overcome with insatiable greed, stabs his partner in his sleep so that he can keep the artifact discovered that day for himself, I have trouble imagining he'd stay Nuetral, even if this was his first evil act.

In a moment of crisis, the monk, without thinking and while being manipulated by the BBEG, assists in killing one of his superiors at the monastery. Would this be enough to change him to LE and have him go back to the monastary and slaughter children?

Depends, does he felt remorse or did he like killing his superior? anyways, it does become at least neutral thanks to a) killing his superior and b) having a secret marriage. and iw is possible for sudden changes, in one night i went from NG to CN and i haven't been able to change back, not that i want to or anything. Don't ask.

Would this be enough to change him to LE and have him go back to the monastary and slaughter children? :rofl: however, this is a poor example as the monk in question has been manipulated by the BBEG for a lengthy period of time and the monks alignment had been slipping for a while. The change in question was not immediate. However, in answer to the OP, yes, it it possible for people/characters to "snap" and change alignments, outlooks, and mannerisms instantly. And there's always helms of opposite alignment out there...
Ringmereth 09-02-05, 06:27 PM	While it shouldn't be a frequent event, people do have sudden changes in their viewpoint. A good character who unexpectedly loses a family member or close friend might snap and suddenly be driven entirely by lust for vengeance. Similarly, a character motivated by an evil goal might accomplish it, only to find that it isn't fulfilling, and lose his or her evil alignment. There's nothing wrong with a major alignment change as the result of a life-changing event, but if it's happening every session, just call the character neutral or chaotic neutral until they figure out their alignment. An alignment (with the exception of N or possibly CN) implies dedication to a moral/ethical code or outlook, and if they're constantly switching, there's no dedication.
