I am looking for information for characters who wish to build or buy their own keeps, towers, castles, etc...

Does anyone know of any resources that I could utilize?

Thanks!

The Stronghold Builder's Guide, a 3.0 supplement, dealt with construction for PCs.

Recommended sources: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, maybe drivethrurpg (never go there myself, so I don't know, but I don't believe it's in .pdf legally yet), and most importantly, your FLGS.

You know, as a DM I've found the SBG to be more of a tool for divorcing players from their wealth than anything else. Since I try to follow the wealth/level guidelines, I've found it to be a bit unfair to players. Even the relatively high quotes in the DMG are kind by comparison. Work out something you think is fair by the power level of you own campaign. That'd be best IMHO.

Sounds like you've got greedy adventurer's Ut. ;)

I've never had a problem using it, and any PC interested in building something to be justly proud of is going to take the Landlord feat from the book, so gold isn't necessarily a big question -- patience is.

SBG is definitely worth picking up. However, like Ut-Napishtim I have found the prices quoted as seriously painful.

I appreciate the point made by SnowbearK: If they're greedy enough to want it, then they should pay for it. There is a definite logic there.

I have a few points to make though:

1, the book almost forces at least 1 PC to take the Landlord feat, (which does provide a serious amount of GP towards buildings).

2, when the book was written, I think they assumed every adventuring party would have access to certain spells that reduce the costs of building. Prime example is Wall of Stone. They shouldn't assume ANYTHING about an adventuring party.

3, WotC seemingly contradict themselves. OK I don't actually have my books with me at the moment, so bear with me. In SBG they run through the construction of 'Brightstone Keep' (?) which comes out at approximately 100KGP. (I'm guessing here at bit - no doubt there will be a gentle reader who can put me right). But the exact same map of a keep is available on the downloadable adventure on this site 'Base of Operations' Its a 5th level adventure, but no 5th level characters should gain booty (even in the shape of real estate) worth that much GP. So, either the adventure is too low EL, or the prices in SBG need sorting out. Most people I've spoken to think the SBG is too highly priced. Having a home base is very important to characters, players (and also to the DM. How can you wreck their base if you've been too tight to give them one in the first place :evillaugh )

Hope this helps, and I apologise in advance for the TOTALLY wrong figures in part the third.
