This topic really caught fire on the Whitewolf forums. Give brief suggestions of creepy, weird, psychotic, or otherwise chilling scenes or scenarios. Some were more like ghost stories, but could be remodeled for your campaign. Some of the best from that forum:

1. You wake up one morning, and look out at the tree in your yard. In the pre-dawn light, it's difficult to tell exactly...but it looks like the tree is writing, pulsing. Just then, the truth is revealed: the tree is covered in hundreds of birds. They all fly away at once, cawing and cackling at you. The tree has been completely stripped of its bark.

2. One night, you come home and see a strange black cat sitting on your porch. All it does is coldly regard you, and if shooed away it comes back later. That night, you wake up to the sound of a ferocious battle outside your window. It sounds like a mountain lion battling a bear, but you can't see anything. The next morning, the yard is totally torn up except for a three foot radius around your porch. The cat is still there, a little banged up and scratched, but still sitting up tall. The next night, you again are awakened by a vicious fight, but still can't see anything. In the morning the cat is still sitting there, more injured than last time but still standing. This continues on for several more nights, with the cat becoming progressively more injured and tired every morning. One night, the fight is cut short. The next morning, the cat is dead.

3. You are walking down a street with lots of dogs on it. Suddenly, they all look up at you and start barking frantically. Once you get about halfway down the street, all the dogs fall silent, but still stare at you.

4. When you are looking in a mirror, there is a half second delay between when you move and when your reflection moves.

Heroes of Horror has a whole bunch of these ideas in it :D .

My personal favorite is the reflection one.

I get rather creeped out by the idea of my reflection acting as though it was waiting to see what I did first before mirroring the action.

Doors shut themselves behind you.

Animals look at you with a human-like emotion representing hate.

Your reflection in the mirror gives you a demonic smile, and the head dissapears when you don't look at it.

You wake up at night and your house feels like it's about to tip over, then you go outside to check and the lights are all on, but they look like candlelight. You go back in and they're all off.

This thread messes me up. It's great. It doesn't seem limited to strictly 'imagery' any more, since we've moved beyond the sense of sight, but it's still great.

You're sitting down to a meal. Everything seems normal; no movement, same smells you'd expect and all. The second you bite into your (inanimate, normal tasting) food, however, it gives a piercing scream of pain. Drop it back on your plate and it doesn't do anything at all, but with every bite and chew it emits a sound like nothing but an agonizing death.

Some reflection related ones...

- Your reflection refuses to look you in the eyes. When you try, your reflection seems to avert its gaze.
- Out of the corner of your eye, your reflection is always looking at you. When you turn to look, it appears normal.
- Whenever you look in a mirror, you see yourself, but with a vicious-looking neck wound; dried blood cakes the wound and the shirt beneath it, and your reflection's skin is pale.
- Drawing inspiration from The Ring, when you look in a mirror, your face is smudged or blurred out to the point that you're not recognizable.
- When you look in the mirror, you see one of your allies apparently sneaking up behind you, weapon drawn, looking murderous... but when you turn to look at your ally, he's still where he was before you looked in the mirror. A second glance at the mirror, and things are still normal.

Yeah, mirrors can be a lot of fun in a horror / suspense game.

A few years ago, I made a place that was the main city of an ancient magocratic empire. When they were at war, the enemy soldiers who surrendered were turned to stone and incorporated into their architecture. During times of peace, the same was done to criminals.

Despite being in ruins, any given building had anywhere from 50% to 90% of its architecture composed of petrified people (most often humans) in various positions to help support the rest of the architecture.

It was a fun place to describe, as I'm sure you can imagine.

While traveling somewhere, in passing you notice a twisted, gnarled looking old dead tree. You return home without incident. However late at night you can look out in the distance (hill tops or out in a field) and see the tree. In the morning it is never there. When you travel again, you seem to find that tree everywhere.

The endings are deliberately left vague. They are creepier that way :D.

1. This one is actually a Japanese folk tale. There was a little boy who loved to draw cats. One day, he found an abandoned building and got inside. Since he had nothing else to do, he whipped out his pencil and started drawing cats on everything. Big cats, small cats, sitting cats, running cats, pouncing cats. When he was done, he was very tired and fell asleep in a nearby cupboard. He awoke to the sounds of a terrible battle. It sounded like a horde of giant rats was fighting a pack of lions, with screams, howls, and roars. He was so scared he did not move until well after the sounds of battle had ended. He tentatively crept out, and saw that the room was totally trashed, but there were no bodies or anything. He ran out as fast as he could, but not before noticing that the mouth and claws of every cat he had drawn had blood spattered on them.

2. On day, you start noticing this wierd white cat everywhere (yes, I like cats). You never see him for more than a few seconds (He is sitting on the windowsil of a tall builidng and then darts inside, in the back window of a passing car, ETC), but the first thing you always notice about him is that he has bright blue, almost human eyes. One morning, you go outside. A dead man is lying on your lawn. His skin is incredibly pale. His eyes are bright blue.

3. One morning, you wake up with a dead mouse on your porch. The next morning, theres a dead bird. The next morning, it's a rat. Next morning, it's a cat.

Here's my personal favorite:

20. You are out camping in a somewhat remote campsite. You awaken in the early morning, just before the sun rises, and you decide to just sit and watch and listen to the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. The leaves rustle on the trees, and the water babbles in a stream just beyond your campsite. Off in the distance, you can hear a wolf howl. You hear a mockingbird sing in a tree nearby, and you hear a deer walking through the forest. You are taking in the splendor of it all, when the sounds of nature suddenly stop.

21. You are passing an old, abandoned house when you begin to hear the sound of a child crying. Despite the fact it is boarded up the sound seems to be coming from within the house. Breaking through the door you find the house in even more dire condition that the exterior suggests. Clearly no one has been here in many decades, yet still you hear a child crying somewhere within. Frantically you search around, but no sign of a child is found and the crying never seems to be any closer. Eventually you make your way to the attic. In the corner you notice movement, but still the crying is no louder. Cautiously, apprehensively you approach. Just as your eyes adjust to the gloom the crying suddenly ceases and you find yourself staring down at an ancient, dust covered rocking horse, coming to rest after rocking and with a single, dark stain that could only be dried blood.

I have found that my idea was actually thought of first by someone here (check it, interesting thread). I offer another.

Whenever you walk outside, the grass near you starts to yellow and die spontaneously. When you look at grassy areas you've passed near from a distance, you realize the dead patches of grass form images and text: faces of your friends and family in agony, scrabbled messages fortelling hideous events.

23. You're filling out a busy Saturday with the usual: dry cleaning, shopping, a haircut... but everywhere you go, people mention that you (or someone that looks like you) has been there first.
When you get home, there is a car identical to your own parked outside...
24. Every time you roll a die outside the view of others, it comes up 13. No one believes you.
25. When you wake up, your leg from the knee down is gone. The wound is perfectly healed, with no sign of a scar, and you slept peacefully throughout the night.
Everyone believes you have always been missing a leg, since the war.
26. You find a tunnel behind a plywood wall in your basement. It's dank, and it seems to go a long distance- and down.
27. No one recognizes you, or seems to know you at all. To everyone, even close friends and relatives, you are a stranger.
28. You wake up in clothes you didn't sleep in... and they are covered in blood and dirt.

You cautiously make your way up the towers winding staircase. Pausing for a moments rest you wander over to the landings window to guage the progress of you climb. Suddenly an object flashes inches from your face, accompanied with the brief shill scream of a woman falling to her death, which is abruptly replaced by the sound of impact, then nothing, save the pouring rain. Shaken, you peer out of the window, the scene below truely shocking. There is absolutely nothing there...

You turn to leave the dank dungeon cell when something glinting on the far wall catches your eye. As you get closer to investigate, you can hear a slight pattering noise, even though moments ago you are sure there was no such noise. Another small glimmering dot appears not far from the first, as the first irraticly decends the face of the wall. Finally reaching the far wall you're confronted with a eerie slight indeed. The wall by all appearances has blood seeping from between its stones...

You and your companions wake at dawn to a deafening silence. No sounds besides your own can be heard, suddenly a gasp escapes one of your companions lips as he points to the now cold camp-fire. From amongst the charred remains and ashes rises a distended, bloodied limb of a child, hand pointing skyward (or to one of the PCs)...

You look in the mirror and your eyesockets are hollow with no eyes.

You look in the mirror and tiny bugs are crawling all over your skin near any openings in your clothes. They're not there when you check, but they appear in the reflection again -- with one now crawling down your forehead. You might even think you start to feel it's tiny legs, but again nothing's there when you check.

At night, you're sitting on a grassy field when you hear someone utter your name from beneath the ground. A horrible wail then rises like a woman in agony. A few pockets of ground dip in slightly, and you run like the wind but the screaming only gets louder. Then all is silent, and your house looks menacing in the dark shadows.

You look in a mirror and your eyes are a different color. After shaking your head clear, the eye colors are normal, but you think you saw a momentary smirk on the corner of your mouth. Your eyes lock into your reflected face, daring it to betray any movement, then you feel a hand latch onto your wrist below.....from the mirror's direction.

Your cat enters the room staring at you, unflinchingly, and sits at your feet like that until you move. Then it crawls away, keeping its eyes on yours and moving sideways and backwards as it does so, never breaking eye contact as it practically slithers backwards down the hallway into the dark. Later, you awaken to the cat's face directly overhead lurking from the headboard with that wide stare boring into you.

Some of these are really cool. I'll also suggest Heros of Horror for some good ideas. I may have copied some of these without knowing it...

29) In the dark of night in the woods, you can hear the sound of children playing and laughing.

30) You see a single window boarded up on the top floor of a nice house. Everything else appears normal.

31) The beach of the lake is filled with dead fish, for no obvious reason.

32) Repeated Listen checks reveal occasional murmering and muttering behind you. If you look, you cannot find anything. No one else admits to hearing the noises...

Also, I figured I'd share this...

Last week, I did something using shadows and reflections to get at one of the PCs. Someone powerful wanted to assassinate him, in such a way as to not let him be ressurected. I statted the assassin up as a ghost (with the draining touch ability to drain Con on a touch attack). The only difference I added was he was attacked on three consecutive nights:

He saw a reflection of a hooded figure approaching, but no one was behind him. As he looked back at the reflection, the figure brandished a dagger and then killed his reflection. From that point on, he had no reflection. This represented a portion of his soul being killed.
The next night he saw a shadow on the floor approaching him. Again, the shadow drew a dagger and killed his shadow. From that point on, he had no shadow.
The third night, the ghost manifested, and tried to drain his Con. The way I had set it up, if he were killed, he would be dead forever. Since the party killed the ghost, he regained his reflection and shadow.

I know it's only half on topic, but I figured I'd share that because it was a lot of fun and I had the player really creeped out.

Throughout the course of your day, you keep finding various doll appendages in odd places (i.e. desk drawer, passenger seat of your car, the orange juice...).

At a large banquet, the main course is revealed to be a roast pig... crawling with maggots. None of the other guest seem to mind/notice and dig in greedily.

Half way down the basement steps, a throaty voice says, "Hello."

Whenever you come near to a source of heat such as a candle or a torch, it seems to suck the heat out of your body rather than provide you with warmth. Nobody else seems to notice anything strange.

Your reflection in the mirror does not mimic your actions; instead, it pounds on the mirror with its fists and apparently screams at the top of its lungs in abject horror, although it makes no audible sound.

An old drawing of a horrible creature seems to have moved a little bit every time you look at it. It appears to be getting closer and closer, as if trying to escape from the parchment that holds it.

The cold night wind seems to carry with it a warning: "Do not trust her", it whispers to you, "do not trust her".

You awake every night at midnight to the sound of claws scraping on the wooden floor in the darkness. When you attempt to investigate, you find nothing.

You wake up one morning to find yourself in a completely different world, where no one has any memory of the life you've been living. The next morning, you awake back in your old life. This pattern continues every other day, as the alternate life becomes more and more unbelievable - loved ones die horrific deaths, you suffer catastrophic wounds only to find them perfectly healed every other day, and terrifying creatures stalk you at every turn - but nobody from either world believes you.

You decide to spend the night at a tavern in a small country town. When you wake up, the town is utterly deserted and charred as if it suffered some great fire, but you and your companions are unharmed.

Whenever you look at your companion, you see the image of a werewolf devouring his guts and tearing into his flesh as he screams in agony. One week later, you awake tin the middle of the night to the same image - but this time, it's for real.

One day, you discover that nobody can see or hear you - in fact, you seem to be completely nonexistent to them. Instead, you see images of the dead everywhere, who beckon you to take their hands, join them, become one of them...

You walk or drive/ride down the road in your car/wagon/horse at night. As you approach the first streetlamp it suddenly goes out. As you approach the next one it goes out too. And then the next as you approach it. And the next. As you near the end of the street you are entering the last pool of streetlight - a circular patch of yellow comfort in the dark, black, cold night. You stop and stand looking back. Behind you, the street is darker than even the starlit, moonless sky above you. It is as if it is entirely cloaked in shadows cast by the blockage of lights that AREN'T there. The susurrant wind gently blows. Nearby there is the sound of something being knocked over...

Great one RobbyPants. That one will probably work best if the situation is triggered by the target looking into any mirror or reflective surface (like a pond, silverware, or an eye pupil). That way the timing doesn't seem a coincidence, and you don't have to wait until a mirror's available -- they could simply be inspecting their sword, or a looted flask :)

VrecknidjX, nice imagery.

(I also took some liberties, if you don't mind -- just added bits and pieces onto yours until coming up with the alternate storyline below)

*****************

You shudder, almost transfixed by the sight, but then chuckle nervously for being so overreactive. Ooo boy, what an imagination! You quickly put out the candle and search around. Usually no one would be home for another three hours, but obviously someone arrived early. You dial their cell just to be sure. One ring, then... silence. Not even the beep for a message. You retry, but again there's one ring and then nothing. Bathroom, ooo you gotta go. On the way you dial another family member, and..

(that's odd the bathroom door's never left open)

..push the door in. Your heart crawls into your throat. The toilet seat is down and there's a lit black candle on it. Just then a slow realization hits you. The house...it's been eerily silent all this while. Everything's deadly calm, and not even your phone is making a -- it had again only rung once, you realize. Its screen is displaying the last dialed number above "connected :04...:05...:06..." Gingerly you lift the phone again. "Hello?" Your voice echoes too loudly. No response. ":07...:08..." You snap it closed and hurry off towards the front of the house, the echo of footsteps bouncing everywhere, and more unsettling...as if from behind directly you.

(get a hold of yourself)

There's a slight breeze...from where? You didn't leave the front door open -- did you? Or maybe someone's home! Rounding the hallway, your mouth opens -- but emits no sound. The candle on the dining table is lit once again. Its pure blackness holds your attention entirely, black liquid ready to stream downward, and the candle flickers dreamlike in the... wind?

You race to the front door, overcoming the dread felt heavily in each limb with the safety offered by reaching it.

Despite the rising fear, or that your heart's moving like a fish out of water, and your neck hairs stiffening as if electrified, you just stand there -- yet what if someone is behind you...someone BAD? You want to look back, maybe the whole thing is a bad joke, but shouldn't you leave first and check later when safe? But then you hear the toilet flushing inside, and that seals the decision. Yanking the door open, you run to the steps that lead to the car and....

(*stop*)

There's no traffic... No sounds... No people... Not even a slight breeze... The neighbors' vehicles are parked as normal, and yours sits among them, idling quietly, with a lit black candle on its hood.

You are moving down a corridor with a torch to light your way, when suddenly the flames from the torch brighten and divest themselves from the torch itself. The flickering flames float upward toward the ceiling, flare momentarily, then suddenly die, leaving you in utter darkness.

You are following an individual who lights the way by candlelight. You begin to notice that as you follow him, flickering candle-like flames are joining your group, like a small parade. There is no source to the flames, and they easily flit out of reach if attempts are made to grapple them. After a short time, the flames suddenly freeze in place, then scatter and fade into nothingness.

As you are walking down a deserted alley, a small, eight-year old girl steps into view at the far end of the alley. Cradled in her arms is a black cat with glowing red slitted eyes. She giggles, and the cat leaps from her arms to the ground before her. She then places a single finger to her lips and makes a "shhhh" noise before fading from sight. The black cat lingers a moment longer, steadily gazing at you. Then, a moment later, it fades, the glowing eyes the last thing to disappear.

You turn out all the lights and settle into bed to sleep and fade into a dreamless slumber. After a few hours you stire and awake, opening your eyes. Before you is sat a black cat, dimly visible from the street lighting outside.. you recognise it as your own cat in your groggy half asleep state.. its eyes wide and staring at you. You close your eyes and fall back to sleep.. but as you fade from consciousness, crystal clear realisation hits you and brings you back to consciousness. The cat was run over and killed last month. You open your eyes, expecting it to have been a dream.

The cat is still sat there, staring at you.. or more accurately through you.. its eyes fixed some distance behind you. As you stare its eyes sinks in, corroding along with its face. You sit upright in terror.. it is long seconds before the apparition fades from view.. leaving you in a cold sweat.

Sadly, that one happened to me IRL. I saw my old cat in the manner i described.. it was terrifying. I thought it might fit in well here.

You awaken to the sound of a plow being driven down your street every morning. This continues all winter. Spring comes, and the snow melts, but every morning you hear that horrible scraping. One night, you get sick of it. You wait outside for the plow to get there, hiding on your porch.
You see the plow drive by, sparks flying, because there is no snow. No one is driving it.

Moving into your new house, things seem fine for the first few months, but you keep waking up every saturday morning to find out some items have moved around the house in the morning. Your keys might be in the kitchen, or your mobile phone has moved across the room.

One friday night you get tired of this and pretend to be asleep, while watching through slitted eyes over night.. after a few hours you feel like you're about to sleep, but a tinkle of your keys moving jars you awake and you sit up quickly, shining the flashlight you had in hand across the room to the sound. There floating in midair, holding your keys is a pair of disembodied hands.

You walk past your front door when you hear the muffled sound of weeping. As you strain your ears to discern the location of this sound it is coming from the door and a trickle of blood drips ceaselessly from the peephole. As you slowly and cautiously approach the door you place your eye before the hole only to see a red and swollen eye looking back at you and into your very soul. Shocked, you push yourself away from the door only to see that the blood is gone and the weeping has ceased. You nervously open the door and see nothing.

At an odd hour of the night your phone rings and you answer it. You say hello and after a few seconds a very hoarse voice says "Help me." As you take in the sudden shock of this request a seemingly normal voice asks for someone who you don't know. You reply that no one by that name lives here and the caller responds "Oh, I'm sorry to have disturbed your evening." The caller hangs up.*

* This one actually happened to me IRL. It was probably just a cruel prank call but part of me still wonders if someone was really trying to call for help. I considered using star 69 to find out who had made the call but I was too creeped out and largely in denial that anything could have happened and went back to sleep.

*One day, you get a letter in the mail, with a return address in a far away place. The letter inside reads "the centipede is waiting." Throughout the following week, you get more letters, reading increasingly bizzare messages about the centipede, like "the centipede can speak," or "the centipede hungers." Every time you get a letter, the return address is closer to your house.

*You are investigating an old, abandoned mansion. All throughout the house, you find more and more evidence that the previous owner was insane and into some seriously messed up stuff, like demon worship, ritual sacrifice, and all that. Also throughout, they can hear a very faint clicking noise that thet can't quite trace the exact location of.

Finally, you come to the basement. The clicking noise is loudest here. You cautiously push open the decrepit door. The room is dingy, old, damp, and moldy. Seated in the corner, facing you, is a fairly rotted corpse, a worn shawl draped about his shoulders. Six bullet holes, along with a long dried stain, adorn the wall behind him. Clutched in his hand is a revolver, pointing towards his mouth. His finger pulls the trigger every few seconds.

*You wake up one day and you realize you can't remember what your friend's face looks like. You recognize him instantly on sight, but five minutes after talking to him you forget again. The next morning, you can't remember your boss's face either. Again, you recognize him instantly when you see him, but as you lay in bed that night you simply cannot recall it. As the days go by, you find yourself forgetting more and more people's faces. Curiously, with each passing day, you start remembering more and more random things with increasingly perfect clarity, like the phone number of an ad on the side of a bus, or the exact wording of a headline on a newspaper you passed on the way to work.

This is partialy based on real events. There is this one girl I know who for the life of me I cannot recall her face. I can remember the general features of it and what she was wearing and everything, but the exact details simply fade from my mind later in the day. More annoying than creepy, but I have know her for several months, you would think something would stick in my mind.

With a gun aimed at whatever creature you're hunting, you look through the scope -- only to see the animal has a gun trained on you. But when you quick look above the scope, the animal is simple grazing or merrily ignorant of your presence. And it's pretty far away, so when you turn to leave, you're pretty surprised to hear rustling directly behind you...followed by a metallic click.

More funny than chilling perhaps (unless it would actually happen to you)

True story ;)

The PCs have managed to fight their way through the zombie-infested dungeon, felling many of the foul abominations. But on the way back out, none of the bodies are still there. Nothing could have moved or eaten them, and its not like they could have just gotten up and walked away...

Rushing to the sounds of a battle, you come upon a beautiful young girl and an armored warrior at her feat, obviously dead. The girl's eyes go wide as she focuses on something over your shoulder, shouting "its right behind you!" Spinning around, your eyes scan the darkness for any sign of the monster that attacked the girl and her former protector, ready to fight and even die to protect the innocent girl. But then, right beside your ear, comes the demure whisper of a mature woman, in a slightly mocking tone- "I told you it was right behind you..."

You are studying a painting while discussing the lives of the people in the picture. Upon mentioning one of the people's name, the person in the portrait turns their head, and is now staring at you disapprovingly...

Halfway through a conversation with a beautiful woman you just met, you realize that her hair and clothing are blowing in the opposite direction to the wind.

You're late for an important assembly in a hotel you've never been to before. The hotel is very lavish and even decadent in decor. You know that the assembly is to take place on the top floor and you take the elevator there. As soon as the elevator opens you step out to see no lush carpet; only a bare concrete floor. No designer wallpaper; only dingy brick with wooden lattices. No cozy light fixtures; only dim fluorescent light. The elevator has closed and there is only one way down the hall. After a few minutes of walking down the bare and dead silent corridor you come to a door. When you push it open you are welcomed by the sight and sounds of the assembly. Everything seems perfectly normal and when the assembly ends you see everyone leave through another exit that appears normal. When you turn to the door you took it's locked.

You take the subway to work every morning and follow a fairly straight and certain route. One morning the see an express train stop and you get on. You notice, however, that no one else gets on the train much less notices you enter. As the doors close you notice that the train's interior is filthy and falling apart. The chairs are warped and bent and the bars are rusted and feel rough and dirty. The train whips past several platforms without stopping but you don't recognize any of the stops. Each stop is progressively more univiting than the last with crowds of gaunt and decrepit people standing at the very edge of the platform. As the train passes you can see their faces flit by like pages in some kind of demented flipbook gorwing progressively grotesque. Finally, the train stops and you get off. This is the stop you started on and when you look at your watch you see that no time has passed.

I find some really chilling imagery in urban legends.

A classic:

You are travelling along in your carriage during a rainstorm and happen upon a young woman. You offer her a ride and she accepts. You travel for a few hours, but she seems distant and only answers questions with a word or two at most.

After taking her to her place of residence you carry on your way. The next day you realize she has left a personal article behind. Remembering where you dropped her off, you head back to return the item only to be greeted by an old woman. She insists she lives alone, and when you mention the young woman she says it sounds like her daughter who died many years ago.

You get a call on your cell phone. Oddly enough, the caller ID indicates that it's your cell number. When you answer it, out of curiosity, you hear a familiar voice sobbing.

You decide to board in an old married couple's house during your stay in town. As they show you around the house, you pass a strange room. The wall and floorboards are blackened; crumbled things resembling furniture litter the room. Afraid, but politely, you ask what happened to this room. With a warm and sincere smile, the couple tells you that it's their grandson's room and it's a bit messy. When you glance at the room again, in the corner, it looks like there's something in the burnt bed. It's covered in an ashen canvas, and it seems to be wheezing.

3. One morning, you wake up with a dead mouse on your porch. The next morning, theres a dead bird. The next morning, it's a rat. Next morning, it's a cat. That reminds me of the insane "zoophage", what's his name, in the book Dracula.

Renfield, I believe.

This one's probably more odd than anything else, I guess.

You wake up one morning and notice that the world seems normal except for one difference (for instance, everyone has become obese, everyone's gender has changed or that everyone has been turned into "monsters", etc), making you effectively unique. Strangely, no one seems to notice this and the day goes on with little incident, except for the fact that everyone seems to think you're going mad because of how you react to everything. The next morning, you wake up to see that everything is back to normal, and your companions seem relieved for some reason. When you ask, they explain that yesterday morning they found you'd changed (became obese, gender changed or turned into a "monster", etc.), and acted as if you'd always been that way for the entire day.

This could lead to an interesting quest as it begins to happen to your other companions and eventually you find ways to initiate this "switch" at will.

All the [young] children's books in the library now include the smiling characters hacking at each other, opening up their chests to expose their hearts, tearing off body parts, and so on. Nobody else seems to find it unusual; when you point it out to them, they just go "so?" as if you were pointing out that the books were illustrated or something like that.

There's a cloud of flies hovering around the food, but never touching it.

You notice something odd about your dog (cat, bird, pet). On a closer look, their fur (/feathers/scales/whatever) is now the colour of your hair. They try to tear out your hair, but otherwise act perfectly normal. The next day, their eyes look just like your own. They attack anything you try to read/examine/look at, but are otherwise normal. The next day you see them walking on their hind legs (in a "human" posture if the pet's bipedal). They try to trip you. This keeps going on. After a few days, what was your pet looks exactly like you, and tries to kill you. (Don't ask me how that would work in something; it was just the only other scary situation I could think of.)

Man I'm starting to get freaked already.

I forgot the name of the story, but this was in an english book we had not too long ago.

*You enter an out of the way inn for your stay in a hotel. A kindly old women greets you and points you to the adress book. You see that there is only one other guest, who seems to have been checked in for several years. After you take your things too your room, the women opens your door and invites you downstairs for tea.

As you sit in a comfortable chair by the fire, you notice a small dog curled up near the hearth. You reach down to pet it, but it is cold and hard. The old women remarks about how she knows taxidermy and points out another few stuffed animals you didnt notice before. As you talk, you ask about the other guest, and she cannot stop remarking about how beautiful he is. According to her, he is still in the room right above yours.

In the end, she poisoned him and stuffed his body, keeping it next to the previous guest's body in the room up stairs.

Freaky as hell for an 8th grade english story o_O

used for a campaign from The Walking Dead #26 i think(graphic novel): group goes into gated community, deserted, late winter, snow everywhere, need shelter/food etc. happy to have a much needed break to re-up and rest.
everyone is happy and safe to spend the night and abandoned homes once they realize everything is safe and sound.
next day, leader goes out to RV (or horses in this case) to note "spring is on the way/it's warming up" and "what a great day it is"; thaw is starting...snow begins to slough off/melt reavealing sign over gated community that reads, "all dead, don't go inside." they overslept due to immediate comfort of actual beds and food (got soft, lazy) and thaw shows them the danger...and begins to thaw out zombies too...guess what happens next.

While walking through town, a black mare comes clopping directly toward you. It is already saddled and geared up, and the horse is panting as if it has just come from a hard run. The horse pulls up directly to you, revealing that the saddle is covered in blood. The horse softly neighs in your direction, impatiently stamping the ground, as if it wants you to get on...

While taking you evening meal at the local tavern/inn, you glance out the window at the world outside. From outside, a beautiful red-haired girl waves at you. Before you can respond, the reflected image of a middle-aged man drops into view - apparently hanging himself from the nearby rafter. Your gaze instantly whirls to see there is noone hanging from the rafter. Looking back out the window, the girl is gone and no one claims to have seen her or know who she is. Worse, for the rest of your meal, the creaking of the table and chairs sounds like a swaying rope...

...And every day you wake up, you seem to look more and more like your pet did...after tripping you and causing you to fall down a flight of stairs, you find your legs broken only to the next day discover they are healed, but bent backwards and now you can only walk on all fours...and now you're losing your voice and your pet is beginning to practice speaking...
