| Alinda_Shipsail308-14-06, 10:38 PM | "damage reduction 5/slashing" What does this mean exactly? |
| LordQuazk08-14-06, 10:42 PM | A creature with this ability reduces damage dealt by Physical attacks like clubs, spears, arrows, and fists (not magical ones like fireball) by 5, except from weapons dealing slashing damage. |
| a_psh08-14-06, 10:46 PM | It means that physical damage taken by the creature is reduced by 5 points (it can't go below 0). This applies to weapon damage but not, say, fireball. Damage from slashing weapons is not reduced. So, for example, Skippy the werewolf's DR 10/silver means that Bob the fighter will do 10 less damage per hit to Skippy unless Bob is wielding a silver weapon. Look in your game books or the SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm) for more details. |
| The_Black_Dragon08-14-06, 10:47 PM | To further expand on Lord Quazk's explanation, I'll explain how to read DR in general. DR#/" This is read as "The creature/NPC/PC in question has Damage Reduction #. However if dealt damage from a " source, the Damage Reduction is not applied. So: DR5/Slashing="The creature/NPC/PC in question has Damage Reduction 5. However if dealt damage from a slashing source, the Damage Reduction is not applied. Even more simply: Subtract 5 from the damage dealt to this thing by non-slashing weapons. :) Hope that helps. |
| The_Black_Dragon08-14-06, 10:49 PM | Oops, look like a_psh beat me to the punch. I'll still leave my post there just so you can read it in case it helps you understand it better than a_psh's or LordQuazk's explanations. (Not to say that the other explanations aren't accurate.) |
| LordQuazk08-14-06, 11:03 PM | There is one little (or not) question I have on the subject of damage reduction, come to think of it. Magic weapons and epic weapons- I remember the book DR is explained in being unclear about magic weapons- it suggested that any magic weapon overcomes all DR execept ones like epic or +4 (or some bonus higher than the weapon's) Also, did it mention that epic weapons did the same? and is that thwarted by the barbarian's #/- ? Or am I just making this stuff up because of my unreliable memory? |

DR X/Magic is overcome by weapons with a +1 enhancement bonus or better. DR X/- reduces all physical damage by X (the dash after the slash means nothing overcomes the damage reduction). EDIT: Also there can be damage reduction with a material after the slash. For example you have a +30 sword and your opponent has DR 90/Weasel Meat. Unless your weapon is made of weasel meat, your damage is being reduced by 90. |

Only a weapon with the stated factor can overcome DR (Silver, Cold Iron, etc.). However, 3.5 DR numbers tend to be much lower (5-10) so even without the appropriate weapon, something's likely to get through. |
| Bulletproof_Condom08-15-06, 11:14 PM | If you're not sure what damage type your weapon does, check the Equipment chapter of the PHB. It'll be in that big table. Maces and clubs do bludgeoning. Most swords and axes do slashing. Shortswords, daggers, rapiers, and arrows do piercing. |
