| technochris8107-29-07, 11:50 AM | ok, it tells you the effects that aging (getting old) has on your stats in the PHB. but what if i wanted to play a ten year old boy? how would his stats be different than that of a normal, 20yr. old human? is there any official word on this? -chris |
| shadzar07-29-07, 11:58 AM | reverse the effects of aging. wisdom would be lowered as well probably com, int, and str. raise charisma maybe and dex. unless he is a bratty 10 yr old then lower charisma. |
| Manyfist07-29-07, 12:04 PM | Heres my guess: -2 Str, -2 Con, -2 Int, +2 Dex, +2 Cha One size smaller (Small-> Tiny, Medium->Small...etc.) Base land speed halved -1 LA. |
| Krusk07-29-07, 12:39 PM | There is no official word, but here is how i would do it. for humans Age 10-15 -2 to all stats. Age 7-9 -4 to physical stats -2 to mental Age 6 and under -6 to physical -4 to mental. Infant is -12 to physcal and -8 to mental. All scores have a minimum reduction to 1. None of these get a LA adjustment or reduction, as there is none for any other aging adjustments. These come from reversing the chart from the PHB on aging and then doubling the numbers. |
| Vharuck07-29-07, 01:40 PM | Kids may be cute, but they're not inherently more charismatic. In fact, their force of personality is less than an adult's. |
| Teh_username07-29-07, 02:44 PM | -1 LA. This thread really takes me back, man - makes me think about when I went through puberty. My voice changed, I grew body hair, and I forgot Organic Chemistry. Wait, what? |
| Samotep07-29-07, 03:36 PM | I would agree with most, except for the Con penalty. If anyone has tried keeping up with a child, you would be crazy to think that they are hardier than most adults. I don't know if I would give them a bonus to the ability score or simply give them a bonus to Con checks, but I would give them something. Boundless energy, and the ability to shrug off minor damage... (Have you ever seen a kid crying and then immediately stop and go back to playing? They are just trying to play you, man!) :D |

| lint trap07-29-07, 08:34 PM | Here's the "official" word from d20 Modern. Kids 12 and up are considered "adults," and can start advancing in classes as normal. Kids under 12 have -3 Str, -1 Dex, -3 Con, -1 Int, -1 Wis, -1 Cha. They have 1d4+Con hit points, +0 for BAB and all saves, and a speed of 20 ft. If you're creating a "heroic" kid under 12, I'd just keep the ability penalties and modified speed and use as normal for their class. |

You seem to have missed my point that, by your rules, children are inherently a level higher than adults - which includes better saves, more HP, higher skill caps, more spells, and everything else another level entails. Which makes no sense whatsoever, just like my example of knowing Organic Chemistry before going through puberty and then forgetting it, rather than learning it afterward*. * Or, to use D&D terms, putting another point in the Science skill after I gained a level in "College Student" and my skill cap went up. |

Actually, the way D&D handles it is that something with 1 level and an LA of -1 is treated as 1/2 CR. Like how you figure out the CRs of NPC classes. It may not be specifically stated, but it's done so often (goblins, NPC classes, etc) that it just makes sense. |

| Escef07-30-07, 02:24 AM | Actually, the way D&D handles it is that something with 1 level and an LA of -1 is treated as 1/2 CR. I have never seen this. For that matter, I have never seen a race with a negative LA. Source? wait. doesn't a normal 0-level char just have 1hp? are you saying a 0-level child would have more HP than a commoner adult? and since when does race affect HP, BAB, or saves anyway? i thought that's what classes were for. i'm confused. -chris There is no such thing as "0-level" in 3e/3.X. That being said, I'd probably give a "classless" child 1d3+Con modifier hit points, BAB and all saves at +0, and no skills. I'd probably also say bonuses to hide, AC, and attack based on size, as well as a speed penalty (for the same reason). There are no "official" D&D stats for children, but I have seen them in Star Wars d20, and others have also seen some in d20 Modern. If you don't like them that's fine, but they are still a good place to start. For the record, I do not think children should get bonuses to any ability score. Sometimes circumstance bonuses (or penalties) to certain rolls might come into play, e.g.: children can use smaller, weaker handholds when climbing, or some people just plain love (or hate) children. |

It may not be specifically stated, but it's done so often (goblins, NPC classes, etc) that it just makes sense. That would be for CR, given that there is no such thing as a "negative Level-Adjustment" in any official D&D product that I am aware of. And again, try using your head about this one. I know this is difficult for some of you on these boards*, but just try - does it actually make sense for children, who have gathered less life EXPERIENCE than adults, to be a full EXPERIENCE level higher than said adults? *especially you munchkin/optimization "thought-experiment" kiddies who specialize in finding rules technicalities that are only useful in being annoying, as no DM anywhere would ever actually allow them |
| Gentlemanic07-30-07, 04:02 AM | Well.. The D20 modern ajustments seem somewhat harsh, especially because being a child is only out there for the roleplayers (and it will probably give you enough trouble already). As with picking races there would need to be certain advantages to being a kid. This is off the top of my head. Being a child in DnD. With this 'ajustment I am referring to any child between the age of 6 and 13, children younger than 6 seem unplayable (and utterly useless), older can be treated like adults. Offcourse some races have different starting ages, but calculate this with them then, I might do this later myself... - A child is one size smaller than an adult of his race (with a minimum of small). They reach their race size on age 13. Children of smaller races receive a another +1 size bonus on AC to represent the fact that they have a small build. - The child receives a -2 penalty to STR and CON, a -1 Penalty on all mental stats. Children of small races receive an additional -2 penalty to strenght, to represent the fact that they are have a small build. These penalties are lost when the child hits the age of 10, they stack with racial penalties. - Children under the age of 10 receive no racial bonus feats and skill bonusses. Instead they gain a +2 on gather information checks (children can connect with people easily, and people are more offguard when talking to a child) and on constitution checks related to endurance. A child gets a +2 bonus on escape artist. They get a +2 bonus of disguise checks to pose as an adult member of any small race. As soon as they reach age 10 they lose all these bonusses, and trade them in for their race's bonusses. - Children under the age of 10 can take every class an adult could take, but they take penalties. Their starting hitpoints (after bonus) are halved. Their bab is one step lower than usual, to a minimum of the poor bab. Their saving throw bonusses are halved (and rounded down). These penalties are lost as soon as the child hits age 10. Special: A child with the apprentice feat (DMG 2), within 10 feet of his mentor doesn't suffer from any of these penalties (except for the hitpoint penalty), as long as the mentor is directing the child. Directing an apprentice takes a move action. The child must also be able to hear the mentor speak. - Special: Sorcerors usually start casting spells as soon as they hit puberty. When a young child is trained to be a sorceror by a mentor The maximum level of spells they can cast is psysical age -7. Thus a human, reaching adulthood at age 15, could cast first level spells at the age of 8. An gnome child, reaching adulthood at age 40 (40:15= 2.7), would be able to cast first level spells at age 22 (8x2.7= 21.6). Young sorcerors never receive a bonus for high charisma, untill they reach age 10. - Children the age of 10 do have the advantage over the older members of their adventuring class, as they started gaining experience really young. Thus, when becoming 10 years old, the child gains a +1 bonus to any ability score, representing years of training. They also receive a +1 morale bonus on all fear saves. Note: This special applies only to children who started adventuring on minimum age. Wow, it has become way longer and more complicated than I intended it to be. There are going to be many glutches and mistakes in this I'm sure. Still, what do your guys think? :D |
| Chaze07-30-07, 04:57 AM | kids = halflings ...end of story Unless they are halfing kids, then they are pixies that can't fly. Ok I'm an idiot. |
| Heros_Backpack08-02-07, 10:28 AM | A point buy method of child stats you might want to consider: A 5-y-o (human) child has a point buy of 11 and gains 2pts on his point buy for each year older he is until he reaches 12 and gains his adult stats. |
| Tuah08-02-07, 02:54 PM | I like to lower strength, intelligence, and wisdom, but raise constitution and charisma. However, don't count the raise in constitution for HP purpouses. |
| Aliquid08-02-07, 03:17 PM | Kids may be cute, but they're not inherently more charismatic. In fact, their force of personality is less than an adult's.Agreed. |
