| Good02-24-07, 12:51 PM | If a creature has a climb speed of 30, does that mean a climb check isn't necessary? (Same for run and flight speed). |
| Mageknight02-24-07, 12:59 PM | A creature with a climb speed can take 10 on its Climb checks. The same goes for creatures with swim speeds and Swim checks. There are no checks involved with running or flying, so those wouldn't be necessary. |
| StevenO02-24-07, 06:05 PM | Having a Climb or Swim speed listed allows you to take 10 anytime such a skill check would be called for. They also allow you to use that movement form at the listed speed. I think the full description of these movement types may be in the Monster Manual and may grant a check bonus which often combines with take 10 to make checks unnecessary. |
| JoAT02-24-07, 06:17 PM | They provide a racial bonus of +8, so by default, 18 is the automatic result, not counting any ranks in climb, or other bonuses. See the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#movementModes) for more details. |
| Nom02-25-07, 04:06 AM | If a creature has a climb speed of 30, does that mean a climb check isn't necessary? (Same for run and flight speed). This is all covered on MM pp 311-312. For example, a creature with a climb speed must make a Climb check to climb any wall or slope with a DC of more than 0, but may always choose to take 10 to do so. They can make accelerated climbing checks at only -5 (allowing them to move at either double climb speed or their base land speed, whichever is less), and retain Dex to AC when attacked. Plus it gets the aforementioned +8 racial bonus. |
