A Constitution bonus increases a character’s hit points, so the ability is important for all classes. If a character’s Constitution score changes enough to alter his or her Constitution modifier, the character’s hit points also increase or decrease accordingly. Now, lets assume i make a 1st level wizard and put the 3 i rolled into con giving me 1HP at 1st lvl. Then, i make it all the way to 20th level somehow. My hit point total would be 20. Then, i read a Manual of Bodily Health +2 raising my con score to 5(-3 mod.). Is my new HP total 40? Instead, if i were to read a Manual of Bodily health +5, put my 20th lvl ability score point into con, and don an Amulet of Health +6 making my constitution score 15(+2) would my HP total increase from 20 to 120? Any help would be much appreciated. |

My hit point total would be 20. This is all correct. Then, i read a Manual of Bodily Health +2 raising my con score to 5(-3 mod.). Is my new HP total 40? Nope. You would still need to have rolled your hit dice every level; the fact that it all gets wiped out by your Con mod is irrelevent. Now, when your Con mod goes up from -4 to -3, the best you can still do for each hit die would have been 1. Instead, if i were to read a Manual of Bodily health +5, put my 20th lvl ability score point into con, and don an Amulet of Health +6 making my constitution score 15(+2) would my HP total increase from 20 to 120? Again, nope. But here's where tracking what you rolled each level will come in handy. When your final Con score is 15, you'll take each of your hit die and add the +2 to it. That'll be your new hit points. Any help would be much appreciated. Hope it helped. :) |

It means that retroactively, he gains 3hp for every time he leveled up (14 times)? Exactly. Every time you gain/lose constitution, whether from increases or decreases, permanent or temporary, your HP total effectively changes by your level for each increase or decrease of your Con mod. I find it's easier to think this way; instead of 3hp gained 14 times, once for each level, think of it as 14 hp, one for each level, gained 3 times, once for each increase in Con mod. |
