One of my players just had his character climb out of a pit trap. There are enemies waiting for him at the top. Is he prone when they attack?

No. But they get an attack of opportunity as he leaves the top square of the pit and enters the floor area. (Thinking in 3-D).

He should be treated as Prone and have AoO made against him as he moves through each of the threatened spaces on the way up.

Meaning if they have a 15' reach, they should get 2 attacks on him before he's standing toe to toe to them.

Also, he may not be able to gain access to an open space (assuming enemies occupy the space at the top of the ladder) without a tumble check... more than likely with a minus.

It's a really tough spot to be in.

I don't know if I would go so far as to call him prone. The attackers would definitely get the "on higher ground bonus." The table in the combat section says you are flat-footed while climbing (the climb skill does not say this).

I'm reasoning that someone climbing out of a hole does have some cover so that more or less negates the advantage of having the defender prone. Also it would be awkward to hit someone and not risk falling in yourself.

I think +1 to hit vs. flat-footed, no shield, provoking AoOs, and possibly falling is bad enough. I might give them a -2 to AC same as kneeling.

have AoO made against him as he moves through each of the threatened spaces on the way up.Normally, you can only provoke once for a move regardless of the number of squares you move through.

I am talking about as he is flopping out. Keep in mind that he isn't climbing a slope, he is climbing up at a 90 degree angle. The pit also flattens straight out.

And despite the crappiness of the illustration, it was quite difficult to do with this stupid html coding.

I would make him flat-footed while climing (no dex mod to AC), but I wouldn't grant any cover to the climber unless the footing at the top was questionable.

Also, the climber would definitely incur AoO when he climbs/rolls/flops onto the surface.

Naturally, I would impose penalties on any attempt to bull-rush out of the pit :D
