Hi, in one of my game, I planned to use an child NPC (10-12 years old), and I was wondering how should the stats be rolled, wich bonus it should get and finally, how will it became a lvl1 Figther? (Because you don't born with a Sword in hand, one day or another in you're life your a level 0, not even a Commoner)

Any idea about this? Can i find the answer in one of D&D books?

Thanks a lot!

Look up the rules for Apprentice level characters in the DMG. Instead of giving your child character 2 Apprentice leves (as a normal character would get), only give them one (Presumably 0-level Fighter).

As for stats, I would propose:
Small size
-1 competence penalty to attacks (to negate the +1 size bonus)
-2 Str (kids aren't as strong)
+2 Dex (but they are usually pretty slippery)
-2 Int (they haven't learned a great deal yet)
+2 Cha (whether we like it or not, kids are great at getting what they want)
Double skill points for their class, rather than the normal x4.

... with these adjustments disappearing at the time he or she reaches 1st level. (Don't forget to add the extra skill points at that time. Include the extra 2 points from the Int increase, because those would be counted for a 1st level character.)

10-11 is considered the average adult ability score.
6-7 is considered the average ability score for a child.

-4 to all stats sounds like a good place to start to me.

2 questions :)

In wich DMG did you find the apprentice class? (no sign of it in D&D DMG 3.5)

the other: When do you count that the NPC lose the -4 to all it's stats? How many skill pts and HP did he have?

He probably meant the DMG II. I don't have it, but that's my only guess.

apprentice classes were described 3.0, but dropped for 3.5. i think they were in the DMG but might have been in the PH

Ok, haven't played 3.0 jumped directly from AD&D to 3.5!

any other ideas? I like the Chaotic good Idea, but don't actually really understood is Skill thing. (1h30 AM here, mabe it don't help me!) Do the NPC get skill for being a child lvl 0, then get is normal Bonus Skill for becoming lvl 1 figther? (it would produce a Fighter with too many skills? Am I right?)

Since it's all the d20 system, I'll go with the d20Modern rules for children(newborn to 11) :

-3 Str
-1 Dex
-3 Con
-1 Int
-1 Wis
-1 Cha
1d4 HP + Con (minimum 1 of course)
No skill, feats, class and level.
Base attack bonus +0
Base saves +0
Speed 20ft

When turning 12 it become a young adult and can take a first level.

Of course this is for a human child, but still...

Edit: Or you can go with the Kender's stats! After all, they are the "Children of the world" :P

I think I'll go with Label Idea, juste one thing, I suppose the Child is a Small Humanoid, so it get the +1 AC +1 Attack, Right??

They told nothing about size and sizes bonus... but as they say that a child has no effective attacks and should be treated as non combattant, I think he does not have the +1 AC and +1 Attack. A child is CR 0 (so no xp for killing childrens :P)

I'm fairly certain that the rules are still there in the DMG 3.5... I'll look for it tonight.

What I meant about the skills is, I would grant them half of the skill points that they are due, and then grant the rest (including the extra points for upping their Int) when they reach 1st level. Normally, you do not get retroactive skill points when you up your Int score, but in the case, you would, in order to give you the same skill points as a normal 1st level character.

Of course, this is assuming that we're talking about a player character here. If you're talking about an NPC, then you need to clarify whether or not the character will actually do anything other than "be there." If not, there's not much point in statting them out... just assign a Dex and Con score so that you can determine AC (10 + Dex + 1 for size) and HP (probably 1 + Con) and try to keep them out of combat.
