Reincarnate, as the spell, will return you to life as a random humanoid in the prime of life. Kill yourself as you get old, have a trusted ally reincarnate you. Good as new (unless you end up a gnoll or something) What do you think? How could this not work?

While the RAW supports this, it is up to the individual DMs to let it fly. Keep in mind that Reincarnate is available only to Druids, who would probably look down on a character keeping their soul from following the natural cycle of things in such a manner. Who- or what-ever grants druid spells in the campaign may also see fit to say no to this, and refuse to grant the spell to the druid. In my own campaign the spirit world can be a dangerous place, so it is possible the soul gets hauled away before the spell has a chance to work.

I don't think I've ever played in a campaign or character long enough where this would become an issue. But, it does work and here's the only reason I would ever use it. If your running a game and have a BBEG you want to bring in to a new campaign taking place in another (future) era. Thanks for another nifty idea!

The Faq or the Sage have claimed that you reincarnate as a new creature in your old physical age category - young, middle-aged, whatever in as many years as approporiate for the target creature.

'Cause, you know, that was a rule-hole that just had to be shut. Can't have wizards abusing gate/wish/MD for thousands of years.

Nevrtheless, you can still reincarnate from young human to young elf, etc...

Well the death by advanced age is the #1 reason why spellusers become liches.

Not only could Druids use this method to potentially live forever, but by a strict reading of the rules, every time they get to Middle Age, Old, and Venerable stages of life they gain bonuses to their mental stats.

Middle Aged = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma
Old = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma
Venerable = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma

Suffer unnatural death (monster, suicide, whatever)
Reincarnate as youth

When you hit the age categories for the second time, you gain the bonuses all over again (and you don't take physical penalties with the right class abilities).

Middle Aged = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma
Old = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma
Venerable = +1 Intelligence, Wisdom, & Charisma

Did I miss something that prevents this?

Either level loss or an average+ DM. Take your pick. :)

not if you use the FR material.

the Renewal domain has it as a 4th lvl domain spell for clerics too.

What if a powerful wizard geased the druid or had a powerful lackey dominate him or use a suggestion spell? I had been thinking of a way that would ensure that the druid did it. Outside that he was an evil druid.

I haven't read anything about not being able to do this, Bloke. Was this Skippy boy himself? I say that unless I see it in print on the shelf of my local hobby shop that gnoll adept that has been troubling the PC's is much more than what he seems.

Not bad, I don't see a problem with it (If long life were really unbalancing, elves would have to have the rest of their stats crippled.) I would think more of a spell to allow not-so-nice wizards to suck the youth out of their victims and thus make themselves younger. More of a plot-device sort of spell, as PCs rarely actually get old. Not sure what level to put that at, though

Come to think of it, could you Reincarnate/ Wish/ whatever into a full outsider or some such? Because as far as I know, they don't die of old age, let alone grow old. Pit fiend wizard... scary.

Well, the idea came to me when I was considering why so many powerful wizards would want to become lichs. I would hate to be undead. And then I had a character die and a druid reincarnated him and the idea was born. You would lose a level every lifetime, but as long as you had the spell... I would never use for it for a PC, but I thought it had plot potential.

What about an orcish king who perished in battle and was reincarnated by his adepts or what have you and appearted as an elf. An orc that looked like an elf, scary.

Why not really? I have never understood the obsession with "you MUST die of old age!!!!" in 3.x.

Can you put up some of the details? That book hasn't been in the bookstore (or gamestore IIRC, but that is a haul to get to) for a while.

i'm not sure. do pit fiends have a soul? ;)

were they ever born?

if not.. then they can't be resurrected nor raised nor reincarnated.

Outsiders cannot be raised from the dead by anything short of Wish or Miracle. It's not that they don't have souls, more like they are souls.

I thought they were made of alignment-stuff. But yeah, I knew that they aren't a separated body/ soul unit. Sorry about any confusion that caused.

So if you wished yourself to be an outsider (non-native probably), would that be a way to avoid old age? Or if you researched a process sort of like that to become a lich?

Can you put up some of the details? That book hasn't been in the bookstore (or gamestore IIRC, but that is a haul to get to) for a while.Basically it's an 8th level spell that drains ability points from the target, each point drained lowers the caster's age by one week. There are other details, but I don't want to get slapped with a ToS fish by one of the mods. :D

Completely sucking the life out of your average person (11 in 3 stats, 10 in the other 3) you'd be able to lower your age by 63 weeks. Cast it once or twice a year with some homeless bums nobody will miss as your fodder and there's really no reason for lichdom, other than some cool abilities.

Yeah, sometimes it's fun being evil... :D

If you playing Eberron (and if not, your characters deserve a long painful death from old age), have them come back as a Warforged, who has no age catagories past middle age and no max age.

ok, now i'll have to say you miss something, something REAL important ;)

While you regain what you've lost in the PHYSICAL part (STR, DEX and CON) ; 'cause you know, you get a brand new body (but you don't re-reroll thoses stats, you keep your originals ones but without the racial modifier).

Your MIND don't get any younger (unless you want to regress and lose levels, and that would be a bad thing). So you keep the bonus to INT, WIS and CHA.

BUT (there is always a BUT) !!

While your body start aging from a young state, your mind continue to age from the same point you were before getting your new body.

So you could be a 150 years old human mind in a young kobolt body (what, maybe 15 years old ??). So from the first reincarnation you get, you must keep 2 separate age count : PHYSICAL and MENTAL age ;)

So you only get the mind bonus once and each body get the phisical penalities when it get to the right age.

No loophole please ! lol

Don't abuse the rules, not knowing is cool, but not looking for a answer is cheating ;)

Have fun !

I'll have to look around, but I vaguely remember a monster that spends its time hunting down individuals who try to cheat death by old age. If a character wants to attempt this in your world, just sic a few of these creatures on 'em. At the very least, it would be an adventure plot hook, which just happens to be the point of the game.

It's an Inevitable called the Marut, in the 3.5 edition Monster Manual IIRC.

I thought they were made of alignment-stuff. But yeah, I knew that they aren't a separated body/ soul unit. Sorry about any confusion that caused.

Depends on the outsider to a loose degree. The division between the raw stuff of alignment and soul tends to get blurry when you consider what Exemplar Outsiders are.

Exemplars:
LG: Archons
NG: Guardinals
CG: Eladrins
CN: Slaadi
N: Rilmani
LN: Modrons
LE: Baatezu (Ancient Baatorians too)
NE: Yugoloths (Baernaloths as well)
CE: Tanar'ri

Some of the exemplars are directly formed from mortal souls/petitioners. Archons, Baatezu, and Tanar'ri for example. Others, such as Yugoloths, are not created directly from mortal souls but are formed out of the raw stuff of their home plane(s). Their home planes are of course formed out of the raw stuff of mortal belief and mortal souls of the alignment that mirrors that plane.

So if you wished yourself to be an outsider (non-native probably), would that be a way to avoid old age? Or if you researched a process sort of like that to become a lich?

Wish isn't going to make you a full outsider, not under any decent DM at least. Easy way to become a full outsider is to be of one or another alignment that has a direct transition from petitioner to outsider, such as LG/Archons. But that process rather changes your aims/goals/worldview as well as most times removing your mortal memories as superfluous.

I recently a month and a half ago, between now and the last time I posted on this thread, bought the Book of Vile Darkness, and the Steal Life spell only reduces age if cast on a night where there is a full moon.

Not exactly on topic, but worth the post, Dungeon magazine had a Critical Threat article that I added to my campaign of Keershaz the Pit Fiend turned imp. I had this little booger (who was a Pit Fiend that was on the wrong side of an inter-devil conflict and therefore demoted in rank to imp and banished to the Material Plane) recently meet up with the party and had him say that he was banished for more than 75 years. So the consensus on this thread was that outsiders don't age, right? He's still good to go?

dont do it because the average dm and im asuming you have heard of inevitables but one of them prevents people from cheating death so the dm will chuck a handful of em at the party kill the party and if an inevitable kills you you cant come back so you have to roll up a new charecter or if he dosent two words soul grinder from forgotten realms i think correct me if im wrong please

Inevitables also go after people for refusing to obey the universal laws of punctuation I should hope. http://arcanofox.foxpaws.net/shemmymiffed.gif

*shrug* I wouldn't toss a Marut after someone unless they were blatant in evading death and then went on to still greatly affect the world around them. A lich who stayed to himself likely wouldn't have maruts coming after him, but a lich who ruled an empire and devoured thousands of souls to empower himself to stay youthful despite his undead state would certainly garner the attention of a marut or two.
