Hit hp are 24, what will they be reducing to? The hit point modifier would drop into the negatives. The minimum hp per hit die is 1. So he would have 1 hit point per level. If he was wounded, that wound carries over, so it is possible that he dies. EX: Sorcerer is level 6, Con 14 (+2 mod). 24 Hit Points. Hit by poison dart that does 3 hit points and 12 CON damage. Hit points go from 24 to 21 (3 points) Then Con Modifier goes from +2 to -4. Since Sorcerer HD are d4, he must only have 1 hit point per hit die. That takes him to 6 hit points fully healed, but since he took 3 points, he is at 3 hit points and very sick. |

I do not fully understand this part. |
| claypigeons06-10-07, 03:36 PM | I a little confused about this. Why did his hit points go to 6 and not 4? I do not fully understand this part. The example sorcerer is level 6. You always get at least one HP per level. So it would have 6 hp. |
| Jacl3206-10-07, 04:07 PM | Oh.....so that is a precaution so you can not die from the poison. Well, let's say your con goes down to 10 from 14, do you take any damage? For the example, the sorcerer went down to 6 but 21-12 would actually = 9 so wouldn't it be 9? Or am I doing something completely wrong? What if the poison only took 10 points instead of 12, would the sorcerer still be at 6 hp?   |
| Mordent_Sage06-10-07, 04:29 PM | Oh.....so that is a precaution so you can not die from the poison. You can die from the poison. If he'd only had 12 Con to start with, his Con would be 0, which is deal, regardless of HP. However, only Con damage is lethal - other ability scores hitting 0 don't kill you; they just incapacitate you in a various ways. |

From 12hp, subtract any damage taken to find his current hp. If the Con drops to 4 from 14, the sorceror loses 5 hp per level making his new max -6. That is not allowed, he must have a max hp no less than 6, so his max hp is 6. From 6 hp, subtract any damage taken to find his current hp. |
| Phrennzy06-11-07, 01:57 AM | Okay, let's use a 1st level sorcerer. Con 12 (+1). HP 5. He pricks his finger on a poison needle and takes 1 point of damage, and 2 Con damage, dropping his Con to 10. He loses his Con based HP, so he has a new total of 4 hit points when fully healed. Then subtract the 1 point for the needle, so he has 3 hit points. Later, before he has a chance to heal, he fails his second poison save and takes 8 points of Con damage. Now his Con modifier is -6. So he would have 1d4-6. The minimum hit point per hit die is 1. So the Sorcerer would have the minimum, or 1 hit point. However, he was already wounded, so he is at 0. Con 'damage' or 'drain' does not cause 'damage' in the sense that a dagger does. It lowers the maximum hit point total of the character. A 10th level Fighter with an 18 Con has 90 hit points. He loses 15 in a fight. Now he has 75, but his max is still 90. Later, before he can heal, he loses 4 points of Con. That means that his maximum hit point total drops 20 points (his CON modifier is now only +2 instead of +4. 10 x 2 = 20). So his new maximum total hitpoints when fully healed is 70. He is still wounded, so he has to remember that he has 15 points of physical damage. So his current hit points are 55. I hope that all made sense. |
| goawayugh06-11-07, 11:55 AM | The biggest thing to remember here, is that you can NEVER have less than 1 hp per Hid Die (there is a Flaw that says otherwise, but let's not get into that). When you roll up your hp you add your Con modifier to each roll. If you Con modifier ever changes (lowers or raises) then your hp change accordingly. But again, never less than 1 hp per HD. |
| fflam07-17-07, 10:58 PM | A 10th level Fighter with an 18 Con has 90 hit points. He loses 15 in a fight. Now he has 75, but his max is still 90. Later, before he can heal, he loses 4 points of Con. He is still wounded, so he has to remember that he has 15 points of physical damage. So his current hit points are 55. So you are saying that if instead of losing 15 in that fight, he had lost 85 (leaving him 5 hp), and then lost the 4 points of CON, he'd have a maximum of 70, he would be at -15 hp (70 - 85 = -15), and therefore dead? *UPDATE* -- Never mind; I found the answer myself, elsewhere. In my hypothetical case, the fighter is in fact dead (although according to the rules he is strictly speaking only at -10, as you cannot go past that). --> fflam |
