Class and Prestige Class Abbreviations [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere before, but a search of the boards didn't turn up anything.

Is there a 'master list' of the abbreviations for all of the prestige classes and classes produced by WotC to date? If there is, where is it? If there isn't, shouldn't there be one? More often than not I am left wondering what a specific abbreviation is. This information *should* be in the prestige class info, but more often than not it's missing.

I agree that there should be a comprehensive, updated list somewhere. The only list I know of is at paizo.com, under the Dungeon submissions guidelines. It lists all the classes in the 3.0 PHB and DMG:

Abj = Abjurer
Adp = Adept
Arc = Arcane Archer
Ari = Aristocrat
Asn = Assassin
Bbn = Barbarian
Blk = Blackguard
Brd = Bard
Clr = Cleric
Cjr = Conjurer
Com = Commoner
Def = Dwarven Defender
Div = Diviner
Drd = Druid
Enc = Enchanter
Evo = Evoker
Exp = Expert
Ftr = Fighter
Ill = Illusionist
Lor = Loremaster
Mnk = Monk
Nec = Necromancer
Pal = Paladin
Rgr = Ranger
Rog = Rogue
Shd = Shadowdancer
Sor = Sorcerer
Tra = Transmuter
War = Warrior
Wiz = Wizard

Eldritch Knight then? Thaumaturgist? Horizon Walker? Hierophant? What about them?

Great! That's a wonderful start. Let's see if we can get a complete list.

This is from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. They actually mention the abbreviation in the 'requirements' section of the class, but I will include them here for the list.

Dev = Arcane Devotee
Acm = Archmage
Chm = Divine Champion
Dis = Divine Disciple
Skr = Divine Seeker
Gld = Guild Thief
Hrp = Harper Scout
Hth = Hathran (Witch of Rashemen)
Hie = Hierophant
Prp = Purple Dragon Knight
Red = Red Wizard
Rnc = Runecaster
Sha = Shadow Adept

Here's a list for the Complete Warrior. Again, no abbreviations are given, so the following are proposed (by me). If an official abbreviation exists somewhere, point it out and I'll update this list.

The trend seems to be to strip out the vowels from the first word or second word, or have the first three letters if they'd be instantly recognized, so I'll try and stick with that. Sticking to three letters is also hard, but that's not a hard rule...

Hex = Hexblade
Sam = Samurai
Swa = Swashbuckler (SwB?)
BeaW = Bear Warrior (Bea? BWa?)
BldS = Bladesinger (Bld? BSi?)
Cav = Cavalier
DrkH = Dark Hunter (Drk?)
DrkSt = Darkwood Stalker (DSt?)
Der = Dervish (Drv?)
Dkn = Drunken Master (DrM?)
EWM = Exotic Weapons Master (Exo?)
EoG = Eye of Gruumsh (Gru?)
Ber = Frenzied Berserker (FBr?)
GGS = Gnome Giant Slayer
Out = Halfling Outrider
Hur = Hulking Hurler
HotD = Hunter of the Dead
Inv = Invisible Blade (IBld?)
Jus = Justiciar
Ken = Kensai
Cha = Knight of the Chalice (KotC?)
Pro = Knight Protector (KPr?)
Thr = Master Thrower (MTh?)
MHa = Master of the Unseen Hand (Hand? Uns?)
MSpy = Mindspy (Mnd? MSp?)
NWa = Nature's Warrior (Nat?)
Occ = Occult Slayer (Ocs?)
Bow = Order of the Bow Initiate (OBI?)
Prp = Purple Dragon Knight (covered in FRCS)
RgM = Rage Mage
Rav = Ravager
Mau = Reaping Mauler (Reap? RpM?)
Ron = Ronin
Sps = Spellsword (SSw?)
SLo = Stonelord (Stl?)
Ttt = Tattoed Monk (TMnk? TtM?)
Tha = Thayan Knight (I think this is covered elsewhere, perhaps in Unapproachable East)
WCh = War Chanter
WSh = Warshaper

I note that WotC doesn't bother with abbreviations in recent listings. Maybe the list of prestige classes has grown too long to be easily summarized.

Paizo obviously hasn't updated that part of the guidelines to 3.5. I edited my previous post to reflect that - thanks SV.

There's also the Arcane Trickster, Archmage, Dragon Disciple, Duelist, Mystic Theurge and Red Wizard.

Maybe they've gotten overwhelmed with the proliferation of classes. It would be nice to hear something one way or the other though.

I like those better, but this is just my opinion, I haven't checked if there are any abbreviations for them. I think some of them may be in Trollbill's Dictionary, at the top of the page...

Trollbill's dictionary? Where is it, I don't see it at the top of the page.

If you are only doing 3.5 published PrC's, then ignore this.

I'd be careful with some of those. For example, you have Darkwood Stalker as DwS; the Deepwood Sniper has been around a lot longer than that one, and it has gone by DWS for over 2 years now. Also, the generally accepted abbriviation for Order of the Bow Initiate on the boards is OotBI, but you may be trying to keep them at 3 letters. If so, what you've got is fine.

From the book of Vile Darkness...

Cancer Mage = CMg
Demonologist = Dem
Diabolist = Dia
Disciple of Asmodeus = DAs
Disciple of Baalzebub = DBa
Disciple of Dispater = DDi
Disciple of Mammon = DMa
Disciple of Mephistopheles = DMe
Lifedrinker = LDr
Mortal Hunter = MHu
Soul Eater = SlE
Thrall of Demogorgon = ThD
Thrall of Graz'zt = ThG
Thrall of Juiblex = ThJ
Thrall of Orcus = ThO
Ur-priest = UrP
Vermin Lord = VrL
Warrior of Darkness = WaD

Sometimes I wonder at the proliferation of prestige classes. Choice is good, but do we really need so many?

From the Book of Exalted Deeds:

Anointed Knight = Akn
Apostle of Peace = ApP
Beloved of Valarian = BeV
Celestial Mystic = CeM
Champion of Gwynharwhyf = Gwy
Defender of Sealtiel = DeS
Emissary of Barachiel = EmB
Exalted Arcanist = ExA
Fist of Raziel = FiR
Initiate of Pistis Sophia = Pis
Lion of Talisid = LTa
Prophet of Erathaol = PrE
Risen Martyr = RiM
Sentinel of Bharrai = SBh
Skylord = SkL
Slayer of Domiel = SDo
Stalker of Kharash = SKh
Swanmay = SwM
Sword of Righteousness = SwR
Troubadour of Stars = TSt
Vassal of Bahamut = VaB
Wonderworker = Wnd

If I'm duplicating anything let me know.

(head hurts) Why not just hand all these lists over to that chap who mad the PrC compilation, with links to most of them, on this board, and ask him to sort them out?

I'm doing both 3.0 and 3.5, so thank you for pointing that out. I'll change Darkwood Stalker to DSt in the aforementioned entry. :)

I am trying to keep it to 3 letters but even restricting it to WotC-only prestige classes it may not be possible. Also, I would like to stick to 'official' abbrevs wherever possible, and if not possible to common usage. Personally I think OotBI makes more sense, so I'll list it as an alternative. :behold:

I want to create a useful list with abbreviations that are intuitive. Perhaps an impossible task, but I'm going to try. :cool:

I'm putting what I have into a spreadsheet right now, this way I can check for duplicates. Once everything's in it I'll post it to this thread and send an e-mail to the PrC guy ;)

Trollbill's Dictionary is, indeed at the top of the D&D General Board, here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46916).

So Darkwood Stalker was repeated? Hmmm... OK, no biggie... Can't remember every damn abbreviation now, can I?

So, I'm still missing the abbrevs from the following sourcebooks:

Magic of Faerun
Sword and Fist
Unapproachable East
Minature's Handbook
Unearched Arcana

I have MoF, MH, S&F and UnA, so I'll post those later, but I'm missing Unapproachable East. Can someone list the prestige classes in that sourcebook so I can create abbrevs from them, or can someone suggest abbrevs from that book?

Any other core rulebooks I'm missing?

Alas, I don't have the Dragonlance book. But if you (or anyone else) wants to have a crack at it, post it here and I'll add it to the master list (303 entries and counting). :)

Dragonlance

But what I have is the lion's share, so I'm going to post the list in a new thread and send an e-mail to WotC/Paizo guy responsible for the current official 'abbreviations'.
