Complete Warrior/ Divine [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-26-04, 03:13 PM I'm trying to get my head around a few of the "Oriental" classes in these books. My goal is to see which classes are better for a campaign that I am preparing to run.

The Complete Warrior has a version of the Samurai as does the OA book. Which is better for ease in 3.5 rules? Which has more favor and story options?

The same holds for the Shukenja class in the Complete Divine.

Do your players favor one set of classes more than the other?

Has anyone used both?

07-26-04, 03:40 PM The complete books are supposed to be revised for 3.5, for anything that appears in both a complete book and a 3.0 book, you should probably look to the complete book as being the 3.5 version.

I say 'should' because I am still waiting for the errata.

07-26-04, 03:52 PM From what I have seen the classes are completely different fromthe original. They have nothing in common except the name. It's as if the designer that a different agenda.

Anyone else?

07-26-04, 05:11 PM It depends on the class - the Samurai in Complete Warrior has pretty much nothing to do with the one in Oriental Adventures - you could even use the two in the same game, by giveing one a diffrent name, and no-one would think they were related. Additionally, the OA samurai, being basicly an up-graded fighter with less feats and a bonus Ancestreal Relic feat, is perfectly usable in 3.5. This is how most of the CW Oriental classes go.

In the Complete Divine, however, they're really updates. The Shujenja (gods I hope I spelled that correctly) and the Void Disciple are basicly the same thing as in OA, just upgraded to 3.5.

07-26-04, 07:15 PM The Complete Warrior Samurai is a "Westernized" version (as stated by one of the authors, not 100% where it was said, though) and is 3.5.

The Samurai in Oriental Adventures is a 3.0 class. That said, Dragon #318 updated that version of the Samurai (a barely noticeable change, though) to the 3.5 revision.

07-26-04, 08:00 PM I think the Samurai presented in the CW is boring and not close to what a historical samurai is. The OA version, while somewhat bland, is a solid class. I would use the OA one myself. The Shugenja in CD is almost identical to the one in OA if I remember correctly.

In 2.0 many of the "Complete" books left alot to be desired.

Do your characters fight more, or are they more of a divine spellcasting type? Because if you rarely play a cleric, Complete Warrior is far superior to Complete Divine. And vise versa.

07-31-04, 02:13 AM I'd pick complete warrior over complete divine any day, even with the dissapointing Samuria and Swashbuckler classes. As for quality, it's not bad - the 2.0 complete series had some good stuff (Complete Bard comes to mind), and the Complete Warrior is slightly better than that, in my opinon, so whatever that means to you. One thing you will find is that CW has stuff for just about everyone - wizards, rogues and fighters to have classes and feats presented, but CD has stuff which is pretty much cleric focused, with a couple things for Druids and Paladins, a very few things for Rangers, and next to nothing for anyone else.
