Is it possible to have situations where the party is fleeing a monster or monsters, through a structure, shutting doors behind them, leaping over pits, tumbling down stairs, running up stairs and such...

If you've experienced something similar, please post about it. :)

It's complicated. Our DM usually has everyone in the chase make Dex checks, if they have the same speed.

If one guy rolls poorly, that represents his tripping on objects in the way or thrown in the way and slowing down. If one guy rolls well, he's leaping over things and going faster than his pursuer or whatever he's pursuing.

There could be other checks for other things, because not everything should be covered in a Dex check.

I've had a few running battles in my time. The most recent was in the Eberron module "The Vampire's Blade" (I think it's called) where you chase the BBEG's stagecoach for a while. Also, you're on a running train battle. It was pretty sweet.

There was a really neat one in Dungeon Magazine #114, "Mad God's Key." The chase was set in the docks on the oceanfront, and the characters had to jump/climb from one boat to the next dealing with the guard dogs, piles of crates, loose fishing nets, and boats with bad bottoms.

Movement in D&D is pretty boring overall, so you need to add stuff to make it interesting. Give them obstacles to climb over, enemies to deal with while on the move, and opportunities to somehow slow down the enemy they are chasing/running from. Make it so the one doing the chasing is faster than the one running (so they can catch up), but is hindered by obstacles, either ones created by the one fleeing, or already-existing ones that he knows how to avoid.

Playing a game set in a port city. My druid is running across the deck of a boat, mad cultists in tow. One is firing from the crow's nest, harassing me to no end. I hit the mast with a Warp Wood spell, flinging him into the water. I leap over the mast, making a Balance Check to maintain my footing as I change direction and run down the mast, to the water. Many of the cultists trip over the mast and fall to the deck, their comrades falling over them. One, a cleric, is still chasing me. We square off at the end of the mast and I manage to hit him with a Chill Metal spell. His armor starts growing colder and colder. Finally, he figures to grapple me and we both tumble over into the water. Turns out the cultist in the crow's nest got tangled in a net and drowned. The cleric has me pinned, but I Wildshape into a turtle and manage to escape. Meanwhile, cleric boy is freezing his butt off and can't manage to get out of his platemail, so he slowly sinks to the bottom and I manage another great getaway. :)

If you would like a system to make your chase scenes more cinematic, there are two products out in PDF format from Adamant Entertainment. Hot Pursuit (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=4278&) has received many good reviews (though I don't own a copy) and the author recently added a second title, Hot Pursuit: On Foot (http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=4733&) which adds to the previous title and is specifically targeted at foot chases. They might be worth checking out.
