Converting 2nd Edition to 3rd Edition [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-10-04, 10:44 AM A while back I had a suppliment to convert 2nd edition to 3rd edition. Since then I have given that conversion away or lost it. Can anyone help me finding this info again? Thanks:)

03-10-04, 10:50 AM A word of advice from someone who did that when 3.0 first came out... Don't.

Take the flavor details and the race/class combo and rebuild from scratch in 3.0/3.5--it doesn't convert, despite what people tell you. The feats don't have an equivalent, the spells have changed, the skills are not transparent with non-weapon proficiencies and the magic items are drastically different. Save yourself the headache!

03-10-04, 10:57 AM Thanks for the input. But that doesn't really help me getting some of my harder headed old gamers that I am trying to get gaming with again. I think just playing some older guys from way back, converted, would get them in gear for 3rd/3.5.

So I would love some input please. Thanks

03-10-04, 11:02 AM Just to clarify, I'm not saying to scrap the old characters entirely, just don't try to directly convert existing characters.

For example, let's say you have a 7th level human Cleric named Krelios, built under 2nd edition rules. Now you want to play 3rd edition. Rather than trying to convert your weapon proficiencies and non-weapon proficiencies (say I favored a warhammer before and want to do that now) and all of that, just use the character creation rules from 3rd edition to build a 7th level human Cleric named Krelios who favors the warhammer. Take the basic premise and all of the personality, but don't try to make my non-weapon proficiencies into feats.

03-11-04, 09:52 AM There used to be a 2e/3e conversion guide on WotC's webspace, not sure where. If you have an early printing of the 3e players' handbook there is a cd-rom in the back with a bunch of stuff on it, including a pdf of the conversion guide.

03-11-04, 11:01 PM I agree with the poster who said not to convert characters to 3e. It is like converting Monopoly pieces for use in Clue (Professor Plum on the Boarkwalk with a top hat). They are two completely different games.
