Character Level Is.... [Archive] - Wizards Community

A) Class Levels

B) Hit Dice

C) Effective Character Level (ECL)

I was wondering which of the three it is, I can't quite find the EXACT meaning of the term.

07-15-04, 10:00 PM I'm not entirely sure. It's not ECL. Character level is probably HD + Class levels.

Could you tell me what you're in reference to? For example, you gain a feat every three, basically, HD you have. Though it might be referred to as character levels, I'm not sure.

HD = Hit Dice = The sum of class Hit-dice and racial Hit-dice
ECL = CL + Racial HD + LA

And I wasn't 100% sure if when they refer to character levels if they mean just add up racial HD and Class Levels, to find how high of a character you are for casting spells, or to add up your ECL.

I wants to assume that they also inculde racial HD and Class Levels. But again, not sure.

07-16-04, 07:12 AM Character Level is synonymous with Hit Die, whether they come from class or race.

Effective Character Level determines the amount of XP you earn from a given encounter, the amount you need to gain a new class level, and the suggested character wealth.

All other calculations using Character Level are based on Hit Die. Level Adjustment defines the difference between Character Level and Effective Character Level.

:teach:   CL=HD

:teach:   ECL=CL+LA

07-16-04, 07:18 AM The "levels" in Transition Classes are Level Adjustments. They have no Hit Die and thus don't count as Class Level, only towards your Effective Class Level.

The tables that say Minimum Character Level, mean Character Level, not Effective Character Level. In other words, your Hit Die.
