| Sarella Starshine05-29-05, 02:53 AM | pcgen.sourceforge.net there is another one called redblade (look it up in google) that people claim is as good as if not better than PCgen. though, though code monkey (www.codemonkeypublishing.com) you can buy (for less than 10$ us) data sets of WtoC D&D books for PCgen. also PCgen is cross platform (its a java-based program, so you do need to download java if you do not have it) so it is compatible with those insane people who insist that linux or mac is better than windows and refuse to conform with the rest of us (JUST KIDDING! i am a die-hard mac fan, but for reasons best left unstated, i am forced into using my windows machine). |
| fatal error05-29-05, 03:33 AM | I use redblade, I didn't like PCgen much. Redblade is very easily customizable, you can add all the classes, spells, races, etc. Just takes some time. But, I assume PCgen doesn't have anything non-SRD for D&D either, right? |
| Sarella Starshine05-29-05, 04:36 AM | PCgen, without buying any of the data sets from code monkey, has the SRD by default, but like i stated, if you go to code monkey, they have data sets for PCgen of published books by malhavoc, bastion press, and WtoC for sale usually for less than 10.00 a data set (WtoC stuff runs about 5-6$ a data set). code monkey is also the same people doing e-tools for WtoC. redblade and PCgen are both great free character generator programs. i personally prefer PCgen over redblade, and bought several WtoC data sets from code monkey for PCgen. also, i am not 100% sure redblade can run on a non-windows OS, but i do know that PCgen does, so if you are running a non-windows OS, PCgen would be the safest bet :) *all prices are in US dollars |

PCGen is actually much more powerful, and there's a GMGen module as well, allowing GMs to run an adventure using it. It might be more work getting your own datasets to work, but the efforts well worth it when you run a battle on them. Version 5.8 of PCGen has just been released. AFAIK, the codemonkey datasets are actually based on version 5.6.x and quite incompatible with any newer versions. |
