Hi, first time DnD'er here...

I'm confused as to what campaign is the standard one...I know that it is Greyhawk, but the only thing that has anything to do with Greyhawk on the Wizards site is Living Greyhawk. Isn't Living Greyhawk for RPGA events only? Is there a campaign that can just be played with friends at home and is there a sourcebook for it?

Also, a question for DM's. If you ever created your own world and presented it to your player's, how did they respond? Did they readily accept that they were going to play in your world or were there preferences for the official campaigns such as FG and Eberron?

Thanks.

Living Greyhawk is basically the campaign info for the default world. Greyhawk in the 3rd ed era really has no books at all (in fact, I think it has NEVER had books at all). It can certainly make it hard to play on Greyhawk with no information, but a quick purchase of the Living Greyhawk book can get you going.

I have a enourmous homebrew, a little daunting to new players that find themselves on a game that involves that world. However, the response has always been good, and the key to that is making the world seem as real and believable as the published ones. A half crafted and unfealt world wont interest anyone, but one with rich detail and that you clearly believe in will. I have plunked away at mine for almost 8 years now, and I think that is what has helped to make it so successful for players, even to the extent of a few of those players taking the source material and running games of their own for other groups.

The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer is 192 pages of fluffy goodness. The 'Living' part in the title doesn't mean anything - it's essentially a really good setting book for Greyhawk, and doesn't have any info that's specific for the RPGA or Living campaigns.

Yeah, what those guys said about Living Grayhawk!!!

and...

When I first started DMing, I had alot of ideas I wanted to put to work. Most of them were complete garbage. I decided to go ahead and make a homebrew continent set some wheres close to Faerun. I had a relatively interesting history and well thought out towns and current events layed out.

I was a newbie DM and all my players had only played once or twice before. Once we actually got around to playing, I realized I didn't take the time to figure out a campaign.

I still regret the 5 hours of mindless garbage that ensued.

If you want Greyhawk info, most of it is old AD&D books. THe setting info is applicable to any system, of course.

my world has parts of GreyHawk, Forgotten R, Judges Guild, and some other parts stolen from books, tv, and movies. Sometimes I even scrub the vin numbers off. But most gamers I met either don't care if your world is random collection or one campaign. They just want to be interesting and mover and shakers soon or later.
