Everyone whose played through a few campaigns probably has one or more. Post them here.

My most recent PC death was my Male Half-Elf Paladin/Bladesinger/Bladedancer/Fighter named "Fancy Feet" Hogan. He was brave to the point of being foolish, and that is why he was slain by Szass Tam's Finger of Death.

When the Search function is re-instated, I'll post a link to the thread that has a couple hundred of these.

I know which thread you are referring too, I created this one for everyone to post into, not just DMs.

The very first character I ever lost was in 1E, he was a human 4th level fighter named Colosses. He died after being stepped on by a giant.

My most recent PC to die was Bronn Rodikson, a 3rd level human paladin. He and most of his party were slain when attacked by a harpy queen (6th level harpy fighter) wielding an ice enchanted bow.

My last dead character was Sir Axël de Winter. It was a human Psion (telepath) who dared to challenge a mindflayer on a psionic combat. He failed and got his brain sucked. I think it was at level 14th, not sure. I don't even remember which PrC I had got (was a long time ago).

My only character to die was named Grimkiller. I tried to attack a shop keeper and he pulled out a wand of some kind of frost spell i cant remember what. But the way i died is i brought my ax down on him and he blocked with the wand breaking it and realeasing 24 charges of the spell. I was later reserected after being thawed out.

Hadion Vakmir Alcronis 7th Monk, 13th Wizard, 10th Mage of the Hand (homebrew Prc.) The Lich queen and a few hundred of her soldiers attacked the reclaimed city of Tilverton. The Lich Queen and her force were repelled by the towns' defenders and some travellers, but not before Hadion was Soul Trapped by the Lich Queen.

Oskar Mondrel, Dwarven 6th level Fighter: He died when he attempted to grapple a tiny snake CR 1 construct with a CR 6 1d6 Con/1d6 Con poison. Got hit twice and died to the DC 14 poison (he had a +10 Fortitude save vs. poison: +5 base fighter bonus, +2 dwarven racial bonus, +3 Constitution modifier).

Since I haven't played a D&D game long enough to get a character killed, I'll list my Star Wars casualties:

1 - Unnamed Jedi Guardian - Attacked two PC's several levels higher.
2 - JP Polnareff, Tech Specialist - Shot to death when he stopped to fight rather than fly off.
3 - JP Polnareff, reincarnated 4,000 years later - Survived a frat house falling on him, but campaign ended at the end of the session.
4 - Aboroth, aspiring Sith Lord - Killed by Darth Maul (serial number filed off, Jedi Weapon Master levels). Lived as a Sith spirit, campaign ended.
5 - Dar El'Beida, Scoundrel - Devoured by skekfish. Cloned.
6 - Dar El'Beida, cloned Scoundrel - Killed by a headhunter the very next week. Possessed by powerful dark side spirit.
7 - Dar El'Beida, possessed Scoundrel - Decapitated in one hit with a lightsabre... the very next week.

I'm hoping my current character, Commander X, will last longer. Just in case, I'm working on a backup: "Angel Eyes, cyborg Marauder."

It's been a terribly long time since I've played D&D as a player and my characters have the tendency to survive, so all what I can offer now is my late SW character.

Grand Admiral Aeros Haakin (noble 3/soldier 2/officer 7/Imperial moff 5) - killed in a nuclear explosion above Bastion due to a modified Super Star Destroyer Titan's A.I. gone mad and the machinations of a Dark Jedi while trying to save the Empire from being secretly forced to join the New Republic and to prevent the Titan Fleet from bombarding Bastion.

Yeah, I don't like DMs talking about characters they've killed; PCs do it all on their own, and it's not the DM's job to kill PCs. It feels so very much like bragging, as in, "hehehe, look what I did to this stewpid character."

Anyway, Salonous Tiphe, a contrary fella all o' his life, gone to a bow fight, but brung a knife (taken out by five guys with bows while he covered retreat for some friends).

Mack, who felt the need to lick a prismatic wall.

Sheeta, whose friends made some lizardfolk very angry and didn't tell her. Then the party walked through their territory. Hopefully they choked on her nasty, stringy, elven carcass.

Wiker McKormick - Cleric lvl 23 - Died as an NPC, stricken with cancer this character died at the wedding of on of the PC's.

Reilansa McKormick - Fighter 4/Rouge 5/Assasin 6/ Wizard 5 - Died as an NPC. This character was one of the generals in an evil knights army bent on resurecting a dead god. She is the direct desendent of Wiker, and was slain by her lover, one of the heroes that helped in stopping the BBEG plans.

Athena McKormick - Cleric 8 - Daughter of Reilansa, this on was actually a PC, who died after being kidnapped by a group of Elementals, and sent off to the plane of Fire. The DM just happened to randomly roll for her to be the one captured, and I failed every stikning check.

As you can see, I tend to run with the same family line, so the character I have now (Del McKormick - Ranger 3) is the newest in the line. Problem is that he is the last in the line, for his father and mother only had one child. So if he dies off, then I have to end a family line I have been using since 1991.

Lucias Clayburn? That is odd. My first name is Luke and my middle name is Cleburne. What a coincedence.

Odd coincidence indeed. Lucias was a name I never used for a character and Clayburn just had a ring to it.

Mendle, Human, 8th level wiz/ 2nd level Acolyte of the Skin. Betrayed by his apprentice (another pc) and murdered in cold blood. Very cold blood actually, 2 ice storms in row. Brrrr.....

Brennen, Dwarf, 3rd level rogue/ 2nd level fighter. Bored with the current campaign Brennen and his companions decided to walk a few miles outside of town and start banging pots and pans together in order to get some action going. Never had he seen such a large group of Gnolls. . . nor such a bad gaming session.

Thull, Dwarf, Wiz2/ Rune caster 3. Cast blink, stepped through wall, saw big monster, lost init, monster passed it's 50% miss chance nailing poor Thull a good one. Lights out.

Othor, Human, Ranger 5/Fighter 2. Failed a will save against a symbol of insanity, unfortunately everyone else in the party did too. TPK

Duvados, Human, Wiz 6. Eaten by a giant moth.
Faragon

09-14-04, 09:26 AM
Here lies Faragon Fëamith, Ayonella of Corellon. While I always though that it'd be his arrogance that'd kill him, it was actually a dragon with a lake. (grappled then dropped into a lake and failing his swimchecks 10 ft from the shore) And poison spiders (Leveldrains+con damage hurt) And another Dragon (grappled and breath weaponed at point blanc range) And last of all, going without much more than clothing up against three ogres with huge greatclubs. Faragon had Inflict Spells, as having no Divine Focus sucks when you're a cleric. Alas, it did him no good, what with having AC 13 in clothing.

Now he spends eternity alongside a very dissapointed Corellon Larethian.

R.I.P Faragon.

I am ususally the DM, so I don't have a lot of PCs.

But the ones I have had have died :(

Kirinagulanathos, a small black dragon (well, bronze with black scales) died from a backhand 20 from a troll. Dammit.

Hakim - Rog/Wiz/Ftr  - toasted by dragon statues while fleeing a crumbling Strahd castle. (We wasted that vampire though).

Seth - Bar - Killed by a zombie that could tell he was still alive (Seth was in the negatives at the zombies feet). Mean DM.

My mage attacked the cohort of an evil half-red dragon blackguard. I got 20 damage on my Magic Missle. The blackguard turned and hit me once doing 46 damage, which brought me down to 11. I htought i did this behind his back but appearantly he said you could see all around i thouhgt not but w/e. then his cohort threw two knives at me and i died.
this is the second character of mine to die
i had a crazed hafling who had multiple personalities and one of them was a red wizard of thay that kept throwing insults at the party paladin. at one point the halfing insulted his pride or courage or something like that and he drew his great sword or something and coup de graced me when i switched personalites the round earlier into a unintelligent barbarian youth who like to draw pictures in the dirt. i htought that attacking an unarmed defenseless neutral character was evil or atleast not good but w/e.

Hmmm....my last to die was one of my all time favs., her name was Diana Devir. She was a 16th level NE cleric, race: Irda. She was killed by one of the other characters in the group (a 18th lv witch).

That is the only one worth mentioning, when my current character dies (Cal'esti Traethyl, half-dragon/half elf, NG cleric lv 2), I will let you know how it happens.

Telkandore: My first PC ever. Created in 1999. After many adventures and close calls, Telkandore was murdered by a fellow party member when a rivalry began between me and another player.

Kanetrolde: A human wizard and my second character. Killed by an evil Lich in the ruins of an old mage academy. Previously killed himself and most of his party just to kill his rival. Four PCs teleported out when we began fighting each other. They all revived us after the fight. BTW, I hold the only recorded kill on my rivals main PC, but he denies it.

Justin Haller: Died of old age after a life of adventuring (I.E. campaign ended.)

John Doe: A monk, a second casualty of the rivalry. Killed by the same rival after I attacked his players girlfriend (She threw a damn knife at me!)

John Doe II: Monkey-man OA shaman. Drowned when ship when sunk by a dragon turtle. (Combat never resolved. OA Campaign ended.)

John Doe III: Disolved into nothingness when the new DM (The old DM went to college, the band basically died there) got arrested for shoplifting.

Talios "The Foul" Stoneleaf Grey-Elf. Wizard, Loremaster, Alienist, Cleric of Palm TCL=32nd. Was slain by an Ogre-Mage named Malice who was a Wizard, Mage of the Hand, Loremaster, the battled over who would have ownership of the Artifact called the Altar of Tiamat. Malice was slain by his "ally" Paltien Longclaw Dragonkin Sorcerer right after the battle when Malice was at his weakest.

Also among the dead. Vorsten the Cruel, male Drow, Fighter 20th. He was slain by Cassitus while fighting in the dungeons of the now ruined Zhentil Keep.

09-29-04, 09:23 AM
Kirien Cravensson - Grey Elf Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight, TCL: 21, didn't die but ascended to quasi-deityhood after destroying the lich-god Yar T'ang (sort of a bargain-basement Vecna, nowhere near as powerful). Campaign he was in ended, and needless to say no other DM will ever let me play him, so he might as well be dead. Occasionally I have him show up in the background of D&D games that I run, but he rarely actually *does* anything because I want it to be about the players' characters and not about him.

I haven't played much, manily been a DM, and thus I've only managed to kill one of my characters.

Here lies Tarn Runecaster, 2nd level Runemaster, killed and eaten by oversized ostriches.
Full story:
The party was in a city and to pass time, we decided to take on a contract to kill some critters that had pestered the surrounding countryside. Only four out of six party memebers joined the hunt. We were four vs six CR 2 Tallstriders (the earlier mentioned oversized ostriches). 3 rounds after we found them we were all dead.
Demonfey

10-03-04, 09:04 PM
He had no actual name, and went under numerous aliases. His most common one was Crowley Maelhaevec. He was a CE fey'ri wizard6/archmage5/elemental savant11/spell sword1/fighter1. He had a mageduel to the death with a LG sorceror/shugenja/mystic theurge who had been in a party with him and he lost. Even in death, he had the last laugh, having a favor from Asmodeus called in to have all of the theurge's followers killed, imprisoned in gems, and a trap the soul trap set for the theurge in one of the corpses.
He was a pyro to the end :mage:

Everyone whose played through a few campaigns probably has one or more. Post them here.

I've probably lost 50 characters over the last twenty four years. The initial loss was a first level half-elven thief (1st edition) who picked a pocket and was caught ... slain on the spot.

My second loss was my first character ever, named Awbruta, a CG fighter, who lived until level 7. Unfortunately, TSR had created an awful magical item called Helm of Alignment Change. With me being young and unable to adjust Awbruta's personality from that of a carefree but well-meaning person to that of a dominating, mean-spirited person was too hard. I found a way to throw himself away foolishly in a battle

Most recent, a lower end BBEG. A Barbarian3-Bugbear named Gath-ulf who's band was responsible for most of the raiding and was blamed for that and about everything else in the region the PC's started in. Gath-ulf and the parties main tank, my wife's character an almost Conan-esque human (Torian) Barbarian4 named Haclan a' Thodesous had a savage, unarmed rage fest that ended with Gath finally felled and Haclan at 1 hit point. Even though there are still almost half of the original raiders are still at large, no one has been able to forge them into a group any longer and they're being slowly exterminated by the locals.

Never over look the "monsterous humanoid" races as sources of memorable opponents, especially at lower levels They're grand.

My latest character, a Warforged named Vorelir, was the last in a series of ten experimental units (the Infused) that were created with powerful outsiders bound within them. Vor was infused with a Fire Elemental, which gave him the Frenzy ability of his class. This particular Elemental, already a rather malevolent specimen, was driven mad by the trauma of binding--when Vorelir enters a Frenzy, it takes control of his body, boosting his strength and forcing him to attack anything that moves.
Despite this, Vor was really not a bad fellow--his only real goal was to settle down somewhere quiet, where he wouldn't endanger anybody with his Frenzy. But he was forced into the role of hero when his 'brother,' a demon-bound unit called Taraga, began hunting down and killing his fellow Infused, assimilating their components into himself and becoming even stronger.
Vor eventually caught up with Taraga, and killed him after a pitched battle that nearly cost him his own life. After he repaired himself, Vorelir realized that not only had he learned to control his Frenzy, but he was now considered a hero by the city of Sharn--and that by becoming an adventurer, he might gain acceptance elsewhere.
But as he gained level after level, Vor's Frenzy grew more and more terrible to behold--and each time, his control became more tenuous. After a time it dawned on him that, should he lose control over his power, he would become a menace to all of Eberron.
He grew more and more reckless, seeking out the most powerful beings in the world and slaying them. Each time, he nearly lost his life--and each time, he grew more powerful. His only hope of saving the world from himself only made him even more of a threat.
Finally, when Vor was at 28th level, the Lord of Blades dealt him a mortal wound--even as Vorelir ran him through.
These were his dying words:

"Are you watching, Taraga? Are you looking down at me from wherever our kind go? I hope you are, brother... I hope you've been watching me since the moment I set foot on the road to my destruction.
"I hope you've learned something from my life... something about who you are... who you were... who you could have been.
"I feel cool, brother--I feel cool for the first time in my life. The fire I feared would consume all I loved... has gone out at last. I know I am dying, and I fear what awaits me... and yet, I am glad as well... for the world is safe from the monster I might have become.
"Perhaps I will see you again... for after all I have done, what god would send me anywhere else? Wherever I go, I hope it is cool...
"It is finished--I feel it... so cold..."

Rest in peace, big guy... :weep:

Jaereth, 14th level wizard, my very first character, was killed off last spring when my group got sent to a demiplane and was attacked by a balor. He missed his saving throw, and died horribly from some spell-like ability.

I haven't been playing long enough for more deaths than that (only 2ish years), though with my quality of playing, it's bound to happen soon. My suicidal wizard in another campaign nearly died when he was surrounded by orcs and out of fireballs-he just barely escaped by summoning a hippogriff and jumping out of the tower he was in. Now, he's being chased by orcs, and has only a magic missile or two left, and his city is being invaded by orcish armies. It doesn't look too promising.

My first and only character death so far:

Ravi Olie, level 5 Hexblade (4)/Talon of Tiamat (1); He, and his four other level 5 group mates got attacked by an evil wizard. The wizard killed off two party members in one spell, hit us with a lightning bolt and a fireball before the third died. The other and Ravi continued to fight, taking him to 5hp before the other was slain and Ravi was Dominated and killed. We later found out that the wizard was level 15. We awoke as intelligent undead in his tower.

Herodyn of Torm

Born to a humble Tormite, who had long ago immgrated from the city-state of Teziir to the township of Hluthvar in the Sunset Vale, Herodyn grew up questioning his father's faith in the face of the strong Helmite beliefs in Hluthvar. By the time he had matured however, he chose Torm's selfless concern for the common good, over Helm's amoral concern for the law.

Thus, did he leave both the preliminary service of Helm and Helmite dominated Hluthvar; not to mention a few friends (and a lover) who deeply begrudged his decision. Nevertheless, from that point on, Herodyn was blessed by Torm with flawless health, divine grace, and healing touch.

Venturing southward to the city-state of Iriaebor, Herodyn made new friends and eventually en listed with most of them in the Shields of Iriaiebor, as the city-states army is called.

As orcii had recently begun to pour out of the southern reaches of the Sunset Mountains to harry Iriaebor, neighbouring Berdusk, and the small town of Asbravn, Herodyn saw much action and quickly earned the rank of Shieldknight (Corpreal/Sgt., as oppsed to a Shieldthane = Sgt./Lt/Capt. and a Shieldmaster = general). He was also stationed at Fort Ironside when a great orc horde attacked the forces (and ore-mine) there. A mere 30 Shields held off well over a 150 orcii in their battered and ruined stockade until relief at last arrived to clean up the dead. Thus did the survivors earn the nickname "Orc-Doomers". And they became the nucleus for a new company of Shields know as Orc-Doom.

During these Orc Wars it was eventually learend that the orcii were pouring out of the Sunset Moutians and Far Hills becasue a terrible evil was driving them out. Thus, did the combined alliance of Iriaibor and Berdusk put together a powerful company of 100 experienced warriors, mages, and priests, Herodyn amongst them. Their job was to penetrate into the southern Far Hills (which ajoin the Sunset Mtns), locate this "terrible evil", and if possible eliminate it ... thus bringing an end to the constant orc migrations.

The terrible evil however found them first. And over the course of three nights it managed to whittle the elite force down to almost nothing and throw it into complete disray. During that time Herodyn became seperated from all of the others and for a time wandered, lost, through the Far Hills. Before he would see another sun rise, the Render (as the terrible beast is known) tracked him down, trapped him in a cul de sac, and, errr, rended him.

His identity was thence taken over by an erinyes, who had long ago fallen from Tiamat's grace, but was now being given a chance to redeem herself by tracking down some old traitors and killing them.

Let's see, most recently a 9th fighter name Dutch Masterson(n-e) was killed raiding a temple to Helm in Dragonspear castle. His 2 other comrades were captured.

Also, dwarven sorceror 8th level named Rothell Kromlock was poisoned to death by wyverns east of Archenbridge. His party teleported out after being defeated by a half golem and his wyvern pets. Rothell was left behind as wyvern fodder. (Insert Jabba laugh)

The sorry tale of the unbelievably ill-fated Duncan Chiba:

Duncan Chiba was a fine man, a human LG exalted monk devoted to self-discipline, but not nearly to the point of the VoP monk in the same party. Maybe it was because he owed his life numerous times to his trusted Headband of Ferocity (effectively gives the Diehard feat), or maybe it was because he enjoyed a good drink now and then (always had a bottle of wine in his backpack). Regardless of his weakness for riches, he was still a good man.

But he had one fatal flaw, and that was the flaw of saving throws. The flaw of never being able to pass a single *******ed one.

A monk. The class with all good saves. On a 32 point buy. Never passed a save in his life. Never.

And this always ended with him paralyzed. He got paralyzed by the venomous bites of wicked creatures. He got held by evil spellcasters. Magical traps would freeze him in place. No matter what happened in any given battle, the man would be standing still through most of it.

A lucky combination of friends who would step in front of him and enemies who thought that the men swinging swords were a bigger danger than the unarmed man who couldn't help but just sit there kept him from being CDG'd, which is lucky, because he would never pass the save to survive it.

And when he wasn't practicing his statue act, he was being grappled. I can only think of one serious fight where Duncan was neither paralyzed nor grappled, and he only ever successfully initiated a grapple once (against a cleric who had, in the previous battle, got off a hold person on Duncan). He had Escape Artist maxxed and the Improved Grapple feat, but these trifles were no match for the endless stream of very large monsters, often with tentacles, that had decided to declare a jihad against our party.

It had gotten to the point where one night, I declared that I was nicknaming Duncan "The Immovable Monk," and that after he died, the people of Hommlet could build a memorial statue to him in their town square, and that, if painted, nobody there would be able to tell it from the real thing.

And that was the night that Duncan fought a medusa. Guess how his fort save went.

Last Thursday we were playing and I accidently killed the whole party (3rd through 6th Level)..including my own PC Caston an Elf Mage/Thief... One fire ball and chain reaction....Poof!!!!.....PC's, several magic items and an artifact all failing thier saving throws... We kind of vaporized... I have never seen that many lousy saving throw rolls rolled in a row in my life...or that many high damage rolls... Our new characters will be traveling through the area killing the strange magically mutated creatures that the area caused. It permanently glows magic now....

On the brite side... The local Bard made one heck of a good song about the whole thing....

My last PC to die was maybe 2 months ago. Her name was Lady Ranelle Banien, daughter of a moderate Noble Lord, Landen Banien. 4th level, LN wizard in a BirthRight campaign. The party tracked down a lead that we wernt supposed to bother with for a few more levels, ended up engaging a criminal smuggling organization at their base. The tough, strong dwarf convinced the party to attack the base in surprise. The dwarf charges at the front entrance before they know we are there. Makes a great Str check, bursts THROUGH the door running, and runs right into a 60 ft. pit. Big bad fighter lives, but stuck in bottom of pit for rest of encounter. The monk in the party rushes in behind him. Now arrows are raining down upon myself and the ranger in the party from 2nd story windows of the building we are attacking. I run behind another building for cover and use a scroll of Alter Self, making me look like one of the gang's thugs we had encountered earlier (hoping to get inside without the guys targeting me with arrows, thinking I was one of their own.) While I am doing this, ranger drinks a potion of jump, and leaps through a 2nd story window to engage the archers. I make it inside and fin the monk being skewered by a pirate looking guy ( leader of the band of criminals). The monk falls and pirate puts sword to his throat, threatening a coup de grace. I'm standing there at the hole in the door, seeing the monk bleeding to death with the sword at his throat and hearing the dwarf yelling and cursing from the bottom of the pit. I made a sense motive check to see if the guy would really let the monk live if I disengaged. Naturally, I roll a one so I think he is going to kill him for sure if I don not do something. So, I attack with a web spell since my intiative was before his. The web goes off and holds the pirate stuck. I move into the room to free the monk and hear the pirat say. "all right boys, light it up!" torched then stick through holes in the walls, ignighting my web. we all take burning damage, the pirate is freed, and sticks his sword through the monks throat killing him. He then kicksks the body down the pit and it lands right on the dwarf and basicllay "pops". In rage, I start blasting every spell I have. He keeps his distance and keeps blasting me with a wand of magic missile (3 missiles). Finally, I am down to just a few hit points. I can either drink a cure light and flee, or balst again and try to get to the ranger (who is still slaughtering mook archers on the 2nd floor). I choose to blast, sensing that all was lost any way, and use my move action to get out the door to call for the ranger's aid. On his turn, he blasts me with another charge from the wand, knocking me to negatives, but not dead. He then flees the scene. The ranger comes back the next round, and walks right by me bleeding to death in the street (I still had the Alter Self effect on, so he thought I was just another thug we had taken out in the battle. He hears the dwarf cursing from the bottom of the pit, and begins to try and help him out, leaving me to bleed to death in the street. Once the dwarf is out, I am very much dead, and my spell has worn off. They pull what is left of the monk out of the pit, see me laying in the street, gather up our bodies and take us off to be buried. Here is where it gets worse. The city is very corrupt. When a few town guards see them walking through the street with 2 bodies, they go to question them. The dwarf is in a pretty foul mood, having been stuck in the pit forced to hear his friends falling in combat and being unable to do anything about it. Not to metion he is "wearing" pieces of the monks body (blood and crap all over him where the monks body "popped" when it hit him) The ranger explains what happened and the guards dont seem to care much. They do however make it clear that other guards may find them suspicious walking the streets covered in blood, and may not be so understanding to the situation (letting them know that they want a bribe and they will make sure they are not bothered any more.) the ranger hands them a pouch of gold, which infuriates the dwarf (he was LG) After the payment, the guard makes the comment that they will "relieve the dwarf of his coat, and they can be on their way" The guard makes his way over to the dwarf, who has had quite enough. When he reaches out to the dwarf, the dwarf scremas in rage "You're not taking MY coat!!!!!" and then proceeds to give the man a mighty smack with his hammer. The gueard drops and the other guard, in horror, grabs his whistle and starts blowing. The ranger, shacking his head, moves off to an alley and makes good his escape, leaving the dwarf to his troubles. Now town guards are coming out of everywhere. The veteran dwarf has no trouble fighting them off, but as he makes his way through the city, more and more come at him. He is fighting to subdue, and not to kill, hoping to just make his way out. He is finally surrounded by a group with one on a horse (obviosly the captain). The one on horseback asks him to surrender so that he can be taken to trial for murder. The dwarf did not realize that the first guard he attacked died from his wound. The dwarf refused to surrender to a corrupt government and law system, and asked that he just be aloowed to leave. The request was of course denied, and he had to fight his way out of the city. He did manage to escape, but now is wanted for murder. Upon reflection (and the dm clearing up what happened). the dwarf realized that he did not even own a coat. The "coat" that the guard was going to "remove" was in fact the blood and gore that the dwarf was covered in from the monks body. The guard was only going to go wash him down so he wouldnt look like he had just slaughtered someone. It was a total mess. 2 of the party memebers dead, and one of the 2 survivors ran out of town as a murderer. Even with all the screw ups and extremley bad ending, it was one of the most fun sessions I have played in a very long time. It was really great fun! We havnt played that campaign since that night, though the monk player and I have rolled up new characters. Oh yeah, it turns out the the pirate looking guy was a 9th or 10th level rogue. No wonder we got stomped, but he did tell us that he was down to 4 hit points when he finally escaped. So close, and yet so far.....

Angel Eyes, Soldier/Dark Side Marauder: Killed by an alchemically modified two-headed Krayt dragon because of a compulsion to attack it, even though he was very low on vitality and at half wounds.

Buck Ronan, Monk: Drained to death by a vampire. Lasted less than two sessions.

Arana Ling, Scout/Soldier/Elite Trooper: Blown up by her own allies because they thought she'd sold them out to the Jedi. The equivalent of eight thermal detonators went off on my hips, taking from full VP/WP to -91. Held the record for farthest into the negatives until Chrome-Plated Death got bombarded from orbit to -118. Lasted less than two sessions.

"Fancy Feet" Hogan Half-Elf: (Paladin of Deark 11th, Wiz 2nd, Bladesinger 10th, Duelist 2nd, Weaponmaster 2nd, Blade Dancer 4th.) Accepted a challenge offered by Thorn a.k.a. Barnicle Bolim Xill: (Rogue 3rd, Fighter 2nd, Ranger 5th, Ninja of Cresent Moon 10th, Bloodhound 5th, Assassin 3rd, Ninja Spy 4th.)

The combatants were 35 feet apart at the start of the fight.

Hogan gets 13 for init, Thorn gets 12.

Round 1: Hogan uses his free action spell as a bladesinger to cast displacement, then he moved in and attacked and hit for a x5 crit of 89 dam, Thorn missed his Opp, and Hogan then used his Spring attack feat to move away 35' since his normal movement is 70' thanks to the Bladedancer PrC.

Thorn quickdraws to his bows since being a Xill makes it able for him to use 2 bows. He full attacks and has 4 possible hits, but 3 are displaced, 1 hit for 14 dam.

Round 2: Hogan uses his free action spell to cast D-Door to be right in front of Thorn and full attacks landing 3 hits for 77 dam. Thorns Opp attack is displaced. Thorn full attacks, quickdrawing using his Flick of the Wrist feat, he has 4 possible hits when he rolls 1 on 8. 2 of the possible hits are displaced, the ones that got through they were both Flick of the Wrist hits doing 101 dam.

Round 3: Hogan free action casts Blur, then full attacks hitting 5 of 6 times doing 131 damage which dropped Thorn to -5. Hogan then Coup De Graced Thorn since it was a match to the death. Upon doing such, Thorn reverted to his true form (Mt Dwarf) before being cursed by Palm to be a Xill.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In round 2 I made a mistake allowing Thorn to make multiple attacks using the benefit of Flick of the Wrist, but it did not impact the outcome of the battle.

The last hero I had die on me (and not come back) was a half-elf paladin, Christine. She was fighting valiantly against a red dragon, and kept hacking away at the thing with her Holy Avenger. The rest of the party was wiped out (but were unconscious), and I was reduced to 4 hp going into one round. The dragon and I tied for initiative, and as I thrust my sword into its belly to finish the beast off, it breathed its infernal weapon of fire on me. Guess what? I rolled a 1 on my save and took 150 points of damage (house rule: roll a 1 on a save, take max damage, roll a 20 on a save, take [half of] minimum damage). That dropped me to... -146 hit points. To top it off, my holy avenger and +2 plate both rolled 2's on their saves and melted. When the party eventually came to and tried to resurrect me, I rolled a 00 on my RS roll. At least I went out valiantly.

Krull, Dwarf Barbarian 4 - He almost took out a troll! I was in a rage, and the moment I came i out, I would be at -8. The druid then decided that he would be able to come back, and cast a web spell on the area. It caught me, and not the troll. One hit was enough to take me out. Gawd, let's see which I can remember?

My first ever character was a D&D Basic Dwarf named Duergar. I was the DM, in our group's first ever game, but he still got killed in a classic save or die trap: falling roof! The rest of the party was TPK'ed by a white dragon later on (I was still learning game balance...)

Then there was my lvl 1 human paladin, Galdor. He was captured by drow, and was wearing a ring of regeneration. The ring could not be removed, so the drow cut his hand off, and he bled to death.

There was also Nobb of the Shadows, currently a lvl 20 halfling thief and retired. He survived for a long time, until about lvl 18. The only thing that could kill him? Himself. Mirror of Opposition. Both opponents had about 10 hp left at the end, and I lost initiative. A reincarnation was on hand to bring me back as a female half-elf. One wish later, and I was back to my old self.

I played one guy, Therin, who was a lvl 1 human fighter. I basically played him as a farmer, with no armour and a quarterstaff. He got clubbed by an ogre.

Then there was a nameless human fighter who used a bladed shield on each arm. He fell into a very deep chasm.

I also had a half-orc barbarian who died in his very first adventure. There was a huge magical gem or something we had to destroy, for reasons I forget. So of course I stepped up and gave it a swat with my greataxe. The ensuing explosion killed me, but I saved a village, at least!

NPCs:

The two best deaths I've had as a DM were from the illustrious DuBont family, who my players will remember well. We were playing the 2e module The Shattered Circle (my all-time fave), and the players got completely stuck in a trap, with only one character free. So he gets the bright idea to leave the dungeon and petition the local lord for help. I was put on the spot. So I scoured my list of NPCs, and the local shopkeep suddenly became the local lord, the irritatingly French Jacques DuBont. DuBont, with his desire to "sally forth to adventure!" came back to the dungeon, solved the trap, and ran along with the party. He came to a grisly end at the hands of some web-birds, who layed eggs inside him. The PCs cut him open to get the eggs, but their tender ministrations killed him.

BUT, the saga of the DuBonts did not end there! At Jacque's funeral, the PCs met the rest of his irritatingly French family, including his son Henri. Henri wanted vengeance, so he accompanied the party. He got killed by the chitine priest on Level 2 of the dungeon. Henri was an impetuous sort, and he charged the priest. The party cleric decided to cast Web. Web, on a spider-man. Henri was caught in the web, but I ruled that the chitine was immune (hey, it was the end of a session. I wanted a better fight.) He crawled up onto the webs and delivered three crits to the struggling DuBont. Poor guy... The party later went on a quest to raise him from the dead, but the scroll they discovered was a bit faulty, and Henri came back as Lawful Evil (as did a few other dead PCs). A few misunderstandings later, and he arrested the PCs and stole all of their magical items. It's a damn shame that the campaign ended before they could meet him again.

According to the tales of the bards of Moray, the lad who would grow into Stradidar was born to the fierce Morayan clan MacFinnian, which suffered the ill fate of an exceptionally bloodthirsty Northman raid when Stradidar was still but 14 winters. While the MacFinnian's were slaughtered to a man, young Stradidar nevertheless survived by virtue of having been away receiving the hospitality of the mighty clan Mac Art.

Now, the Mac Arts were perhaps the most powerful and warlike clan on all of Moray, and were greatly renowned amongst their fellow Morayans for their legendary "reavers", the seafaring bands of raiders they sent forth to harry the yellow beards. Thus, when the slaughter of the MacFinnians was discovered it took little for young Stradidar to inspire them to vengeance and slaughter.

And so it was that the last of the MacFinnians led a band of wild Morayan reavers on the trail of what turned out to be an outlaw band of Northman. The folk of Oman's Island suffered gravely that spring, but in the end this band of "vikings" was found and slaughtered to a man.

For the next two years Stradidar lived amongst the Mac Arts as one of them, learning each of the heroes skills they taught. It was during this time that he formed his great friendship with the short, stocky powerhouse called only the Reacher amongst foreigners, but in due time the last of the MacFinnians is known to have ventured forth on his own.

Some bards say that Stradidar went forth into Myrloch Vale during this time, there to die and find his way to the halls of his ancestors. Here it is said he came face to face with the Shee, but rather than dying, as is the fate of all who behold the fabled rider, she is said to have lain with him, to have taught him the art of swordsmanship, and to have at last awarded him the fabled blade Deathrise.

Other bards say that he ventured to Waterdeep during this time, where he hooked up with a band of deceitful adventurers who betrayed him and left him for dead at a ruin some days east of the City of Splendours. They go on to tell of how Stradidar was found, nursed back to health, and taught the art of swordsmanship by a mysterious hermit known only as the Prince of Swords. Before his departure, this hermit gifted him with the blade Deathrise.

Either way, it eventually came to pass that in the year 1345 DR Stradidar returned to the Moonshaes, where he became a scout in the army of King Brian Kendrick of Corwell. Over the next two years, the man who would become renowned as the Swordwielder met up with his old friend the Reacher, and together aided the young Tristan Kendrick in defeating Kazgoroth and establishing his rule as High-King of the Ffolk.

In the year 1347 DR, or the 1st year of the reign of High-King Tristan Kendrick, Stradidar and the Reacher departed the Moonshaes. They soon came to rest in Tethyr and found employment in the service of Baron Draknoth of the Purple Marches. After saving the Baron from an attempted assassination, and consequently undertaking a couple of missions on his behalf, the Morayans earned the contempt of a certain Count Albreks of Vintor. Albreks subsequently arranged the death of Baron Draknoth's wife and children, and then had the Morays framed for it.

During their time in prison, they met a former pirate captain named Harguth the Black. He spoke often of a map concealed in a tattoo found on the back of the daughter of a powerful Amnian merchant. A map whispered to lead to an unimaginable horde of gold and treasure.

It soon came to pass that the Morayans and a host of other prisoners were released during the Alemandrian Interrugum, when the folk of Tethyr rose up to slay and drive out their decadent nobility. Escaping with Harguth, the two eventually found themselves as members of the pirate-captains crew, plundering the coasts of Tethyr and Amn. In time, the pirates managed a bold kidnapping of the aforementioned merchant's daughter, who turned out to be a beautiful lass by the name of Cassalandra. No sooner had she been brought on board, then Harguth attempt to rape the lass, only to be discovered and slain by Stradidar.

Having been wise to the fact that Harguth had been withholding loot from the rest of the crew, the Swordwielder used this as a justification for his killing of pirate captain. Then with the backing of the Reacher (and, yeah, okay, a few others I suppose) the Swordwielder assumed a command of the ship.

Following the map to the jungles of Chult, the vessel was intercepted by a trio of Amnian warships. Cassalandra was rescued, and, despite her pleas, the pirate ship destroyed off the coast of Calimshan.

As fate would have it, the Morayans washed up upon the shores of Calimshan, where they were found by Schaminder, the daughter of the Pasha Siddhartha of Calimshan. Taking pity on the barbarians, especially the dashing one, the princess had her servants take them back to the palace and nurse them back to health. Her father however, did not take well to the foreigners, and immediately sent them forth to break a curse that had brought an endless drought to the eastern reaches of his realm. When the Morayans returned successful, the Pasha and his would-be son-in-law, Brahanu of Schamedar, feigned glee and ordered a great victory feast for the heroes. Their food and drink however was drugged. When next they awoke, they were in chains and en route to the mines of Sa'Hallum in the Wormbone Hills of the Western Shaar.

They did not linger there very long before staging a general escape in the year 1350 DR, and making there way northward. While being chased through the lands of the Balithzarites, the duo took refuge in an old ruin into which their pursuers would not follow. Within they encountered a hideous demon, managed to slay it, and in the process brought the ruin down. When the Morayans emerged, they found themselves surrounded by Balithzarites. Rather than attacking them however, they bowed deeply and brought them back to their camp to meet their chieftain. It was here that they were first called the "dra'uk omerdras" or "Brothers of Doom".

Making their way up through the Border Kingdoms and through the Vilhon Reach, and into Sembia and the Moonsea South, the legend of the Brothers of Doom began to grow. In Chondath, the First Lord Hadrian of Arrabar was toppled and Eles Wianar put in his stead by the Morayans, while following another backhanded betrayal by trothless mainlanders, they placed the severed head of an intermediate member of the Sembian Cult of the Dragon upon a pike atop the tallest hill in sight of Urmlaspyr ... the rune of warning cut into its forehead.

With the eruption of civil war in Yulash the Brothers of Doom moved north from Urmlaspyr to enlist in the army of Lord Melvuth Greystone of the House of Greystone. Over the course of the next year they completed a number of missions and scored many fine military victories for House Greystone; soon finding themselves ranking officers and confidants of Lord Greystone himself.

As the war heated up, the Zhents began to back certain factions in the war, sending their troops in under the aegis of "peace-keepers". Hillsfar responded in kind, offering Melvuth (amongst others) its aid. The Brothers of Doom strongly discouraged Melvuth from accepting an outside alliance, and he followed their counsels. Unfortunately, within the month Melvuth was assassinated and the Brothers of Doom captured and thrown into the arena at Hillsfar.

Having won the favour of the crowd, it came to pass that Maalthiir offered the Brothers of Doom their freedom if they could complete his "nine trials". Though successful in this endeavour, Maalthiir sought to keep the Morayans imprisoned in the darkest dungeons of Hillsfar, but they were aided in escaping by a sympathetic Red Plume named Braccio of Ordulin.

Escaping to Braccio's Ordulin estate with Maalthiir prized possession, the priceless gem known as the Emerald Tear, it was not long before assassins came for the lot of them. Eventually, a frustrated Maalthiir hired the feared assassin Thistlork of Thay. Like the others however, both the assassin and his minions were set upon and slain by the Morayan savages. The Brothers then took Thistlork's severed head, cut the rune of warning into its forehead, and then sent it to Maalthiir in a box.

In the year 1356 DR, the Brothers signed on as mercenaries in Sembia's war against Lashan of Scardale. Meeting up with a fellow islander, a northman by the name of Illyass Vandervin, the duo next spent some time exploring the ruins of Myth Drannor.

In the year 1357 DR, it came to pass that the Brothers of Doom were hired by a mysterious employer to slay an evil witch named Midnight. When Stradidar first came face to face with the witch however, he found himself smitten with her beauty. The great womanizer submitted his sword to her service, and much time was spent fighting off a string of Zhentarim assassins, until at length, the lot of them found themselves embroiled in the Avatar Wars.

During the course of this legendary adventure, the love between Stradidar and Midnight grew to heights every bit as great as the depths of contempt that the Brothers came to hold Cyric in. That shifty eyed knave was often the subject of ridicule and abuse from the Morayans, who gave him all of the worst trail jobs.

As is well known, the Tablets of Fate were restored to Ao in the end, and Midnight, Cyric, and Kelemvor ascended to godhood. What is less known however is that Stradidar and the Reacher were also offered godhood by Ao. Their reply was plain and simple, "as Morayans it would be redundant."

As Midnights first act of godhood, Ao allowed her to grant the Brothers of Doom a gift ... complete immunity to all scrying, such that Cyric could never locate them in search of vengeance.

Returning to the Moonshae's in the year 1358 DR, the Brothers of Doom arrived to find High-King Tristan recently murdered, the lands of the Ffolk in chaos, and the Beast roaming the isles once more. So it was that the legendary brothers helped install Tristan's young daughter Alicia upon the throne of Callidyr, reunited the Ffolk under her rule, and beat the less sensible of the northman into submission.

Finally, in the year 1360 DR, Stradidar went forth alone into Myrloch Vale. He was armed with the legendary Sword of Cymrych Hugh, and within the Bosom of the Earthmother fought a vicious duel with Kazgoroth.

For a long time the bards of the Moonshaes sang of how each destroyed the other in this final battle.

The truth of the matter however, was that the worshippers of the dead god Bhaal had followed the Brothers of Doom to the Moonshaes, and sought vengeance on them for the death of their god. Thus, they ambushed a muchly weakened Stradidar as he made his why out of Myrloch Vale. They encased the hero in a block of amber and subsequently buried him deep beneath an ancient ruin in the eastern reaches of Corwell.

There he has remained, hidden from the world, ever since ....

Mad Daerek had the following deaths. His computer is ill, but he'll post details on the characters ASAP.

-Jonahs Human Spelltheif was slain by when he failed his saves versus a poisoned dart while clearing out a catacomb under the Capt of the Guard in Balders Gate.

-Snake Human Fighter, Knifefighter. Was slain during battle in the Nether Mountains while fighting a Cloud Giant Sorcerer who was under the effects of Tensers Transformation. The Cloud Giant also put another PC (Keledor) down to -5, but another PC (Jazz) healed him before it was too late.

Sir Alexander Helmsley suffered a gruesome fate at the hands(or claws) of a Fang Dragon. While he and his party were making their way throught the Nether Mountains, a fang dragon swept down from the sky and snatch him up. After flying for a while, he was then dropped. Although the initial impact didn't kill him, the damage from the sharp rocks as he slid hundreds of feet did. Needless to say he was sufficiently tenderized for the dragon at the end of his descent... Rest in pieces sir knight!

Jeez, I wanna be in a Star Wars game. That's a whole lot more interesting than any DnD game I've been in.

Games really depend a lot on the GM, I've been in some pretty crappy Star Wars games.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and on the actual topic I've had a lot of characters that died over the years. One of my first (1E) characters, an Elven Assassin, perished when he was imprisoned in a Wall of Ice. I imagine he probably succumbed to hypothermia before dying of dehydration. That was the first one to go.

NPC:
Draimuir was the first benefactor of the PC's during my most recent campaign. He was a CG ex-adventurer weapons merchant who hired the PC's to help him guard a shipment of weapons that was worth some much gold he was overseeing the job personally. Unbeknownst to him his shipment was being used as a cover to transport a biological weapon to a Blackguard BBEG (who was the brother of a PC), and when the weapon was unleashed against his hometown, killing his wife and 5-year-old daughter. Haunted by their deaths and believing the fault to be his own, Draimuir joined with the PC's briefly to hunt down the Blackguard. He and the PC's split up while infiltrating the Blackguards keep, and he took on the murderer of his family single-handedly. He was killed while the PC's watched helplessly. A tragic ending for a very tragic character.

I had decided to bring him back later on in the campaign as an undead assassin sent after the PC's by the BBEG, and because I had nothing better to do, had created the spellstitched uber-assassin of death version of him waaaay ahead of time, before he had even died. When I eventually came around to bringing him back (characters were 6-8 levels higher then when he had died), it was a massively tense battle, but the exorcist theme music playing in the background was interrupted by a player piping up, "Hey, wait a second, didn't we cremate him when he died?"

  :embarrass :allalone:

Upon consultation of notes from previous sessions, it was decided (after the fight, of course) that he indeed had been cremated. My response?

"Uhhh, a wizard did it?"

Above the PC Alexander was posted by Mad Deark. The following NPCs had died at the weapons and spell of the party he was part of.

First to die was about 14 monks with the order of the Lady's Peak Monestary in the Nether Mountains 5 base Frost Giants and 1 10th Blackguard Frost Giant. 26 monks of the order managed to escape.

Later the party tracked more of the Frost Giant Clan and killed 4 more of them.

Then as the party was exiting a cave, they were ambushed by the Frost Giant King (Fighter 6, Ranger 10) and 4 more base Frost Giants and a 12th level human cleric of Loviatar who had been the leader of the Lady's Peak Monestary. All were slain by the party after a nail biting and harrowing battle.

I was DM, and had a player character who was a Trumpet Archon. Level 10-12. By blowing his trumpet he can stun anything with awe in how beautiful it is, unless they save. So he runs up to a huge plant-beast and blows the horn. It saves and then swallows him whole. He's ressurected and later tries to do the same thing to a Gargantual Scorpion. It gets an attack of opportunity. Hits. Grapples. Snaps him in half with one claw. Rest of party runs for the hills.

Same player, different character: good-aligned succubus. Beaten to death by a 3.0 ed. Hasted clay golem. The rest of the party managed to get away, but they never did kill that golem.

My own character was a rogue psionisist in 2nd ed. Ravenloft. He had the dark power of heightened hearing and the psionic ability to turn into shadow form. He was in shadow form sneaking around a tavern during a particularly tense standoff. He was right next a summoned Githyanki when the party's gnome fired his pistol. The loud noise stunned me due to my heightened hearing and I fell like a chunk of dead meat at the feet of the githyanki just as the standoff became combat. One round later I was dead meat. That character was never ressurected.

Here lies Oliver Risken, He was a level 14 Human, Rogue, Ranger, Prime Underdark Guide. He had just recovered from his injuries after weeks of captivity at the hands of the Drow--which a party of adventurers had bought his freedom from being traded to the Zhents.

He was at a Pub "The Holy Boot" in Yulash chatting with some friends about a tunnel that connected to another tunnel that leads to Fortress Tethymar and the Dungeons of Zhentil Keep. The bartender brough him another ale, which he downed a few rounds later, and then failed both his saving throws vs. DC 22 1d6|2d6 con poison and died. The party went looking for the bartender and found him in the back of bar, dead with 3 brand new Zhent Minted Platnium Pieces and a Garrotte Wire around his neck.

Pelleron human fighter 10th highest level member in a 4 person party. Killed only once, never knocked out. It was a very lethal campaign. That I only died once is a feat worth retelling as the following is a tally. Someone died about every other session including 1 henchman, 1 barbarian/cleric, 1 ranger/bloodhound twice w/fighting her spiecies enemies, 1 dwarven cleric twice, 1 halfling rogue, 1 elven mage, 1 dwarven paladin cohort. We started at 4th level so all of this happened in about 6 levels.

While hunting down an old nemisis on the Glacier of the White Worm.
Subjected to 4 consecutive empowered Ice Storm spells cast by 4 different frost giants in the same round (frost giants listed in Frostburn).

Sadly enough I've never played a single character long enough to get them killed. There was a group of characters I played (and am probally going to be re-playing soon) who I played for a long time, but they have a good survivability rate (especialy considering they get all there minions to do everything for them and never do anything themselves).

Slade Bizmark Lvl 3 Elf Favoured Soul. Winged Template (just for flavour to get the FS wings early) Though presented to the party as a male fighter, divine spellcasting meant to be kept secret due to characters background. Born a female elf, given wings by Olidammana. Was apprentice by the town Healer. Towns Chief killed the Healer in a jealous rage because he wanted his son to become the apprentice, my character was framed and took on the guise of Slade.
First showed up in campaign while they were being attacked by undead Thrikreen, I saved one of the party members and she befriended me. Apparently the LE Elf Thief is racist and vies winged elves as freaks of nature and killed me in my sleep. Total time making and researching for character. 8 hrs. Lifespan in actual gameplay, 8 minutes.
The DM even did alot to try and make it difficult for the thief to kill me, having a Dire Bear attack the party while he was trying to snipe my sleeping body from a tree. Thief was knocked out by the Dire Bear and the Fighter Girl I saved chopped his head off.

In Starwars my Neti Scout/Changling/Sith Accolyte (total level 12) was vaporized by some sort of singularity weapon this week too. Just when she was starting to redeem herself. She likely would have lived if she hadn't stopped to try and save a street kid dismembered by a rocket.

Vaelis aka "Blackblade", Tiefling Leader of the Kobold-Knights of Shadow. Crushed under the weight of a 40 ton boulder whose shadow he couldn't seem to slip through. (Bad, evil DM).

Magnyr Forgesinger, Dwarven Paladin/Barbarian, Slayer of Meepo (accidentally) & the White Dragon. Slain valiantly covering his party's retreat.

Kazir, One-handed Monk of Anhur. Fell attempting to cross a pit his "friends" refused to toss a rope across.

Wadia "Flamespeaker" Vindrea, Fire Genasi Elementalist. Killed by a Fey'ri while defending her Quaggoth friend (took the butthead with me, though).

And now, for my favorite PC death created solely by my player's actions:

Entire party slain, including key NPC by elven wizard possessed by the lich whose phylactery he was carrying.

I'm fortunate in that not one of my PCs has ever died, though they have come close on more than one occasion. In fact, my Wizard (Morganth Stormcrow) is now 451 years old and Level 68, with a Half-Pheonix (Don't ask :P) daughter at Level 32 Rogue (Morina Stormcrow) :D

There was the rest of his adventuring party that died though,
Beldor Hasselfeld - Fighter. Gained a throne and was killed to be usurped
Delvar Ironfist - Fighter. Crushed under rubble when a mining expedition of his went horribly wrong
Lordan Mightfist - Cleric. Old age
*nicknamed* Slinker - Hung for robbery, multiple times. Eventually he died when he slept with a young daughter of a friend...

A PC I DMed for for several years is perhaps the most fitting to enshrine here. While he is still alive, he has 9 resurrections to his credit.

R.I.P. - Minatron Bloodflame Archmage of Paranoia... Again

This character, still alive and kicking (the buckett) in an epic (not DMed by me anymore) game at Drow Wizard29/Archmage5, has "survived" from 2nd edition AD&D through to 3.5, by being repeatedly resurrected.

His most stunning accomplishments however, despite kicking the buckett no less than 9 times in his career, was not dying after a 200 foot plumet into and army of the dead while wrestling with an angry lich king. After reaching 3.5 rules he has been invincible, narrowly escaping the clutches of his 10th death numerous times.

His career began as a level 5 2nd edition drow wizard.

Waddo, the greatest thief in the realms, seen while hiding only once by Drizzt himself, lent his blades fearlessly to a battle against the dread lich Dread'darrith because let's just say he owed Tempus a favor. While the paladin, Xander, and the fighter, Raymond, crossed swords with vampires, our army of barbarians waded into fierce melee against hundreds of zombies and ghouls. During the fracas, Waddo, not much one for battle, sabotaged the enemy's war machines until he entered a room with horribly cursed undead creature that I, as a player, still don't recognize from any other source. The creature proceeded to curse Waddo.

DM: You lose 10% hit points every round until you die.
Waddo: Oh Gods I need a cleric! Cleric! Cleeeerrrrriiiiiiccccc!!!!!!

The undead creature was summarily slain by the seven or eight clerics in the room Waddo ran screaming from. He died, predictably, nine rounds later.

However, on the side of good, that battle saw no permanent death, as everyone was raised or resurrected. The lich, on the other hand, is gone from this world.

Well this is the tale of my level one elvish rogue. To score points with a thieves guild he decided to sneak into a guarded town and steal some things inside. After searching he found the fabled secret entrance to the town. Unfortunatley he was great by a big fat ugly orc. After some roleplaying and diplomacy checks I managed to convince him to go drinking with him. He forget about his duty of protecting the entrance and we were off and our merry way. I ended up with my face in his armpit him drinking madly and me not getting a sip. He later dragged me up to his room and said we would be great pals. He was on the top bunk and I was on the bottom. His bed was soaked with his urine and its started to leak on me. I slowly snuck out but in the process tripped over his bucket that he used as a toilet. He woke up and was enraged, I ducked the question and said someone was attacking us. He burst through the door and blocked the stairs swinging his greataxe around in circles. I being a thief tried to search the other rooms of the Inn while people were distracted but in the process got two darts in my shoulder. I decided to get the heck out of there. I found the exit and fell through a broken step. I stumbled out into the road. I wandered around for ten minutes when I found a hobo on the ground sleeping. Having lost all my other possesions I tried to pick pocket his dagger. He woke up and apparently was a powerful wizard. One fireball later, I was dead. Along with my intense liking of rogues and Orcs. My Dm was a pain in the a$$ back then. But now I am the DM and I am somewhat fairer with my adventure creating.

Through years and years (and years) of playing D&D/AD&D/D&D, i gathered an entire binder of characters (about 45). And of course, some of them eventually died one day. The ones i remember at first thought :

- Morgun : Human Priest 13 of Ahto. He was killed in a campaign by a white dragon, later had a chance to be raised but he chose to leave the material plane to get closer to his god, as his cult was fading away, the pantheon leaving the world.
- Maideer : Wood Elf Elementalist 13. He was killed by... undead, i think. Not sure anymore.
- Kyen-Wan : Human Piao-Shi 4. He was killed in a battle, defending a convoy. The mountain pass where this happened was given his name. Nice ;)

Many others happened to get killed one day, but were brought back to life, so does it count?

I have, by far, more dead characters than any of the other players in my gaming circle. Not that I'm a bad player- just a bit reckless and generally unlucky. This list only includes characters from "serious" campaigns (i.e. lasted more than 3 sessions).

Killian Silvaris- Elf Bladesinger9 (Ad&D2ed), Killed by the Lightning Breath of a Blue Dragon while in the Hell (our only foray into that accursed plane)

Talon Redblade- Human PsychicWarrior4, swallowed whole by a giant Purple Worm; I knew I was going down before the fight even started. Everybody else in the group was like, "Let's just fight it for a round or two- to see how strong it is." I had first init, wormy had second, everyone else ran after they saw what happened to me.

Drake the Rake- Human Rogue5/Fighter2/Wizard2, Ahh Drake... what an awsome guy. Disintegrated by a Death Tyrant while away from the group; searching for treasure with the party's crazy monk. That monk had never before shown fear, but screamed like a little girl when I was zapped into dust.

Ryvan Calloway- Human Fighter3, My dream of playing a killing machine with a spiked chain, Combat Reflexes, Improved Trip and Disarm (tons of Attacks of Opportunity) was cut short when Ryvan was turned to stone by a Cockatrice (we were too low-level to find a means of turning him back.)

Rin Longtooth- Human Barbarian6, Died heroically fending off two Giant Flaming Skeletons (my DM likes to make up his own monsters). These things were tough, so I knew Rin wouldn't survive the fight. At least everyone else was able to get away while Rin held them at bay.

Alas, I too am the "How many is that NOW" club. I tend to play tank-types, altho I had a good 3 year run at the clerics. Have played for more years than I an remember but several characters have gone out in a blaze of glory.

Most notable deaths to date :
Human Paladin 6 : Was married to PC cleric, playing the Witchfire series. The PARTY bound and gagged the cleric, paid off the skiff captain and crew, attacked-subdued- bound-gagged-put in big sack-tied anchor to it and dropped me in the swamp.

Specialty priest of Azouth 10 / Psionist 11 (2ndED) : Original release of Labrynth of Madness. After buffing myself to near godlike status I fell victim to the party chant "Touch the box " poof (nothing like watching EVIL black energy tenntacles eat though your Otto's sphere and interial barrier in 1 round)

Current campaign : 4th cleric - drown in FP / Mage5 teleporting arrows from above trap / Invoker 7 Crushed by Iceworm + hacked to death by party trying to kill it/ Invoker 7 killed by Blue-mindcontrolled Minotaur PC/ current character NOT DEAD..........yet :pbbbtt: :gah:

While him and his party were doing all they could to excape the horrid vile chaos that is the Lair of Lyzandrith the mad, in greyhawk. It seemed suspiciously dark, and was later proven so for he crawled right into a sphere of ahnialation.

:weep: My first character death was a Half Elf Cleric named Shoad. He was turned to stone by a terrible creature.

I'm a DM now, so my last great NPC death was Crazy Joe. A random drifter the PC's decided to keep until they could find a way to cure his madness. (That was the players name for him, in truth he didn't know who he was, he just ran around with no pants and a crossbow with no string). RIP Joe, may you remain under that crashed Spelljammer, and not rise as a terrible undead. :weep:

A 6th level Half-Orc Barbarian who failed his saving throw when a Vampire Dominated him and turned him against his fellow adventurers. He killed the 5th level tiefling wizard with one swing, A critical (overkill) that left the mage at -14. It was described as a near-perfect beheading. The cleric (Pelor 6th level) tried to cast protection from evil, but rather than take a 5 foot step back, chose to use concentration and rolled a one...the fool. The resulting AoO didn't kill him, but left him unable to complete the spell...a disasterous fizzle. The rogue (6th level) feinted and succeeded. Daka swung his axe and finished the cleric, cleaving him and sending his axe into the rogue. The rogue valiantly tried to use his sneak attack (remember the feint) to hurt Daka and managed only to enrage him (lol...he had forgot to rage up to this point). The rogue ran, but the barbarians movement proved greater and over a long, protracted running battle, chopped the rogue to bits. The vampire drained Daka of his life and made him a spawn...

Gotta love those TPK's

Beaschal Luckknuckle, Male, Deep Gnome, Expert 3rd, Rogue 13th. He and his pals Wade and Feng (to be posted here by Mad Dearek) were around the area of Hillsfar on the trail of some Bandits who were raiding commerce that did not fly Zhents colors. As the party tracked the bandits to their camp, the party noticed that in one of the Shacks a group of bandits were "abusing" some of their prisoners. The party attacked. 5 of the 7 bandits in the first shack were slain, 2 escaped, 1 of 2 prisoners were resuced. Then party left the shack and found themselves being surrounded by the remaining 20+ bandits and the Bandit leader Allissya Veloom Swashbuckler 3rd, Fighter 2nd, Scout 10th. I've only lost one character: Braughtor Torrun, Dwarven Fighter 2, Wizard 6, Spellsword 6. Our group was running Maure castle, and we were having our final conftontation with the main bad guy; Eli Tomorast. He was a level 17 wizard with artifacts for hands.:twitch: (Gary Gygax is the devil.) Anyways, Everyone in the party except the dwarven Barbarian and I had been killed during the fight, and then the Barbarian switched sides. I had one hell of a time fighting both of them. I managed to survive for a while by using all of my one-shot items to boost my AC to about 45, but I only managed to kill my ex-party member before Eli dispelled my protections and tore me to pieces. He died brutally, but the whole thing frustrated the heck out of my DM.

- Alieko Nailo, a male elf ranger who had a tendency for helping all creatures big and small. Including feeding a large dire bear.
-Azreal Nailo, son of Alieko, ranger who died after delving to deep into the party's current activities.
-Charger Deathspear, half drow half fey corrupter, turned out to be the BBEG, and so he, his drider companion and his advanced howler pet died after taking down 4 of the 6 members of the party.
-Kelesh Skinflayer, LE cleric who died after the whole party got mauled by a werewolf at level 1 (there were 7 of us). This resulted in the death of 4 party members and 1 dwarf obtaining the title of 'Dwarven flail'.

Current character- Doomed to soon die

Tonight, in a battle versus a corrupted Adult Gold Dragon, Branna the Undead Slayer was slain in battle. She was Cleric 7th, Master of Radiance 5th, War Priest 4th of Lathander. She had taken a decent amount of damage from it's first breath attack, so did the rest of the party (Porthos and Sir Eldrick Murrow). Then the dragon crushed her. Before healing herself, she healed Porthos was critically wounded. The dragon then bite her, clawed, and killed her with a wing hit. Porthos and Sir Eldrick hurt the dragon bad, blinded it as a result of Porthos' Holy Aura. The dragon took to the air and breathed parting breath. Which turned Branna's body into ash. She was offered ressurection, but decided to enjoy the afterlife as a hero.

Earlier in the Night, Branna and Porthos has slain the BBEG named King Delgrath of the Hobgoblin Empire and destroyed the Artifact (homebrewed) called the Ax of the Lt. Which gave King Delgrath tremondous strength and a death touch 1/day.

Asrahaan the Turned - Level 3 Human Hooded Pupil Necromancer.

Swore allegiance to Orcus in the second session of play, the character was confiscated and made to a BBEG after that.
Asrahaan succumbed to the PC's themselves, after nearly finishing a ritual to bring a servant of Orcus into the Material Plane. The battle was rather anticlimactic, with the rogue PC leaping over a 10 ft gap with a 5 ft high ledge on the far side to melee the poor wizard to death, his lackeys could do nothing but watch on the other side, and die to the rest of the PC's.

His body was carried over a hundred miles to the nearest temple of St. Cuthbert for a reward promised to the Cleric and Rogue. His mind was questioned using Speak with Dead, confirming that he was indeed Asrahaan. His soul is left to wonder through the Material Plane, betrayed by his demonic leader, seeking vengeance upon all life.

Thorne NE Half-Tifling Rogue6(?)/Fighter2/Assassin1

The party, consisting of a NPC Cleric/Fighter/Rogue, a Sorceres/Dragon Desiple, a Sorceres/Fighter/Spellsword, & Thorne was at the bar when the party asked Thorne who's side he was on, the CE Cleric/Rogue that was his childhood friend & that was on our party before the Cleric/Fighter/Rogue came in(& before he tried to kill the Sorceres/Dragon Desiple). The party didnt like that I said "I wasn't taking sides" so they plotted against me. :plotting:

Later, when I was alone in my room, the Dragon Desiple knocked on my door, with alcoholic beverage in hand(including a knock-out drug mixed in). It was then that she tried it suduce me w/ such classy pick-up lines as "I'm so thorny" (side note=with that said combined with the fact that the Dragon Desiple was played by my sister was enough to send the DM into his 'little blue room' for several minutes :twitch: ).Sensing something was amiss, Thorne barrackated himself in his room & began dumping out his supply of alchemical substances & potions onto his bed as the other two hacked down the door. The Spellsword, armed with a +4 Mercial Greatsword, got first attack & scored her first successful crit reducing me to around -20 HP & the DM declared me cut in half along the waist.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!!

Upon killing me & researching spells to bring me back(Raise Dead-we were on a budget) they found that they had several days to do it in, so they decided to loot me. Upon dumping out my Bag of Holding they found, along with alot of other good stuff, dozens upon dozens of bolts of fabric(earlier in the day, I had to make a seamstress ...um... "disappear" & decided to take the most valueable fabric with me, rolling a 1 on my Appraise Check I determened the Care Bear fabric was worth the most but on the safe side i took it all). After quickly looting me they stuffed my lower half in the Bag for safe-keeping. Then as they went to retrieve my upper half they discovered that it's moving...& has fangs(unbeknownst to the party including Thorne, Thorne was cursed several adventures earlier into becoming a vampire when he reachs -10 HP).

Now that I,ve caught my second wind, I began casting Dominate Person on the party members beginning with the Spellsword(since she was the biggest damage dealer & presumably the weakest Will Save). She failed the save :evillaugh so i instucted her to attack the Cleric(can't have him turning me can I).So where was I, oh yes, the Spellsword walked over all this fabric to attack the cleric & I began trying to Dominate the Dragon Desiple(she kept on saving :tantrum: ) while the Spellsword scores another crit killing the Cleric. The DM passed me a note saying I can turn to Gasious Form & escape, I told him "Heck no, I want my legs back, all 3 of them, that's my best half :rimshot: ". Knowing that another order to stop would give her another save, not wanting to take the chance, I let her hack at the dead body of the Cleric until it was hamburg while Thorne asked the Dragon Desiple if she wanted to continue adventuring(either alive or undead)while I walked over on my hands, retrieved my legs, screwed them back on, stapled & duct taped in place. She turned me down but said she wouldn't try & destroy Thorne either. I released the Spellsword & repeated the offer, she turned me down, too. I then turned to Gasious Form & escaped.

One of my favorite characters... on one of his many (and probably most unspectacular) deaths, he fell victim to a darkness spell. Okay, its 0:35 (am, I guess), my computer is lagging like hell and I want to read One Piece (chapter 356, not that anyone is interested) so I didn´t read all of the post, but I will in a couple of days, sorry, but now I´m just going to post my (un)heroic characters rather... shamefull deaths:

First character, Geramon, 4 lvl rogue, 2 lvl bard, died after picking on the wrong half dragon. Might have been resurrectable, but he owed some money to his sorcerer friend, so the character in question just took all his valuables as a payment and left his body (throat slit half) lying on the road :P

Second character: First level female ranger, name not recovered by author, died as a prisoner of drows... well, she died in the hands of a lich, but the drows threw hwr at it, after they were done doing some... things to her. Might not even have died in the first place, if she just hadn´t spit on their high-priest :D

By the way, he was my second character. I'm only on my third.

Alas, Agog died in a gladiator fight against rasict humans. But the line of Agog does not end there! Agog II is my character now. He's a bounty hunter who wants to rule the world! So far in my game (almost three years running) there have been some comical and or brutal deaths of note and in no paticular order.

-Every citizen NPC in the town of Disabor slaughtered by "Bane"

-Barnabus Brightshield, level five human paladin NPC, killed in a negative energy blast from "Bane"

-Vlademir the Protector, level seven human paladin PC, beaten to formless pulp by "Bane"

-Lex, level seven human wizard PC, ripped in half by his own flesh golem(which as he learned, are immune to magic).

-Clegg, level one barbarian PC, standing on the deck of a ship exactly where a heavy catapault was fired at. Supreme overkill.

-Bob, level six barbarian/one frenzied berserker PC, died when the party held back and he charged three vampires by himself. He was slaughtered very quickly.

There are alot of others, but none come to mind right now. Also, these are only from the game I DM. There have been many other funny deaths I remember outside this game that I will add later.

Druid Companion: Plague (a large rat)

Killed by hobgoblins in a mysterious cave. This one cave added more deaths later... see below.

Daxin: Human Barbarian 2
Ardis: Elven Druid 2
Druid Companion: DarkTide (a panther)

All died in a battle with two wrogs. The PCs unknowingly cleared the worgs' cave of goblins, and the worgs let them live for it. However, the PCs decided they wanted the caves for themselves... bad idea. Moral of the story = Worgs kill dudes.

A recent death this is, just yesterday. (or today, if you live in the US) The first one in my campaign of 13 sessions.

Ghazkull. CG Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1/Rogue 1/Ranger 1 wielding either a Maul, a Greataxe (Orcish Battleaxe as he calls it) or a Falchion he bought only that session.

The party got sent on a reconnaissance mission to seek out and infiltrate a Yuan-ti hideout suspected of connections with the upcoming invasion of the Drow. Justt before the entrance, the party got ambushed by a group of 10 Ti-Khana lizards (The sort that has con poison, Only CR 1/3 each, it should have been easy).
The lizards nearly overwhelmed the party, but as one sword hit its mark, one lizard died. The rest, however, sought to overwhelm the party with their poison.
And that is how Ghazkull died. 4 doses of venom had their chance to fully run their course. Ghazkull passed from the world of the living just as the last of the lizards met their maker.

A Half-Orc, who was sneaky, drank nothing but water, and had a human for a master. Killed by a lizard.
Rest in Peace.

I have recorded at least 15 new characters in my Epic game (two of my players are responsible for playing 11 of them out of five players :)) and I'm hard-pressed to remember any of their names. However, if nobody minds, I'll list my own Epic character (a player wanted to be a DM for a change) who didn't actually die, but had to retire from active game...

In the year of the honoured gods 551 the death knight sir Gothar the Accursed of the House of Barandun ascended to the godhood, sponsored by the God of Darkness and Evil himself. The blasphemous crimes committed by the most hated death knight of the northern lands include patricide, conspiring with the most powerful wizard-king of all time in order to achieve world domination, murdering his own friend who tried to stop Rexus the Great's (the wizard-king in question) schemes, murdering one of the noble and good-hearted wizard-kings who sought to prevent Rexus's dominance and thus caused indirectly the Great Cataclysm, which resulted in the end of the time of the wizard-kings, the splitting of mountain ranges, the devastation of great a many land, and the changed rules that governed magic. It was this terrible crime that brought the terrible curse of undeath upon the ambitious and blackhearted knight, not worthy of his honoured status in the Order of Eagle, who had already been seduced by the wicked arts of witchcraft. And for over 550 years the death knight sat on his blackened throne in his heritary castle, surrounded by mad ghosts and dark spirits of the ancient times when nature itself was more wild and dangerous, and accompanied by his cruel, but loyal, familiar, the worg Fenrir. And always would the blood of his father and his friend be seen in that castle in the rooms where the foul deeds had been committed, and always would Gothar remember the curse that the dying wizard-king had cast upon him for Gothar's damned ambition and lust for power and magic.

The Knight of the Black Flame - so known for the blackened image of a flame on his armour, earned after defeating a destructive red dragon - , also known as the Lord of the Wolves, would join forces with mortal adventurers to stop two Lord Faustus (the first one was a death knight near divine, and the second one a demonic monk) from gaining world domination. However, once again Gothar would earn his nickname the Accursed by betraying his companions, opening the gates of a sealed and forbidden city of ancient demonic mage-rulers and becoming its new dark king, capturing thousands of innocents while trying to open magical gates that would have allowed Gothar to gather even more power to himself than a "mere" army of indestructible sand warriors, and trying to become a new wizard-king at any costs. Fortunately the curse of the death knight was too strong and Gothar did not fulfill his wicked dream - first a ghost elf warrior burned the spellbooks of Rexus, thus preventing the Knight of the Black Flame from using them; and then an ancient spirit of entropy demanded Gothar to hand over the magical bracers which would allow anyone to use the power of the Source (a fountain from which all magic came). However, the evil knight had sworn allegiance to the Dark God and instead of giving up the bracers, he threw them into the Source, restoring the spirit of the world fully and "earning" - after so many wicked deeds and betrayals - his place besides his dark patron as a terrible god of evil.

But the darkness of Gothar would be matched by the gentle light of the half-celestial monk Leon, who had also battled both Lords Faustus (and the demonic monk one had actually been Leon's master, but had fooled him greatly), who also ascended, but not for the foulness of his spirit, but the bravery, goodness and love of his soul. Those two gods would forever be engaged in a battle of good and evil, like their patrons - the Lord of Light and the Lord of Darkness.

Always shall the name of Gothar be cursed and spoken in terrified whispers and it is in dreams and hopes of all good folk that one day Leon the Wise will defeat Gothar the Accursed and release the world from his evil.

(yep, he retired after becoming a deity - no point in continuing after that when almost the entire party did not ascend also)

Sebastian Gayheart, Human Bard

Turned to stone in the Underdeep and left there for eternity by his cowardly party members.

R.I.P. Sebastian, gone but not forgotten.

This seems an appropriate place to list my dead PCs:

Vehement, NE Cleric of Nerull/1: Son of a minor noble and unwitting leader of a plan to overthrow a ruling family. Vehement's fate was sealed when he attempted to attack a good-aligned cleric of Bahamut. This forced a PvP conflict, and Vehement was disabled and arrested. To prevent his escape, Vehement was executed by his former party.

Tyrevolian, CN rogue/3: A wandering thief with little background provided, Tyrevolian made his first appearence by stealing from the party's fighter. Despite this, he would eventually become a valued member of the party, and would fall victim to BBEG #1s death touch attack. Despite his personality, Tyrevolian died a quick death.

Been a long time, but here are two fresh entries.

Duk Mi Fist. Human male. Exalted (VoP) 16th Monk, 2nd Weaponmaster.

Tyrseus Minotuar Male. Exalted (VoP) 7th Monk, 7th Paladin, 4th Fighter (before becoming monk/paladin)

After ending up in the Abyss thanks to Reality Maelstrom and surviving for 2 and a half days they managed to get hit with another reality maelstrom spell to which they fail their saves and then ended up on the 1st layer of Hell.

When in Hell, they ran into a few former enemies who the Monks had slain in battle, nevertheless, the Monks were challenged to a duel being sponsored by Bel with their "deceased" enemies. If they won the challenge, Bel would grant them passage home. The first duel was between a arbarian turned fighter that had been recently slain by one of the Monks names Tyrseus. Tyrseus again easily defeated him. The second duel was between the 2 Monks and a 25th level fighter Zhentarim General named "Thirym Bolligard" who had been slain by a friend of the Monks. Tyrseus told Bel that he thought its unfair for the Zhentarim Figter to face both him and Duk at once. Bel asked him if he was sure, to which Tyrseus answered he was--Duk was not sure. Bel then pointed to one of his Pit Fiend guards to team up with Thirym. The battle was a contest for a bit, then as the damage mounted, the Pit Fiend first hit Tyrseus with power word stun, and then he hit Duk with it, which spelled their doom.

most of my campaigns are either short or I am the DM, so I rarely have character deaths

but my first character died... tragically

We were 2nd level characters sent to recover an artifact. We also happened to find a replica of the artifact. However, we weren't the only ones after the artifact and they vastly overpowered us. They asked for the artifact or our lives (the DM planned for us to give the fake), but our party cleric was too stubborn and refused.

My lvl 2 char died to a seventh level spell (finger of death) - like I coulda made the save agaisnt that! :surrender

HERE LIES BALDING BALDIN
[OD&D] Lawful Human Male Magic User 1

The very first character I ever made. In the very first round of the very first D&D combat, in my first session, the thug thief 1 got lucky with a natural 20 and disarmed the cleric. The cleric's mace went flying. The DM rolled for the location of where it landed, and it just so happened to hit Baldin for 6 hp. He had 3 hp. This was when 0 hp was death. My DM let my second character start with full plate and a two handed sword.

Which leads me to:

HERE LIES Lord Nimaj
[AD&D 1e] Lawful Good Human Male Fighter 9
Slain by his finest student, Lord Ditzler, a paladin who fell from grace (due to that deed) and later became a 30th death knight.

R.I.P. Freakshow Carlos (Athach 5), who was torn limb from limb from limb when a ghost posessed the 8th level Druid's dire ape companion.
