| Zyphus04-29-07, 10:31 PM | While many people do not like the idea of WotC keeping its licenses and beginning to move everything in house, I wanted to voice my support for it. I also want to know why, and am sure that that cannot be answered by anyone at the company right now. To help inspire conspiracy theories, I'll start with the obvious ones: 4th Edition is coming. (I doubt this one, as I still think before 2010 is premature, but I do look forward to it since we may not need 20 books for all the feats/PrCs the campaign may use now. Cleaning house rather than licensing everything out and then changing editions would be polite, and the right thing to do.) D&D will be sold to someone else. Or WotC will be sold from Hasbro. (This seems more likely, and it allows the 4th Edition to be entirely controlled by the one, new entity. Having all the licenses available makes D&D far more valuable.) Everything will move online. Things that reach a certain threshhold by users ordering downloads will become available as limited print editions, or will be printed after ordering - ideally the latter where you could custom order a book containing only the chapter you want. (In my dreams, but becoming more possible every year. Limited print editions will probably happen. I'm surprised there isn't a "Best of the D&D Website" yet.) I hope whatever does happen the boards and website are used to help promote and get user input to help playtest, create, and evaluate 4th edition. I noticed the 2nd to 3rd transition used a lot of my house rules (one xp table, max hit points at 1st level, ways to cast spells in leather armor) and many great things were added (feats, better way of doing skills) but allowing the users to suggest things help decide would be awesome (yes, there are possible legal problems, but that is what waivers and such things are for.) |
