Class-specific level names [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-21-05, 10:31 PM One day, long, long ago, I saw what I'm convinced was a 1st Ed DM screen that had something unique that interested me greatly: names of levels for each class. For instance (these are made up; I don't remember the actual names), a first-level wizard held the title "conjurer," a second-level "sorcerer," etc. Does anyone remember this? Could someone post the list or a scan of the relevant document somewhere?

10-22-05, 12:19 AM Who can forget the excitement when a fighter reached fourth level and gained the title "Hero"? And at eighth level, it became "Superhero"! I think the rules said that he could fly at that point, but it's been a long time.

10-22-05, 01:45 AM They were absolutely pointless, and made little sense besides. A 3rd level cleric is a priest, and at 7th level he's a lama? I didn't realize priests and lamas were part of the same hierarchy. A 5th level fighter is a swashbuckler, even when he's wielding a greataxe and wearing fullplate.

And that titles are assigned to specific class levels makes even less sense. :rolleyes:

I hope this helps. I left out the thief acrobat and there are probably a dozen more classes in various different dragon magazines. There is an alternate monk for 1e in the Oriental Adventures and the Dragon Article 'He's got a lot to kick about', both have different titles for the monk class. I also haven't included the bard class as it isn't a class that you can start off with.

10-22-05, 11:16 AM Always liked the monk titles. IIRC, another cool thing about monk progression was that the higher level titles were unique (ie - there could only be 1 Master of Winter). In order to claim the title and be eligible to level up, you had to defeat the current NPC (or maybe even PC) that held the title.

If you read what I wrote (and it's generally useful to read something before you comment on it), you'd see that I was referring to the problems with the titles themselves. Not all fighters would refer to themselves at swashbucklers, because swashbuckling refers to something specific. Likewise, a cleric may want to be an itinerant healer, and having the title of Patriarch or High Priest makes little sense.

Better to make up titles for PCs who enter organizations, rather than slap specific titles onto any PC, no matter how it's being played. That way you can make up titles that actually make sense in your own campaign.
