| SS_Panzer_Officer03-04-07, 08:44 PM | Hi- Just curious; How much do games like Final Fantasy, Neverwinter Nights ect ect imfluence your D&D campaign? For me, it is a god send in a way, for example when I was describing the streets of Waterdeep, I remembered the graphics from Final Fantasy 12 and described the streets as being marble with intricate designs inlaid upon the Marble. thoughts? |
| SokenzanMarauder03-04-07, 08:46 PM | Never have and I hope to god they never will. -Gene |
| Damior03-04-07, 08:47 PM | I was a bit surprised when I found many elements of Final Fantasy 12 had similarities to my own homebrew (namely an ancient king who united the whole of the known world). The game doesnt influence the campaign directly, but it has influenced to format in which I describe the setting in the homebrew forum (As written in character, usually one of the Librarians of Lyadel) |
| Tempest Stormwind03-04-07, 08:52 PM | I game online due to living away from most of my group, and we make a bit of a joke of editing video game sprites to serve as miniatures. (We've got a rather substantial library of Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Seiken Densetsu ones, plus more than a few from the Tales or Lufia series. Most of them are recolored or spliced with other sprites to produce what appear to be professionally-done miniatures for online gaming.) In terms of actual gameplay, though? Very little. The biggest influence I can think of would probably be the use of clever cinematic tactics -- creative use of delay and ready enable us to execute properly-timed techniques that, if described cinematically, would resemble dual-techs or team combos like those you'd find in Chrono Trigger (amongst other games). However, we do this strictly in the context of D&D, not trying to emulate any specific game or move. (On a related note, never underestimate the tactical power of a simple benign transposition spell.) There are drawbacks, though. I've recently gotten in an argument with a fellow who imagines Whirlwind Attack like Neverwinter Nights' version. My issue with that? It's a dance move. You expose two thirds of your body and don't strike with any particular timing (hardly reflective of the required Combat Expertise or Spring Attack feats, no?) and it doesn't adapt to the situation. I always imagined it as a series of rapid attacks (like a small storm or a tornado of blades) rather than spinning like a top. |

| Seeker9503-04-07, 09:08 PM | How much do games like Final Fantasy, Neverwinter Nights influence your D&D campaign?Zero. I have not owned a console since Atari 2600. It is not that I am anti-console games. It is that I know the addictive nature of my personality, and I will not allow myself to get caught in that downward spiral. |

Hi- I know exactly what you mean, but I figure, if I can quit smoking, I can surely walk away from a console game IE I allot myself an hour to an hour and a half of console gaming. Ya just gotta be diciplined. Right? |

| Tempest Stormwind03-04-07, 09:52 PM | Mind showing off a couple of them? I'm intrigued. -Gene The Fire Emblem ones are mostly unmodified, and can be seen in a recent group photo we took (to show off the various minis) here (http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/FE%20Minis/A%20Group%20Photo.JPG). http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Torrin.gif http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Remonte/IkarosMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Eberron/AngelaPlains.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Eberron/LehatharathMiniNoHat.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Eberron/elerosse-mini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Eberron/thunder.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Perchance_to_Dream/Minis/kana.gif http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Perchance_to_Dream/Minis/DarkAssassin.png There's a lot more than that, but I felt those are somewhat representative of what we use. Bonus points if you can name the original games (or even the original sprites!) -- some are far easier to place than others. http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Whispers/BonusWarforgedFaceMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Whispers/HalfElfCaptainMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Whispers/HalfElfCrewmanMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Whispers/WarforgedSoldierMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Whispers/TravellerMini.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Perchance_to_Dream/PsionF.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/Eberron/Perchance_to_Dream/PsionM.png http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/New/Eberron/AngelaPortraitMini.jpg And so on.You get the idea by now. |
| SokenzanMarauder03-04-07, 09:57 PM | Wow, those are actually rather nice looking. I've got to try doing that for my games if I ever get around to actually DMing with OpenRPG or Fantasy Grounds. -Gene |
| Kazeofwinds03-04-07, 10:20 PM | My group's games are a mix of everything people on these boards seem to hate, namely, anime and video games. We dont alter the mechanics any, but the feel is a lot more anime-ish. Mainly names though, character names get stolen from everything, whether or not the character actually resembles the namesake is something else. EDIT, oh, and Nice sprites stormwind, the second one looks to be star ocean, and the third is from chronotrigger..I think. |

I'm generally the guy who whips those up on short notice for the DM, though I don't mind doing work like that for others if I have time. By the way, I also write nodes for OpenRPG. My last released node is available here (http://www.rpgsheets.com/cgi-bin/arcdb.cgi?cat=35&sec=4). Revisions on that which work in the Tome of Battle are forthcoming.EDIT, oh, and Nice sprites stormwind, the second one looks to be star ocean, and the third is from chronotrigger..I think. Not quite. While we have used Chrono Trigger minis in the past (beggars being men from 2300 AD, flames being the burning book from Enhasa), none are on that lineup. No minis from Star Ocean have been used in our games yet. (Hint: The second and fourth are the same character, just with dramatically different recoloring jobs. One's his side sprite, the other's the mirror image of his front sprite.) |
| InkBlot03-05-07, 02:03 AM | In a game I'm currently playing in, one player named his paladin's mount Rush. In another game, the DM is handing out circumstance modifiers as rewards for pulling off any interesting "dual-techs" or "triple-techs" by readying actions to perform martial manuevers together. In this same game, one of the player's goals with his character build is to recreate the Dragoon class from Final Fantasy. In yet another game, me and another player both wanted to play a Link clone, so we comprimised and split the concept into to characters. He played a boomerang-throwing fighter, while I played a sword&board ranger. And it goes the other way too - in any videogame that lets us create custom characters (from Final Fantasy to Soul Calibur III to World Of Warcraft), we're always recreating our favorite D&D characters. |
