I wanted to create my personal army of constructs but they cost so blasted much to make. What are the cheapest constructs that one can make? So far I've found a Paper Golem out of a Dragon magazine that costs a mere 400gp. Know of any others? Thanks.

Homonculus. Cost 40 gp. But with that, you're better to start a ninja clan instead of an army!

I was going to mention the Budget Constructs article from Dragon, but I see you've found that already.

Honestly, that's probably about as good as you're going to get. In Eberron, the Warforged were created because House Cannith ran into the same problem you're having: constructs are just too expensive to make a whole army.

well, on the homonculus subject they seem to be more necromantic-ly flavored so I sort of not wanted to use them (although I will check again, as I recall flaming effigy looked pretty cool and was a homonculus)

Astral construct for a psion. 1 power point. :P

well, that's more of a summon monster spell (right?) than a straight out construct...it would be okay if, say, I could cast it multiple times in 1 round at low levels, but I don't think I can while still maintaining the cheap factor

Paper Golem. They're made out of origami fer crying out loud. :D

In theory, few very expensive (and powerful) constructs would be more powerful than many inexpensive (and weak) constructs.

and then you can rain fireballs and such down as well!

obrysii: I think you left out the article "a"...it looks like you're saying barely any powerful/expensive guys would be a match for a large number of cheap/weak guys

and expensive constructs don't seem too cost efficient, when I had the option before it seemed that a construct (on the expensive end) would not benefit me nearly as much as better magical equipment and I think that will generally be the case unless you already have "uber" stuff

A mage I had once owned a pair of rollerskates with animated wheels. He zoomed across the battlefield...:D

I think you would come to regret your decision. An army of cheap things with several dozen 3rd and 5th level casters would bring your platoon to a stand still. Lightning bolts to slow them, grease, soften earth. Then send in your rust monsters (CR 3) on the slowed golems. Hey the army wins and it never had to send in the main force. Now lets take the town.

Heck to see the error of your ways just look at the military. Do they just send in a battleship or an aircraft carrier. No. They send in a large group of ships supporting the larger one. What about the army do they just use tanks? No because tanks need infantry as support.

Homonculus is in the MM1 3.5 (under demon or devil). Not sure though.
Paper Golem (this I know for sure, I just used one) is here (http://paizo.com/store/magazines/dragon/issues/2006/341) :D

alec, if you can support that many casters in your army, you wouldnt need cheap constructs.

Learn from Rommel. Blitz with your massed big tanks, and send in infantry to hold the line behind them.

and of course, my own casters would be countering yours. We'd likely hold air superiority too, since we're not wasting as much energy supporting the ground forces.

No, I meant it as I typed it: Few (ie, one or two) strong will defeat many (ten?) weak.

Check out the Ironwyrm Golem. I suppose there could be treasure that would surpass it, but in sheer army-destroying goodness, little will surpass it.

It might help if they had spelled it correctly for you: Homunculus. With a "U".

Weren't there alternate homunuculi somewhere? A fast version, and something else?

Boguns, being made out of free stuff, would be even cheaper. Beget Bogun is in the spell compendium.

I agree, magic>constucts.

Learn from Rommel. Blitz with your massed big tanks, and send in infantry to hold the line behind them.

Nazi's Built very big, complex warmachines but not many of them.
Allies Built, smaller, cheap, easier to produce sherman tanks, and built alot of them.

Still want to take a few dozen Iron golems against my 200,000 man 1st level commoner army? :D

Air superiority is nice, but not truly capable of winning a war on it's own. See Battle of Britain, Korea, Vietnam, and to an extent afghanistan for examples. That is unless you wage unrestricted warfare (My favorite kind) where stupid things like the Geneva convention and the rules of war are tossed aside. (I pray for the day this happens).

of course i will. it will be an uncontestable route in my favor. most times your commoners wont be able to pierce DR. if you can afford to equip adamantine in high enough quantity to be a problem, you wont be using commoners in your army. and besides the brute strength, the breath weapon cloud from the golems will decimate your commoners. :)

Ill see that and raise you the wars in Iraq (either of em). this showed that air superiority alone can annihilate your enemies once attained. in a straight ground war the US would have been in trouble. (supierior tech dosent help when they have 10 times as many tanks)

The cost to make a dozen iron golems is 960,000 gp plus a bunch of xp. They cost twice as much to buy. With 960,000 I can afford the spells I mentioned and likely afford many many commoner troopers and the rust monsters and air support. All the other things you mention were not in your original assertion.

Heck my commoners could be equipped with 20 adamantine bolts each at a cost of 120 gp each. I could equip 500 of them for 60,000 gp or 1000 of them with 10 bolts each for the same price. With an average of 5% of them hitting each round (they need a 20) they will do an average of 275 hp/round with heavy crossbows. Compared to the golems 129 hp they will take out two golems/round at range. Since they need 20 to hit they can start shooting at the longest range possible. Your golems would be dead before they reached my 1st level wizards with their 1st level spells and wands of lightning bolts and before I would have to bring anything else to bear.

Ooops I forgot to add 50 gp each for the heavy crossbows so I need to add 50000 for that bringing my up to 110,000 for my golem killing crossbowmen. They can shoot up to 120*5=600 feet away which even running will take your golems 7 rounds to traverse. That assumes they are not even slowed with the lightning bolt wands (5625gp each for a 5d6 one since it only slows them the damage does not count).

Once your golems close they can only kill one commoner a round with their attacks and every 2-5 rounds they can breathe to kill a small crowd. But your golems will likely be long dead.

I could do this with a fraction of the money you spent. If you want to add in your air support and your wizards then you need to spend that much more money. Assuming I have access to similar funds I can match you one for one and still have money left over for more cool stuff because you spent a ton of it on those golems.

I dont have my books within a three hour drive of me right now, so dont flame me too hard, but there's a feat in the frcs that reduces the exp and gold cost of any craft feat you choose (craft construct in this case) by 1/4, and can be taken repeatadily i think. Magical artisin I think.

In MMII there's a construct that requires only a masterwork weapon and armor, Dread guard or doom guard or something. Using cheaper armor, weapons and/or shields will reduce it's effectiveness however. You could make an army of these bad boys from mw padded and mw clubs for dirt cheap. The strawman army!!!!!!!

Alacthemad, you assume that you were both expecting a golem army, had sufficent time to prepare, and could get the commeners to fight them. I mean those things are scary!!!

Yes I have made that assumption. Due to the expense and expertise required to make such creatures I imagine it would be hard to keep it a secret. The base material is 5000 pounds of iron that 60,000 pounds of iron for the 12 golems. That does not include the other rare items included in the description plus the level of the caster you need to make these plus the time plus what such a caster would charge you for xp. I could assume I spent 100,000 gold pieces on information gathering and still not spend as much as he did to make the dozen golems.

Even without knowing that it would not be a stretch to assume lighting bolt wands and that would keep the golems slowed. Since they move at 20 I could slow the golems repeatedly retreat with my army and then come back prepared.

My point was that he would invest a great deal of expense and effort in making these things and it takes only a small fraction of that to deal with it. I call it the warhammer syndrome. People in warhammer spend a lot of building points on huge monstrosities. The opponent usually targets them first and takes them out of the fight in a round or two. Now he has a significantly weaker army against a much larger one of similar power.

All I want to add : 300 Spartans.

EXACTLY! Man, someone brought it up first. In World War II, the difference was GUNS. Guns completely negate the one rule in D&D that will allow the high level golems to win any day of the week: Threatening. Sure, you could take archers against them, but they will shrug off pretty much all arrows. Magic, they are immune to most magic, and heck, you don't support a golem army with just anybody, you do it with your own spellcasters. So, the question is, can 1 large sized expensive construct completely own many smaller construsts gathered around it? The answer is hell yes.

Frankly, I say you build many different kinds of constructs for different jobs. I will list some of my favorites that should be in a single army (you should not make one single type of construct):

Raptor Effigy (As mounts) [Complete Arcane]
Iron Golem (of course... and don't mess with any of the others, like clay golem >_<) [Monster Manual]
Automatons (I don't know how much they cost, but at only 3 and 5HD, I can guess not much) [Monster Manual II]
Clockwork Horror (also small and looking relatively cheap to produce. These two look like good support units)
Nimblewright (expensive, but wow... you take him out onto the battlefield and wow! This guy will rape commoners) [Monster Manual II]
Runic Guardian (Every support caster should have one of these by their side at all times. These guys will keep them safe for sure) [Monster Manual II]
Cadaver Collector (These are some of the most intimidating creatures out there, by far. And my absolute favorite) [Monster Manual III]
Grisgol (These guys look like they'd be nasty, and a good change from the average golem) [Monster Manual III]
Slaughterstone Behemoth (This is your warmachine... one or two of these, and your enemy's walls will cumble, letting your smaller forces pour in) [Monster Manual III]
Spark Guardian (This should be the familiar of your wizards, and sent out to rain down electricity on enemies. It works great as a familiar) [Complete Warrior]

I wish i could give you more, especially a flying one, though I think the ironwyrm golem thing someone else mentioned would give you your air superiority.

This thread has plenty of costom golems

Also, try having animated objects that look like iron golems (lead, tin, copper covered by a thin iron plating) Just imagine the sight of a metal wave on the horizon  (I would assume some conscripts will soil themselves and run)

But that isn't the qualifier here... a "mount" is the point. You can't saddle up that many constructs. Though I have thought about making a motorcycle construct :P.
