| locustechpriest06-30-07, 03:53 AM | If there is a creature (Beholder, for the sake of example) hovering 15ft. above the ground, and I am directly under it, can I make a charge attack by jumping straight up (DC 40)? You must move before your attack, not after. You must move at least 10 feet (2 squares) and may move up to double your speed directly toward the designated opponent. You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). Here’s what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. A Jump check is included in your movement, so it is part of a move action. I am, of course, assuming an non-reach weapon (otherwise the Beholder is 20ft. from the ground). If you can charge, could you also bullrush/overrun? |

In effect, this means (I'd argue), that, unless a creature has Perfect Maneuverability (in which case Up Speed is Full), it cannot charge upward because something "hinders" its movement. In other words, even though there isn't anything there, whatever it is in the game that prevents a character from flying upward at normal speed (probably gravity) is a hindrance and therefore hinders movement and therefore no charge. Take a 20ft run and a 10 on the check. 10(roll)+2(racial)+3(str)+9(ranks)+2(ath letic)+2(synergy)+2(enhancement on str)+10(enhancement) == 40 (a 10ft vertical with running start) That would totally make my day. |
| Millennium07-14-07, 07:56 PM | I think gravity counts as hindering your movement. I might make an exception for creatures with a fly speed and perfect maneuverability (since perfect maneuverability implies by definition that you have some means of countering gravity) but otherwise I don't think I'd allow charging straight up. |

This is mostly because I'm strongly influenced by Final Fantasy games, in which an entire character class is based around jumping... |
| locustechpriest07-15-07, 04:03 AM | Yay, opinions both ways! Well, I don't plan on doing it soon, but depending on how the DM rules, someone might have fun with this (expecially at level 6, lol). |
| YellowKing08-28-07, 10:58 PM | I would say no because 'charging' is a special form of 'movement' that requires a full action and you cannot then also make another movement consisting of jump. In addition, I would agree with the guys on gravity limiting your movement to half speed and therefore hampering your charge. This being said, there are epic level feats that allow this very thing although I cannot recall what they are called at this moment. |
| Salla08-29-07, 01:00 AM | I would allow it, presuming (of course) you can leap high enough to make the attack. |

| locustechpriest08-29-07, 01:21 PM | there are epic level feats that allow this very thing Hmm, sold. I am appeased. (I am also rather supprised that this topic came back to life, it looked dead for the longest time...) |
| Chardre08-31-07, 10:30 PM | personally, I'd only allow it with a character who has the "acrobatic charge" special ability. The acrobatic charge ability allows a character to charge over difficult terrain (making jump or tumble checks where aplicable). That suggests that you can't normally make jumps or tumbles during charge. Gravity probably would constitute as difficult terrain. |
