| Raelifin06-20-05, 11:24 PM | Hi, I'm creating a custom fighter type class and one of the features I plant to include is the education/training the character received. So far I have: Military: You learned to fight as part of a militia, army or the like. You excel in discipline, teamwork and coordination. Streets: You learned how to fight as a part of staying alive. In dark allies and seedy taverns there is always threat of an attack. You excel in not being caught unaware and using whatever is necessary to win. Disciple: You were either the student of a master warrior or trained under experienced teachers at a private institution. You excel at difficult combat techniques and mastery of ones self. Self Taught: You or you and several novices learned the art of combat through experimentation and practice. Your methods may be crude but you hold an edge in unexpected ways. Can anyone think of others? |
| Super Guy06-21-05, 01:55 AM | Though it is a good idea and one you can certainly work with, remember that the Fighter feats sort of are based on what history you are looking at. If you want: Military: Mounted Combat, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Ride-by Attack, Iron Will Street: Alertness, Dirty Fighting, Throw Anything, Improved Unarmed Strike Disciple: Weapon Focus/Specialization, Dodge, Mobility, Expertise, Whirl Wind Attack, Spring Attack Self-Taught: Exotic Weapon Proficiency?, Power Attack?, Improved Bull Rush?, really the options here depend on HOW you taught yourselves. My take on it was that it was gutsy and raw (combining stuff like bull rush with normal combat, using a unique weapon, striking more powerfully than most people would, etc...) |
| Dyrtt06-21-05, 02:04 AM | Sounds like a good idea. How about this: Natural: You are naturally tough, naturally quick and tacticly inteligent. Brute strength and Grappling techniques are a forte. Might be too close to 'self tought' I guess but I just thought I'd throw it out there. |
| Board_Rider06-21-05, 12:12 PM | If you look on the Classes and PrCs board there are numerous amounts of fighter variants. It will take some digging but it may help you. |
| J Milburn06-21-05, 04:54 PM | Hmm, I understand your thinking, but remember that the current fighter is so versatile with such a range of bonus feats that any feeling mentioned above can easily be reached. |
| simen_8806-21-05, 07:56 PM | By necessity: You have been living in a war zone, made enemies or in other ways been dependent on fighting prowess to survive in a dangerous environment. You have focused on defensive tactics and getting away. Feats: Expertise, Toughness, Two Weapon Defense, Improved TWD, Die-Hard. Maybe Discple should involve EWP as well? |
| Raelifin06-22-05, 12:24 PM | Thanks for the replies, I plan on making the crunch aspect of this a little more than feats but that's not what I want to focus on in this thread. I like the idea of necessity. Similar to streets but with more of a defensive edge and not necessarily urban. Natural seems a bit strange since no matter what body type you are you still need lots of practise to get good at combat. |
| Kain Dragoth06-22-05, 12:31 PM | Thats a good idea, but maybe make some more varients like the others said, see my favorite class is fighter and its really easy to attain any of those. |

I'll say once again that although the feat options are nice. Education style will NOT give a feat list. (Although its tempting with the feats presented.) |
| wordserpent06-22-05, 01:00 PM | Some other backgrounds might be: -Gladiator -Nautical Fighter (pirate, marine or even viking) -You could even be a scholarly figher who uses a fighting style based on mathematical and scientific principles like, Geometry and physics. -Amazon (if female) |
| simen_8806-22-05, 04:11 PM | -You could even be a scholarly figher who uses a fighting style based on mathematical and scientific principles like, Geometry and physics. Am I the only one who imagines a tiny lad trying to hurl a shotput? |
| Raelifin06-22-05, 04:32 PM | Some other backgrounds might be: -Gladiator -Nautical Fighter (pirate, marine or even viking) -You could even be a scholarly figher who uses a fighting style based on mathematical and scientific principles like, Geometry and physics. -Amazon (if female) Gladiator is an occupation not a way of learning. Nautical Fighter would probably be millitary. For some reason I have an image of Jason Fox (Foxtrot) playing football when I read your third idea. :D Amazon would most likely be either millitary or be a Savage (A barbarian-like class in my homebrew) depending on the society. Please don't get descouraged, I am naturally critical. Thanks for the ideas! I might use Nautical Fighter. |
| simen_8806-22-05, 04:58 PM | Actually, gladiators had a strict training regime with many well-developed styles. It most definitely is a form of training. |
| Raelifin06-22-05, 07:33 PM | Actually, gladiators had a strict training regime with many well-developed styles. It most definitely is a form of training. I could see gladiators having a fighting style but not have a unique training regemen. This page: http://depthome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/classics/gladiatr/gladiatr.htm sheds some light on the issue. His life became a model of military discipline and through courageous behavior he was also now capable of achieving honor similar to that enjoyed by Roman soldiers on the battlefield. I think that smells deeply of the millitary training path. Possible exceptions are: Gladiators were usually recruited from criminals... Which could indicate self-taught or streets. |
