Just wondering if anyone has bought, or recommended for someone to buy, "D&D for Dummies", and what they thought of it. It's obviously written for newcomers to the game, or those of us who have lapsed :embarrass.

I haven't seen it yet but I'm having trouble kind of seeing the point - the rules, as least on the player side, for D&D 3.5 really aren't that complicated to begin with...

It's kind of funny, and kind of silly . . . there are bits of good advice in it, but you have to hunt to find them - and know them when they show up.

Honestly, most of the book is just common sense, and if you have much of any experience with the game you probably won't find it that useful.

Welcome to the boards. This must be your first time here.

I'm not certain what threads your going to, but pretty much the only thing I do see are requests for rules clarifications and arguments about...well, pretty much every rule in the book.

I have played on average 3 times a week for 25 years. I just bought D&D4D because I'm tired of having to stop and explain every new concept to the new players or, even worse, have them not ask, get confused, and quit playing. (New players from old versions are the worst, though. "Back in 1st Ed we did this..." *stabbity stabbity stabbity*) My Monday night game has 2 D&D virgins and a 1st Ed vet playing in it. By allowing them to read pertainant sections from D&D4D before play, they understand better what's happening as it happens. And the flow of the game isn't screwed up. I liked reading it, although I admit I skimmed through most of it because it was stuff I already knew. There's some fresh ideas here and there. I would, however, STRONGLY recommend it to a first time DM or someone who has never played with 3rd Ed rules.

I've been gaming for many years now and I bought the book for a few reasons:

1) I thought it would be a nice little thing to have
2) It introduces new players to the rules while explaining what's happening.
3) It is nice to give to an experienced gamer who has lost his way to remind him that he can keep things simple.

The book is a fun read, but if you have a DM or other players who are excellent teachers, it may not be necessary.

A smart player is the one that all DMs fear. :D

Actually been here a while, just don't post that often.
Yes, my gaming group does ask for rules clarifications now and then, but most of those are clarified either by re-reading the rules in the PHB, or through a DM ruling. If it's a for something that's not brought up in the PHB I'm figuring it's probably not going to be in the Dummies book either :/
