| Megrim_Lord09-22-04, 09:07 PM | Ok, heres my situation. I'm planning on running a NE elf rogue/assassin in my DM's campaign. He's going to have a tone to him similat to that of Jon Irenicus (from Baldur's Gate 2, for the deprived few who haven't played it). Basically he is an incredibly intelligent, malevolent, power hungry, twisted evil bastard, except for one thing: A name I've tried a couple, but they all sound so corny or really overdone. I considered something like Cyrus (insert last name here), but it doesn't seem good enough. Can anyone think of a name that basically screams 'sick, twisted, evil bastard' without throwing in something thats corny or a dead giveaway like Blackdeath or Darkstorm or something odd like that? |
| Enalung09-22-04, 09:20 PM | I've got very little imagination when it comes to popping names like that so what I do is just tranform ordinairy everyday words. Add, remove and change letters, move them about... You will come to suprising results. I sugest Rionanda for a female or Rioden for a male. Take a work like new-york newbork? no newwork? no lewnork? were getting closer lework yes, that is fine lewok another fine option lewbok ... lewko ? latonia maybe satonia maybe saltonia I like it well, you get the point. You can see how much the original word has change in only about a dozen iterations. Sounds nothing like the first word and that what were searching for. |
| Megrim_Lord09-22-04, 09:48 PM | Hmm, Rioden... I like it, it has potential, but I'm not sure... I'll have to think.. |
| Perseus09-22-04, 10:06 PM | Twisted and evil?......Barney? Seriously though: First Name: Puck, Loki, Hades.....any of the classic mythology supervillians might work.... Last Name: Try using gray or black combined with some sort of natural feature (not anatomical) such as Blackthorne or whatever......just a thought... |
| PSchirf09-22-04, 10:23 PM | Elf... go Tolkien in flavor. Morngolfin (Dark Lore/Skill) |
| The_other09-22-04, 10:26 PM | Tilok or in elvish Solyl Vex or in elvish Baes Rack or in elvish Vas Kren or in elvish Cael Veelus or in elvish Baeler Githtar(Gith-tar) or in elvish Koras (blatantly stolen name) Galbatorax or in elvish Kalarysas |
| Marchen09-22-04, 11:31 PM | Haveus Fenthurin |
| SlaineFargallows09-22-04, 11:35 PM | Evil, eh? How about something like... John Tesh? *insert the sound of skin crawling here* |
| MarkB09-23-04, 11:41 AM | Start with a simple, two-word phrase that sums up your character quite directly. Something like "Vicious B*****d". Then start playing with it by way of disguise. Let's start by switching two letters in the first name. That gets us "civious". Interesting, not too Elvish, a little ungrammatical. Tidy it up and you could get "Sivius". Now for the surname. A little transposition gets you "dastrab", which retains the essence of the original but sounds awkward. Again, clear it up a bit, push it towards more of a fantasy-name feel... how about "d'Straab". Sivius d'Straab. Nobody else will be able to directly read its original form, but you'll know it every time you speak the name, and that will inform your playing of the character. Or do likewise with any such phrase you like - a little anagramising of familiar words can easily yield a decent name. |
| Megrim_Lord09-23-04, 03:02 PM | Really good suggestions so far, Its really got me thinking. I've been experimenting with a few combinations of what I've seen, and heres what I've got so far: Koras Blackthorne Sivius d'Straab Sorak Greybane Rioden Fenthurian They are all very cool, built from the bits and pieces of ideas you've all given me, and are exactly what I'm looking for, but which one is the coolest and best fitting? that is the question... I'll have to think... |
| Megrim_Lord09-23-04, 08:01 PM | after much thought, I have decided that the name shall be... Koras Blackthorne Thanks to everyone who chipped in and offered advice (and that goes for the few who posted on the optimization board as well) |
