Alright the PC's are descending a fissure that is about 100ft for every 1/4 mile.
The terrain is counted as trackless mountain reducing movement to 1/2.
It's a total of 10 miles.

How long will this take the PC's?

100 x 4 = 400 (Distance of ft in a Mile
400 x 10 = 4000 (Total ft in the descent)
4000 / 15 = 267 (How many rounds it takes - Total ft / movement)
267 x 6 = 1602 (6 seconds in a round)
1602 / 60 = 26.7 (Round to 27, number of minutes to travel the distance)

Does this sound right to anyone?

Okay I think I was way off base.

I found a conversion tool online and 10 miles is 52800 ft.

52800 / 15 = 3520 (Total feet / feet per round = # of rounds)
3520 * 6 = 21120 (# of rounds x seconds per round = # of seconds)
21120 / 60 = 352 (# of seconds / seconds per minute = # of minutes)
352 / 60 = 5.86 (# of minutes / Minutes per hour = # of hours)

So the entire journey, if uninterupted would take 5 hours 51 minutes.

Now is my math correct?

This is kind of important since there is a 10% per hour of receiving an encounter.

Yeah, that one seems right.

Okay, so for simplicity's sake I'm going to say it takes 6 hours, will take about 6 hours. Meaning that the chance of them meeting an encounter are pretty damned good.

Thanks,

the chance of them meeting an encounter are pretty damned good.Depends. Is it 10% cumulative or is it a flat 10% rolled each hour.

If the former, then yes. Chances are pretty darned good.
If the latter, the chances are 10%, each and every hour. Not so good.

Try this:

A person with a 30ft movement rate can manage 3 miles per hour for casual walking.
A person in heavy armor (or a dwarf) can manage 2 miles per hour.

Over your rough terrain, that's 1.5 mph or 1mph, since presumably if any party members are slow, the rest will not leave them behind.

So, the 10 mile descent could be taking them up to 10 hours.

And note, not only would this have a high chance of encounters, it would require the PCs to make a forced march for 2 hours or camp overnight near the bottom of the trench.
