| MasterOfLight09-27-05, 07:29 PM | Hi All I'm new to the game (both as a DM and player), and am looking for a rule clarification. On page 58 of the Player's Handbook, it states that you may only level up one level per adventure. However, i've noticed that in The Sunless Citadel, it states that characters can reach level 3 by the end of the adventure... Does this mean that characters can actually level up more than once an adventure? Does this replace the statement in the Player's Handbook? It seems to make more sense! Thanks Master Of Light |

On page 58 of the Player's Handbook, it states that you may only level up one level per adventure. You're misreading a bit. What it says is that when you level up you can only go up one level - even if you have enough XP to go up more than one level. In such a case (which SHOULD be extremely rare) you can only advance to within 1 xp of the next level and any excess experience points are lost. Generally, the way it happens that a PC might advance more than one level at a time is because the DM is giving out an overly-large amount of experience at one time - such as by witholding all xp awards until the end of a single adventure. Really it's a rule that's intended just to encourage the DM to keep XP awards flowing regularly and advancing in levels at a regular pace, rather than holding back xp awards and then having PC's "skip" entire experience levels when they get a MASSIVE XP dump. However, i've noticed that in The Sunless Citadel, it states that characters can reach level 3 by the end of the adventure... Does this mean that characters can actually level up more than once an adventure? Absolutely. In fact, characters are ROUGHLY going to advance a level every 14 encounters or so. The game is designed that way. Now adventures are going to have a certain pattern of encounter strength that may or may not keep close to the 14-encounter-per-level "average" that's designed into the game, but most adventures are going to have 3 or even 4 times that many encounters so it's going to be VERY common for PC's to level up more than once during a single adventure - unless the DM is witholding handing out the XP awards much longer than he should. |
