Hey everyone.

I have a question:

The PHB says:
If your character's constitution modifier increases by 1 (see table 1-1:ability modifiers and bonus spells, page 8) add +1 to his or her hit point total for every character level below the one just attained.
For example,if you raise your character's constitution from 11 to 12 at 4th level,he or she gets +3 hit point (one each for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd levels).Add these points before rolling for hit points(the next step).

Ok.

If I raise my constitution to a new score that doesn't have a different modifier from the previous one (ex: from 14 to 15),do I still get the extra hit points up to the level that this increment occured?

I've heard some players say that this case is not included. They said that for a hit point increment to happen one needs to raise his constitution by 2 points in such a case;ex:from 14 to 16 to get the extra hit points up to the level he currently is.

Can someone clarify this?

Thanks.

You just get a new level's worth of hp per your class hit die. You only get extra hp due to Con when the modifier increases, not when the stat increases.

If you were already at 15, though, and raised it to 16, you'd get the bonus hp as well. But no matter what your stat is at the start, any time you raise it by 2 points, your modifier increases by 1.

Yes, you get the hit point for the current level.

They worded it the way they did to make sure that you remembered to retroactively apply the bonus HP to all of your previous levels too.

Edit:
Oops... misread the OP...
Yes, as Pukunui said, it only happens when your modifier increases, not the raw score.

.You only get extra hp due to Constitution when the modifier increases, not when the stat increases.

Could be so as much as the other way since the official rules do not go more specific on this subject.
An increment of the constitution score means just that:number raising. Not followed by a modifier increment necessarily.

The question now is do we have an official Wotc answer for that? Some other players read the rules as they are written:Constitution increases = hit points retroactively increase;not necessarily followed by a modifier increment.

Dude, you quoted the rule from the PHB in your original post! It explicitly says you get extra hp based on the modifier not the base stat. That is the official WotC answer! What more do you want?

If you look at the first table in the PHB (at least I think it's the first), it lists what the modifiers are for different scores (so you can find your modifier from the ability score). After that, the PHB goes into detail what each score does, and to what you apply its modifier. Your Con mod is applied to your HP (as well as other things). Every time you roll for HP, you add your Con mod again. It stands to reason then, that your HP will be what you rolled on all of your hit dice, + your Con Mod * your number of hit dice. Thus, you only re-calculate your HP if your Con mod changes, not your Con score.

Edit:
Pukunui has a point. You did answer your own question with the quote you took from the PHB in your original post:

As stated above, if your Con modifier increase, then you adjust your HP accordingly. It did not state Con ability score, though this stat does affect your modifier.
