| Ashok_Lal11-06-06, 06:51 PM | I was reading up on concentration rolls & now i'm not sure we've been playing it right. We've been playing that any damage my Wizard has taken that round is the DC+10 concentration roll. Now if i read it right last nite, the only damage that requires a concentration roll os from AoO. Is this right?? |
| LukiLoki11-06-06, 07:15 PM | Well, damage sustained while casting. Most often, that's damage from an AoO, but not always. |
| Ashok_Lal11-06-06, 08:10 PM | So is it only damage sustaned WHILE casing? eg AoO, Readied actions. Senario: Wizard casts MM in her inititive flys into an orc. init over Enemy Fighter comes in and hits Wizard for 8 damage Enemy Ranger holds his init for Wizard to cast spell Wizard takes 5ft adjust & casts shield in her init. The enemy ranger who held his init lets loose 2 arrows(rapid shot) doing a total of 10 damage. My question here is would the concentration roll be DC10+1spell level+ 18 (19)dam for the 2 attacks OR DC10+1spell level+10 dam from the readied action? (11) |

(11) I think you mean 28, and 20 for the DCs (you seem to be leaving off the 10+ in your calc., and there's no factor for spell level in this particular case.) In any case, the second one is right. Not total damage sustained in the round, but damage sustained while casting, either from AoO or readied attack, spell, etc. The exception is continuous damage, half of which for the round is added to the DC. So here's two examples: you're hit by a Melf's. On the second round, the acid does 6 points of damage. To cast a spell, you must make a DC 13 Concentration check, or lose the spell (DC = 10 + 1/2 continuous damage) You cast a spell while threateded. Fighter takes AoO, hits for 8 points of damage. You must make a DC 18 Concentration check, or lose the spell (DC = 10 + damage dealt) This would be the same for your readied arrow example. And, of course, don't forget you can cast defensively to avoid AoO's while casting. |

Yes thank you that is what i ment. Realy no facter for spell level? Fantastic! QUOTE:And, of course, don't forget you can cast defensively to avoid AoO's while casting. What about combat casting? All this time iv'e been playing the total damage for the round. Now this is going to make my Wizards life a LOT easer. thank you:D :D |
| Sarella Starshine11-06-06, 11:45 PM | combat casting is a feat that adds a +4 to concentration checks for casting defensively. |

Bold mine. You always add the level of the spell your trying to cast when damaged. Look at the table in the skill. Notice the little "1" next to the Concentraion DC heading? Look down to see what that little one means and you get this: 1 If you are trying to cast, concentrate on, or direct a spell when the distraction occurs, add the level of the spell to the indicated DC. You are right about only counting the damage while actually casting, though. |
| RavingDork11-07-06, 08:28 AM | You can't prepare an action to use rapid shot since it is a full round action (you can only prepare standard actions or less). |
