i wounder if any of you guys have delt with this type of thing, ive only been playing now for something like 6 years and have hit it in every group...even if enough people call out to make the dnd group weak "in game" us as players could always just hang out

What's "minor" to you might not be "minor" to them. In fact, D&D might be a "minor thing" that sometimes gets in the way of other things they'd rather do. I like gaming a lot, but it's still a hobby. It's something I do for fun. If something else comes up that sounds like more fun, I'll do that instead.

A gaming group is a bunch of people who play a game together. People you just hang out with are friends. Oftentimes those categories overlap, but just because I play a game with you doesn't automatically obligate me to hang out with you if the game gets canceled.

One thing that might help would be to try get your group to think of it as "gaming night", rather than "get together and play our characters in Bob's long-term D&D campaign night". While you may indeed have a long-term campaign running and play that most of the time, you might have nights when not enough people show up to participate in it. At those times, you might run a one-shot (possibly in less rules-intensive system; character creation in D&D takes a long damned time, making it pretty hard to run pick-up games with it) or play DDM or a card game or something.
