Dave Noonan said: "I’m going to think about clear goals and rewards for DMs" Does this need to be part of the rules in D&D? or maybe just sage advise found in DMG3? I havent seen this discussed on the boards anywhere, so I want to raise these questions here. Perhaps articles could be written about the many different ways to play the game. We know that some players like the old style dungeon crawl, "kill things and take their stuff" and some prefer to play a story game in character "True Role-Playing" and now with the advent of DDM there is a competitive tactical boardgame style using the basic combat system of the game with miniatures. The goal of the DM seems clear to me. Facilitate a fun game for everyone. Rewards have been intangible but still very real. If we look at the idea of adding "in-game" rewards for the DM what would they be? |
| DIESCUMDIE04-18-06, 05:02 AM | There are alot of rules for players but very little for dms In some ways this gives dms lots of freedom, but in some ways it is what makes the job hard and unpopular. A few tables to speed things up would be a great help. Some sort of random geography generator. There is a strange assumption that the pc is active and monsters/npc's are only passive. In a recent game I had to; Make up a story (mixture of Kokoro, 8mm, and planet of the apes- without apes) Make up a land, with various locations and dungeons Make up the stats for umpteen monsters, find a way to challenge without merely rasing the cr and giving away xp for nothing Figure out various cr's for locations and monsters Set out guidelines to make combats fair and keep the party fair. (I pray to god nobody does anything smarter than me like scrye about or whatnot and invalidate the adventure) And the hardest part, be fair in all this and not give my monsters an advantage. Rules for this would make the whole thing alot easier To be honest it seems to me that d'n'd is half a rule book. The bit that says how to be a dm character is missing Because of this many dm's become domination freeks (I have my house rules for all this but thats another thread) |
