| Token11-15-04, 03:02 AM | Has this ever happened to anyone? The party works together just fine, except for one player who uses every excuse to ruin NPC relations, cause in-party fighting (occasionally PvP) and act like a complete ASS? DM: You approch the city gates. It seems the guards are checking travel papers and searching carts looking for someone. (It's because the Chaotic Stupid character is wanted for disturbing the peace, vandalism, thievery, murder, public defecation, torture of innocents, groping chicks with big boobs, etc) CS: I charge the nearest city guard. (rolls some dice) DM: Congradulations, you killed yet another city guard. The archers in the towers shoot you, between the thousand and the 5% chance of actually hitting, you all die. Rest of party: ARRGG WHAT A DIPSCHITT!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: Why do some people feel the need to be complete dicks when in game? No seriously, I want to know. Please post your stories about Chaotic Stupid characters. This character constantly "takes it to far." Where one character might jokingly fart on a prisoner who isn't giving useful information, this one takes a dump on the prisoner's possessions. When one character would shamelessly hit on a hot-superbabe paladin (who is quite clueless - see Goku in the original Dragonball series), this one gropes her breasts in the middle of the Church of Heironious and risks being struck by divine lightning. Where one character has a few mugs of ale, this one picks up an entire barrel and chugs the entire thing, then smashes the table in half, picks up the bartender by his tail and twirls him around and drops him (the bartender was a kobold). Then when the rest of the party convinces an NPC to help them defeat the hextor cult that's taking over the city, he insults and threatens this helpful sorcerer and tries to pick a fight. |
| Mirtek11-15-04, 03:05 AM | Please post your stories about Chaotic Stupid characters. How about a thread about braindead (er, I mean lawful) chars? |
| Token11-15-04, 03:29 AM | How about a thread about braindead (er, I mean lawful) chars? For the record, I mean Chaotic Stupid, not Chaotic in general. As for "braindead lawful" characters, what ever do you mean? Do you mean characters that obey the law or characters that were dropped when they were little and now vote republician? |
| The Inquisition11-15-04, 04:27 AM | The Inquisition has had one such incident. The subject in question was a fighter of 8th level. During the King's feast, a ragged man who burst into the room claiming to be the real king entered. The king on the throne stood up and declared that rubbish, but they both seemed to be unable to conjure up unshakeable evidence that they were the real king. The CE fighter declared that since they both didn't have any distinctive bits of personal knowledge, they were both dopplegangers working for rival groups, and before anyone could stop him, stabbed both the kings. Then he was mad when he was lynched. |
| Yuffie11-15-04, 04:32 AM | Yeah, I had a few of these folks in my games in the past. I've weeded out most of them, although one remains. Fortunately the rest of the party seems to know to steer clear of him when he goes on suicidal adventures. I've made it clear to the party over and over that I don't expect them to fight monsters "just because they're there". If I have an army of gnolls and bugbears marching through a valley, that does not mean that they are there for the party to kill. He's gotten the party killed on several occasions in the past, and he's gotten himself killed at other times. "There are thirty goblin footsoldiers scouring the castle looking for what caused the noise you all made earlier, backed up by a dozen goblin shaman." So he bursts out of hiding and charges them screaming despite the fact that there were a few hundred other goblins nearby in the same castle. Or when he just randomly decided to try and jack / take over an airship despite having been previously told that it was out of fuel and was landing... surrounded by the city militia of the capital city of a kingdom. I think, to sum up, he's the kind of player who expects the DM to give him an obvious "out" no matter what he does. And I don't. I've no problem with killing off people who make stupid decisions. |
| Bluebrush11-15-04, 05:47 AM | Hm. Players like this don't seem to appreciate that the GM is there to have fun too and expects to have plot immunity because he's a player character. All one can do is take them aside and explain he's being annoying and, if they persist, allow them to be killed/thrown in the king's dungeon/punished. If you can, allow the rest of the party a way out. Sure, it might stretch suspension of disbelief if only one nutball is held accountable and his party members can get off by apologising/hiding but the alternative is stretching belief by letting the CS player get out unscathed. That or the game ends with the whole party in prison/dead/under a landslide. Note: Sometimes, CS players are just easily bored. If they have a minor role in the adventure but have done okay in other adventures where they were prominent, this effect may apply. Such players are better for smaller games. I once ran a non-serious game with just two of my mildly CS players, it was a lot of fun. |
| Joe Khol11-15-04, 07:57 AM | Why do some people feel the need to be complete dicks when in game? No seriously, I want to know. Judging from your description, because it is the kind of game you are playing. I don't see a massive difference between what you describe as acceptable and what you are complaining about. This player is only taking things a little further. If you are going to play a game with fart jokes and a 'hot-superbabe paladin' you are going to get players who push the boundaries. Unless you very explicitly state those boundaries at the start of the game, you are in a very weak position to complain. By all means tell this guy when you think he's overstepped the mark but don't be surprised when he is confused as to why what he did was wrong but what everyone else does isn't. |
| Thorak11-15-04, 08:46 AM | The Inquisition has had one such incident. See, if I were playing a CE fighter, I might react this exact same way. After all, it solves the problem as to who was the real king (since they're both dead, it doesn't matter), and he's got an heir, right? Or heck, he's got a kingdom's treasury, he can probably afford a Resurrection. And if one of them was a doppleganger or illusion-concealed imposter, killing them probably revealed which it was. The true king, after being Resurrected, should be thanking my character. Of course, that's entirely in-character. And I'd do all the above entirely expecting to get lynched. My only issue with this example is that the player got mad when this happened; what did he honestly expect when he killed the king? I mean, I assume one of the two was the real king, after all. That said; I understand the pain of Chaotic Stupid characters. We recently had an experience in our group (and if any of you read this, this isn't meant as a condemnation of anyone in the group; you guys are all great, this just devolved out of a bad situation into a silly conflict), where one character Charmed another, because he noticed the Charmee found a secret compartment and wanted the goodies. So when the Charm ran out, the Charmee jumped the Charmer, and started beating him bare-handed. So we pull the two of them apart, and the Charmer fires a magic missile at the Charmee. This was where it went downhill. It wouldn't have been so bad, but we were playing pre-generated characters from the DM (a failed experiment) and the Charmer's character was supposedly Lawful. And didn't see a difference between a non-lethal beatdown and theoretically lethal spellcasting. But I digress; everyone was frustrated with their characters, and the player in question was used to playing chaotic rogue types and really wanted to keep doing that. Where was I? Oh yeah. Chaotic stupid = bad. |
| green_yawgmoth11-15-04, 12:57 PM | Oh, you think that's bad? try having a party of ALL chaotic stupid, and being the one, ONE PC who: Actually plays his alignment correctly Doesn't try to cause a PvP fight before/during/after every combat Has a name for his character that isn't a stupid in-joke or the player's real name Knows what his spells, magic items, and racial traits are, and what they do without having to thumb through the PHB/DMG every round Thinks about what he should do before it's his action Doesn't metagame compulsively It's not very fun. Well, there is that small satisfaction of blasting the crap out of the drow sorceress who thinks she can take you on, and getting bonus XP for the appropriate CR encounter for yourself; but the above list kinda removes that fun. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Ogre4Hire11-15-04, 02:48 PM | Been there, done that. Will not play with that DM ever again (well, unless someone was paying me about $100/hour to play). We had an idiot like the one described in the first post in the session I played in last year. He is now banned for life from ever playing in one of our DM's games. (We've also got another guy who comes close, but he's not bad when he isn't trying to tell the DM why his harebrained pulled-out-of-my-:censored: idea should have worked.) |
| necromancer78711-15-04, 03:53 PM | Heres a story for you Token. I've got a player that no matter how ridiculously simple some task may seem he finds some way to tick everyone off. Example:An adventure was set in a desert city under seige by a small army of Efreet. We went to acquire information from the king on these efreet and why they had a vendetta, and he turned a simple friendly conversation into a total free-for-all w/ the palace gaurds! He insulted the king broke his possesions and when i questioned him.... he says "I'm Chaotic Neutral that's how I'm supposed to act." :OMG! Alignment is only general guidlines for actions the character normally ingages in. Why do you think the atonment spell exists people go against their alignment all the time. So you could say were all Chaotic. |
| Wildonion11-15-04, 07:20 PM | I am playing a kobold fighter (yes go ahead and laugh but I like Kobolds) and My friend Scott, who is incedently on this forum though I don't know his screen name, has a CE character. (I am CN) So Scott always takes control of the group and I decide my Kobold won't put up with that so I challenge him to a duel. After wiping the floor with him, a Kobold Player has never been so proud :bounce: , I spare his unconciose (spelling?) butt and haul his butt into town. Later he slaughters a tavern of innocent people and I, yet again, kick his @**. When he awakes he attacks me multiple times, each time the party aides me, until finally the fighter, who is normally a relaxed go with the flow guy, says "SCREW THIS!" and kills Scott while he is trying to grapple the Kobold. It was one of the best times we put Scott in his place but it ruined the game a lot. :weep: |

Did you even read the entire post? The game doesn't have fart jokes, occasionally (and I mean VERY occasionally) one of the players will do something in character that when pulled out of context and mis-interpreted can be viewed as a fart joke, as you just did. No one litteraly farted on a prisoner, that was an example of the minor act vs the CS stupid act. Yes, the CS DID take a cr*p on a prisoner's possessions. As for the "hot-superbabe paladin," that's just a 3 word description of the actual character, who has a discinct personality and description, thrown in there to provide variety and avoid the problem of everyone acting the same. A side note, this CS player has had more PC fatalties than ANY other player in the game, even in non-meat grinder games where he was the ONLY pc fatality, and he dies several times due to his own CS-ness. We've tried making him play a LG character, and he acts the same. We've tried making him play a high CHA sorcerer and he acts the same (well he lobs a fireball instead of charging but you get the picture). |
| Token11-15-04, 09:24 PM | I am playing a kobold fighter (yes go ahead and laugh but I like Kobolds) That's awesome, my next character is going to be a Kobold Druid. |
| Token11-15-04, 09:26 PM | ...when i questioned him.... he says "I'm Chaotic Neutral that's how I'm supposed to act." :OMG! If he plays that, you should try to make him play a LG character and use his argument against him. Or maybe his first game had a CS player in it, and he thinks CN = CS. You should explain the difference between "following your heart" and being stupid. |
| Wildonion11-15-04, 10:25 PM | That's awesome, my next character is going to be a Kobold Druid. HAIL TO THE KOBOLD! :dragon: |

This brings up the question of just why he is still allowed to play in the group. |
| Temmogen11-17-04, 03:16 PM | OK, first a little background... We are a large group, 12+ members on good nights. I was one of 2 arcane casters, the other one is whom I am speaking of. We are presently running through a version of the old "Q1" module. The other wizard, a whisper gnome illusionist, permantently shapechanged into a fairy or pixie, or something. travelling with another gnome named "Barhead" ( should be "Bonehead" if you ask me.) that is his cohort acting as his familliar. the rest of the party doesnt know he is the fairy, he wants us think he's the gnormal gnome. So we get a small respite in an deep gnome city, a chance to relax, make some much needed magic items, reequip, etc. Our friend, the gnome, decides he is going to show the deep gnomes what a trickster he can be, by playing pranks on the party....Mistake number one. he didnt bother to inform said party, about the pranks.....mistake number two. Our spokesman (12th lvl halfling druid) is trying to speak with the town's priests'. Our friend then creates an illusion of dancing skeletons behind the druid. Three of the six priests fail thier saves, and after getting talked down by thier fellows, tell the druid to "Leave us alone, you who consort with necromancers". this prevenmts us from warning the deep gnomes about the drow armies, being led by at least 2 black dragons, coming to get us in thier peacful little town....mistake number three. The druid put a 10k gp bounty out on the gnome. The player then decides he is not coming back to plkay anymore, citing anymosity in the party. We were happy to see him leave. And Mike, if you read this.....That was just plain stupid. There is my Chaotic Stupid story... Have a nice day!!!!! :rimshot: |

Have a nice day!!!!! :rimshot: Part one: Sure the "prank" was none too groovy, but the DM was playing the Deep Gnomes as being beyond stupid. He was playing them as brain dead. Unless the spokes-shorty never even tried to say squat because he was miffed at the joke himself, and even then really, since he was putting his own ego above the safety of an entire community, the Deep Gnomes here needed to get this "Darwin Award". "Wait, I have something really vital to tell you!" "No, go away! You've offended our sensibilities with the type of shenanigans that gnomes are notorious for. Now, we'll go off somewhere and sulk while this place gets burned down around our ears, and it's all your fault.". Yep, Darwinism at work. These idiots deserved to die. Isshia |
| The_EvilDungeon_Master11-17-04, 07:48 PM | Oh god, I just hate people who think 'chaotic' means 'random' in D&D. It's the opposite of Law dammit! DM: "After your fight with the [insert monster here] you continue on the road, you think you can see an inn in the distance an-" PC: "I set it on fire." DM: "Er, why?" PC: "I'm chaotic, that means I'm random." While I agree that setting a tavern on FIRE is quite certainly unlawful, the reasons for doing it were... not... justified. |
| Naeron11-18-04, 11:50 AM | Has this ever happened to anyone? Rest of party: ARRGG WHAT A ******* :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: . I would have to say that this is somewhat braindead behaviour on the part of the DM. Why punish the other players for something they are not involved in unless in-game the authorities mandate guilt by association. A better response would be: CS: I charge the nearest city guard. (rolls some dice) DM: Congratulations, you killed yet another city guard. This time the other guards seem to be better prepared for this, now common, occurrence and shout for help. A volley of arrows fly towards you while several squads of armoured warriors pour out of the towers. CS: Back me up guys Party: backs off and watches DM: ... and you are cut down and die. But in general the best way to deal with CS characters is to appluthe logical consequences of their actions. They commit murders in town - they eventually get tracked down and killed. They attack a powerful monster - it squishes them. The player either learns the lesson that you won't pull punches if they do stupid things that should lead them into harm or they end up being asked to leave. |
| Ogre4Hire11-18-04, 05:48 PM | At least, you can hope that they'll learn from their mistakes. But barring that, they'll probably leave after they realize their behavior isn't being tolerated. |
| Xavier_of_Cormyr11-18-04, 11:06 PM | Sure all PC's have alignments, but so do the players themselves. Chaotic Stupid is just one of them. You also have: -Lawful Everywhere: the gamer who's PC was the first one in the room if there is gold, but the PC that claims "I never went into the room" once a trap is sprung. -Chaotic Nowhere: the gamer who doesn't show up for the session & the DM has to figure out what to do with their PC. -Lawful Lawyer: the gamer who lives only to check every rule in the books, regarding every instance of gameplay. :teach: -Neutral Annoying: the gamer who has serious A.D.D. and simply can't sit still, stop eating the Doritos, and make's phone calls during combat. :banghead: -Chaotic Roller: the gamer who amazingly never fails a save or misses a attack roll unless their die roll is carefully watched. :shifty: -Neutral Borrower: the gamer who always seems to forget their PHB, dice, character, etc. Ah, there are so many I can't even list them all. I'm sure you guys have more of your own too..... |
| Objulen11-19-04, 04:05 AM | I particuarly hate the players whose characters beg the question, "How do you manage to survive being this stupid?" I was onced playing with an idiot who tried to turn every encounter into a battle, held in check only the collective threats of the party, and was a general *ss despite the DM applying xp loss and the "fish" method. So everyone ganged up on him and gave him two options: coup de gra or geas. He chose the latter, but stopped showing up after two sessions. As expected, no one shed a tear. |
| Jefuri no Oni11-22-04, 02:43 PM | My group once had a Chaotic Stupid Sorcerer in our party. His alignment was chaotic neutral (of course) and it was perfect that he was a steriotypical fireball machine gun sorcerer because this player had no concept of stealth, subtlty, or tact what so ever. Every opportunity for non combat encounters he would turn into a fight by saying something studpid to screw up relations with that particular NPC (the funny thing is he wasn't even TRYING to pick a fight). Or he would say something rude to a helpful NPC who would than turn around and refuse to help him because of it (luckily they would often still help the rest of the party). Some times he would acomplish the same thing by just tossing a fire ball before the NPC's even had a chance to show weather they were hostile or not. The only reason his character survived as long as he did is that he had the rest of us to reign him in and prevent him from doing REALLY REALLY stupid things. In hind sight I don't know why we bailed him out as many times as we did. |
| Prachett11-22-04, 03:22 PM | My quick story.... we have a CS human Palladin in our group. He is mildly to moderately xenophobic. We used to get really ****** at him when he randomly started fights, but the current group consists of 3 sneaky types of questionable alignment, a LG apathetic cleric, and him. Having given up on the Pally long ago, we now egg him on, which curiously has a calming effect. Example: Group is moving through Cormyr (FR), meet some high ranking elves, which try to warn him about impending doom. Pally gets mad and says "Why are we always taking orders from these freaking elves? Who do they think they are?" The three sneaky types then start commenting like: "I don't know, but he certainly seems arrogant" "Yeah, he's kinda staring at you." "I think he thinks he's better than you." "Damn elves." So forth... for some reason the Pally looks at us and goes, "Well, I don't think we can just go around slaughtering people." ??? That's why I love this game. |
| Raist27m11-22-04, 03:36 PM | Some chaotic stupids can be talked to....others are just hopeless. If the guy just doesn't care about ruining everyone else's fun, then kick him out of the game. He's not much of a friend to begin with if he doesn't give a rat's arse about the rest of the group. |
| Ramius_Mordale11-22-04, 05:53 PM | Once had a guy play a CN fighter with a spiked chain. Okay first off I always had reservations of letting this guy into our group, but my friend was like, "he promises to be good". Well this guy wanted to play evil characters, not that I'm against that, but our GM at the time and most of us like to play good characters or neutral ones with good tendencies. Well he promised he wasn't going to screw off and do stupid stuff. First session went off fine and so did the second. Well I was playing a wizard with the spellfire feat, so I felt a bit cheap with the DM handing me wands and having so much power so I decided to add a negative when I absorbed my maximum amount of energy I could store to shoot two blasts right after the other with this huge orc army (our DM at the time was having trouble gauging CRs and we are like below 5th level here). Well I added that he had a percent chance of going mad (or mentally out of whack) because of the stress to just add in game flavor. Well that was probably my last mistake I'll ever do for trying to balance the equation in game. Well our DM left us (not an unusual occurance; he constantly blows us off and doesn't have a problem with it so he was voted out of the group) so the guy that had invited in the guy play our CN fighter guy took up DMing. Well I was playing my character with war shock and he would over react a little too much to violence and demands. Well our great and noteworthy fighter decides he is going to trip up our halfling rogue in the party with his spiked chain in a caravan we stopped at for supplies and local gossip for adventure. Well he crit fails and the chain nearly hits a guard in the caravan. Needless to say, they weren't happy about it. Now just for the record his and my character had survived great pearls of danger and from what I thought in-game our two characters were friends. Well I assumed too much, for when the guards approached my character while he was just buying some vials, they rudely said he had to go for doing nothing but being associated with the other two. Well my character felt threatened and so I rolled the 10% chance in front of everyone whether my war shock would kick in. Well it was 1% so it kicked in. My character goes to cast web when one of the guards grabs my characters arm. Then they pull clubs out and start beating me. Okay I can't blame the DM for that I was casting a spell and they didn't know what I was casting. Well eventually everything got resolved another the halfling calmed my guy down but I still got hit with an arrow that had paralitic poison on it. And no I didn't kill anyone, just burnt down a wagon as a warning for the guards to stop attacking, but unfontunately, uncannyingly, someone got slightly burnt inside that I healed later. Later on though this guy starts passing notes to the GM that he is going to slit my throat. Now first off the DM was really starting to get annoyed with this guy causing stuff. Well this guy who just started playing D&D starts raging to me that I'm not playing in character and just trying to show off. Well making a long story short I ended up in character running off into the Moor Lands to fight this troll we were after. The party luckily followed me and saved my chars @ss, even though at the time I was just tired of having to deal with playing with this guy and was just going to kill off my char. Well then I end up DMing unexpectantly because our new DM couldn't show because of work. I kept my character in the campaign, big mistake and reason why I'm never going to PC and DM at the same time ever again. I used my character as a plot hook and had him bit by a werewolf. Well the werewolf was meant to infect this guys character at first and then get him cured, but of course never ever goes to the DM plan. Anyways we were rushing our way to town and night sets in and it just so happens a full moon is out tonight but its cloudy but slowly clearing up. They tied up my character and barely got him into the Selune church to have him cured. Well alright first off this CN fighter's concept was to fight with a spiked chain and he wielded a crowbar as his back up weapon (yes that's right a back up weapon). I'm the type of DM that allows creativity to happen, well used to now I have boundaries after this, and he says he wants to become a werewolf. Okay what lead to this is we played Whitewolf's vampire masqurade a few days before our D&D session. Honestly I don't like whitewolf games that much so which is why I only own the main book for it and that's it and I don't think it has been opened in oh, six or so months. But I ramble, in any case, he wants to be a white werewolf lycanthrope of Selune and not be a justicar spiked chain wielding tyr worshiper. That's right he was going to switch his alignment slowly to LN but now he wanted to be a lycanthrope and me being stupid allowed it. Well needless to say the campaign fell threw and ended after one more session. Was I being stupid yes, but I am only being guilty of being stupid because this guy accuses me to this day of being uptight and not a good roleplayer. Well since I have heard about his supposed super campaign he ran, everyone told me he was the worst DM they had ever played with. (That's right I was excluded for a time for different reasons.) He got even worse I was told and everyone dispised him showing up every session because he would do nothing but argue with the DM and fellow players and always be conflictational towards the PCs and NPCs. Well apparantly I'm a good rper because when I came back, everyone told me they were sorry they didn't listen to me about him in a round about way. Hey I admit I'm far from being super at the game but I don't boast about how good I am at it, since I only have played it for like 4 or 5 years. My advice is for those new players out there, don't go around thinking you know everything about the game and don't tell your DM that he is wrong, because most likely if you are just starting out in the game you're wrong. Hey I don't mind taking criticism from players about my DMing and my calls; I encourage it actually. But when you aren't respectful about it I usually tune out whatever the person has to say. Well needless to say this guy isn't in our group and won't be ever again. And from what I have heard no one ever plays D&D or whitewolf with this guy either. Hmm... now that is just pure justice if you ask me. Sorry for the length  , but it was a long story to begin with. Later all. :tiphat: |
| Jefuri no Oni11-24-04, 03:21 AM | I just remembered another Chaotic Stupid story. I once gamed with a guy who's ingenious character concept was Fighter from 8 bit theatre. He would walk around saying "I like Swards" to every NPC we met and he was obcessed with the Mercurial Great Sward. Some more of his brilliant lines were "I just want to Kill things.", "will there be things to kill there?", "I like Swards." If that game had gone on much longer he probably would have gone from obcessing over the Mercurial Great Sward to obcessing over Sward Chucks. |
