Recent Casting Limit: As with arcane spells, at the time of preparation any spells cast within the previous 8 hours count against the number of spells that can be prepared.

Not 100% sure I am following the whole prey and get spells concept so I'll ask a few Qs.

If my Cleric has 5 spell slots, and has 5 spells "prepared", but it's time to pray again, must he unprepare and reprepare them?

If my Cleric has 5 spell slots, but recently cast "cure light wounds" during the last 8 hrs, and its now time to pray again, does he still get to prepare 5 spells, or only 4 because he cast CLW?

If so, why? I am missing the reason.

Also, incase that is the case, if I use Spontaneous Casting to switch 3 other random spells into 3 extra CLWs, does that mean I cannot prepare those spells as well during this time of praying?

Thanks!

If you have 5 spells readied, 8 hours pass, and you want new spells, yes, you'll have to pray.

If you've cast any of those 5 spells and want to get a new one, you'll have to pray.

However, if you go 8 hours, don't cast anything, and do not want to change the spells you have, then you don't have to pray.

I would argue that the cleric must/should pray anway weather or not if they need to prepare spells. how could you be a priest and not pray to your god once a day. but that is just my opinion and just for rp reasons

OK.

I have no issues making them pray, I guess when I first read the item in quote, it seemed as if it was saying that if 8 hrs had NOT passed between casting of the spell, the spell slot was unavailable.

For example:

I have 5 slots, I cast CLW and an hour later need to pray, I have then only 4 open slots.

Thanks for clearing it up.

No, you're correct Soulkeeper. That's what it's saying. Here's an example.

You go to bed at midnight. At 4am, you get up to go to the bathroom, and you stub your toe on the corner of the bed. It hurts like hell, and you think maybe you broke your toe, so you cast cure light wounds on that bad boy. You do your thing, get a drink of water, and go back to bed.

You wake up at 8am and dutifully begin praying to your deity. When prayers are done, you'll be able to refresh all of your spell slots, with the exception of 1 first level slot. That slot must remain open, because you've cast that spell within the last 8 hours.

This rule exists to prevent casters from getting "double" spells. Here's how that works:

prepare your spells, then don't cast any all day.
Go to bed, then wake up as normal
Just before praying for new spells, cast all your spells from the previous day. Of course, all of these spells are Buff spells that power up you and your party.
Now pray for new spells, and set out for the day with (essentially) a double alottment of spells for the day - one as a set of buffs, another as a set of whatever-the-heck-you-want.

So to prevent that, all casters have to abide by the recent (8 hours) casting limit.

Hope that helps...
