| Beholm01-15-05, 05:01 PM | My 2 sons have decided that they want good ole dad to teach them how to play D&D... After trying to figure out how to explain such abstract concepts as Intellegence vs Wisdom and Strength vs Constitution, I came up with the following survey to help them roll up their character. They are to pretend that they are a 16 year old human when they answer. And they are to remember that there are no RIGHT or WRONG answers. Each question compares 2 stats against each other to decide which is more important. Each answer will add +1 to a stat that starts at base 10. Here is the survey: Please answer all questions without thinking about which answer is best. There is no best no answer. 1. As you begin your journey, you pass a farm. A young boy runs from the barn shouting for help! When you finally calm him down, he explains that his father is trapped in the hayloft. As you enter the barn, you notice a stack of crates and a rope. What do you do? A) stack the crates so you can climb them up to the loft or B) try to toss the rope up and lasso a rail so you can climb up. 2. During the journey you are crossing a bridge over a fast-moving river when the bridge collapses. The current is very strong and the water is cold. Do you A) swim for shore across the current or B) swim with the current hoping to reach a calmer spot before the cold takes it’s toll. 3. The first night on the road you come up to a camp full of young men traveling the same direction as you. As a way to pass the time, a boxing tournament is organized. After a few fights, one man seems to be the favorite, beating his opponents with little trouble. This last fight though, he has been beaten up pretty badly. There is time for one more fight before tomorrow. Do you A) step up to challenge him while he is tired from the other fights or B) watch this next fight so you can learn how to beat him tomorrow. 4. In your fight with the champ, you notice that he keeps dropping his guard when he swings hard. The problem is that this opening is on your weak side. Do you A) put everything into the next swing when he drops his guard or B) keep playing it safe, looking for a better opening. 5. You did it! You actually beat the champ! Bun in your fight with him you hurt your hand. The next young man steps up to fight. Do you A) hide your pain and go in swinging or B) Try to limp so he thinks that your foot or leg are injured. 6. The next day another boy runs up to you as you are crossing a bridge. He tells you that the boy you beat has gotten some friends together and plans on jumping you. They are less than a minute behind the messenger. Do you A) run toward the foret and try to hide or B) jump into the river and hold your breath until they pass. 7. The boys run past, but just as you think that you are safe one of them notices you. The safest course of action is to get back to camp ahead of them. Do you A) run as fast as you can. Try to be faster than them or B) Try to loose them in the woods and find your way back to camp the long way. 8. As you run back to camp, you approach a ravine. There is a rope hanging out of a tree over the ravine. Do you A) run up and swing across the ravine on the rope or B) climb down the rope into the ravine and look for a way up the other side. 9. Back at camp you finally feel safer. Noone will try to hurt you with all the others around. But in the night you hear someone approach your tent. Realizing that it is the bully, do you A) sneak out the back of the tent or B) start talking as if someone were in the tent with you? 10. In the morning you are told that today will be a physical test day. All the men are lined up and told to do pushups until the time is up. A friend boast that he can do his pushups faster than you. Do you A) race him to see who is in better shape or B) do yours slow and steady. Try to last the whole time. 11. Given free time, you are given a choice. Do you A) read a book on tactics in battle, or B) run with the other men. 12. During a later test, you find yourself in a large group of men. No one has watched as you did your pushups. You have to do 40 pushups. Do you A) do them no matter how hard or B) try to convince the leader that you did 40. 13. During your training you are given the option of classes. Do you A) try to learn how to construct a bridge from 2 ropes or B) learn how to read the ground for signs of animals. 14. Do you A) learn the recipe for a healing salve or B) learn how to play lute. 15. You break camp. As you take some things to the river to wash, you find yourself in between a mother bear and her cub. She looks frustrated, but not menacing. Do you A) move slowly into the river, allowing the bear to pass or B) lead the baby toward it’s mother with scraps of food 1. STR / DEX 2. STR / CON 3. STR / INT 4. STR / WIS 5. STR / CON 6. DEX / CON 7. DEX / INT 8. DEX / WIS 9. DEX / CHR 10. CON / WIS 11. CON / INT 12. CON / CHR 13.INT / WIS 14. INT / CHR 15. WIS / CHR Give it a whirl and see what you think... |
