| Kelyme12-20-04, 03:39 PM | I have a couple of questions that I am sure a few experienced players here can answer. First off I have this one player in the campaign that I am in right now that trys to make his characters God, or at least have the power of one. That is great and all he just sort of besmirches the rules to his favor if anything threatens him though, and breaking rules really pisses me off. Anyway the technical question I have is about the character he is playing which is a Raksasha out of the Savage Species hand book, he is about level 7 or 8, and he just decided that since he has the spell like abilities of a sorceror that he should have a familiar. I said the spell like abilities only include exactly that. I am not sure if I am correct and would like conformation before I make a sceen since I could be wrong. Just tell me whether Raksashas get a familiar since they progress sort of as a sorceror. My other question is just where the feats Combat Brute, and Shook Troop are. Or what book they are in. |

My other question is just where the feats Combat Brute, and Shook Troop are. Or what book they are in. I believe those feats are in Complete Warrior. |
| LukiLoki12-20-04, 04:03 PM | Yeah, those are a new kind of feat introduced in CW called Tactical Feats. |
| Sulaco12-20-04, 04:29 PM | My other question is just where the feats Combat Brute, and Shook Troop are. Or what book they are in. If you don't even know where the feats came from how in the hell did a PC in your game get them? |
| Kelyme12-20-04, 08:18 PM | The two questions are completely unrelated. I want those feats since they were suggested to me, just didn't know where they came from...and I really appreciate the conformation because the damn bastard used the familiar he made to find out he is planning on being assassinated, so I am about rain down on him with the power of the rules. |
| salamander12-20-04, 08:51 PM | ... to find out he is planning on being assassinated... The familiar helped him realize he is going to attempt assisted suicide? :P |
| Kelyme12-20-04, 08:57 PM | No. ;) |
| Lord_Anthrax12-20-04, 09:41 PM | A few volleys of blessed crossbow bolts should sort him out nicely. |
| Kelyme12-20-04, 11:52 PM | Heh heh. Most definatly, but since I am in an evil campaign it will be hard to acquire them in a city of vampires. I will try once I get some gold though. |
| Sarig the Genie12-21-04, 06:11 AM | The MM is unclean on it, but it's clear on this; if a Rakshasa have one level of Sorcerer, he can summon a familiar as if he was 8th level, thus making the Rakshasa an exception among races with innate spellcasting. |
| SALDAR12-21-04, 10:19 AM | From the SRD under Rakshasa: “—Spells: A rakshasa character casts spells as a 7th-level sorcerer. If the character takes additional levels of sorcerer, these levels stack with the rakshasa’s base spellcasting ability for spells known, spells per day, and other effects dependent on caster level. A rakshasa character likewise uses the sum of its racial spellcasting levels and class levels to determine the abilities of its familiar.” The states specifically that if the character TAKES additional levels in the sorcerer class then the character could gain a familiar and his sorcerer levels and the 7 rakshasa levels would stack for the abilities. No levels in sorcerer no familiar. |
| Kelyme12-21-04, 12:07 PM | I just thought of another question I have. Raksashas in the Savage Species handbook have hit dice that increase for instance it says 1d8, then later on they get 2d8 and so on. Does this mean that all together on that level they should have rolled 2d8, or does that mean they get increased hit dice as they get to greater levels meaning that they add that much more hit dice to their hp each level. If the rules to this are in savage species give me a page number if you would. The only reason I wonder is because in the monster manual a full grown Raksasha has under 100 hp I think and my friend has well over a hundred being at level 7 of the Raksasha class. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast12-21-04, 12:35 PM | The HD listed in SS is the TOTAL HD your character should have, not what you roll for that level. So you are still only rolling 1d8 HD increase just as you would playing a normal character. |
| Kelyme12-21-04, 12:49 PM | But Raksashas class in Savage species has 1d8 next to level one and two, then 2d8 next to the next couple levels. So they either get less Hp then most or a lot more. I just need a page number that clears up which this is, from how they are described in the regular monster manual I would think the less hp but I don't know for sure. |
| Morwen12-21-04, 01:29 PM | But Raksashas class in Savage species has 1d8 next to level one and two, then 2d8 next to the next couple levels. So they either get less Hp then most or a lot more. I just need a page number that clears up which this is, from how they are described in the regular monster manual I would think the less hp but I don't know for sure. They get less hp. The HD column for the Savage progression is the total amount of hit dice the character has at each level. When the Rakshasa character is complete, it will be a 14th level character with 7d8 as its hit dice. Compare to how the MM says it has a +7 level adjustment. That, along, with its 7 HD, gives it an effective character level (or ECL) of 14. I'm pretty sure the ECL calculations are given somewhere in the beginning of the SS, and either the beginning of the end of the MM, but I don't have the exact page numbers. |
| Zherog12-21-04, 01:31 PM | If they have 1d8 next to first and second "level" and 2d8 next to third "level" that tells me that they do not get any hit points at second level. A rakshasa has 7 Outsider hit dice, and an LA of 7. So that tells me the progression that exists should be 14 levels (I'm not around my books). Therefore, it's not surprising they have "levels" with no hit die. edit: Morwen squeezed in just a little before me... |
| Kelyme12-21-04, 01:37 PM | Thanks. This is good. My friends God character is about to be ***** slapped with the rules. Thanks a lot that is all the questions I have at this moment. |
