| Mist-Bound09-05-06, 06:52 PM | I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but oh well... Like the title suggests, I'm asking for advice/assistance/recommendations on how to convert the party member NPCs (that's the NPCs you could have join your party) and the magical items of Baldur's Gate II/Throne of Bhaal to 3.5 edition. I know there's an article in Dragon #288 on a 3.5 edition Bhaalspawn, but anyway. Characters and Items I'm especially interested in: Viconia deVir- Female Drow Cleric of Shar (Note: by BG2 Viconia is what I call a "degenerate Drow"; she's lost her racial magic resistance and spell-like abilities due to rejecting Lloth coupled with prolonged exposure to the sun) Minsc- Male Human "Berserker Ranger" and his Miniature Giant Space Hamster; Boo. Lilacor- the stupid talking Greatsword The Flail of Ages- the multi-headed Flail that grows more powerful as you add heads to it. If you're interested in this idea, then please respond. |
| StevenO09-06-06, 12:46 AM | Although we hear Minsc is a Ranger I think he converts to a Ranger/Barbarian better. Jaheria is going to be straight druid. Imoen and the other Thief/Wizard get converted to Arcane Tricksters perhaps using sorcerer instead of wizard (especially Imoen). Our mysterious fighter/thief ally we find in the dungeon seems like he's begging to be a ninja/assassin. Aerie becomes a Mystic Theruge and I'd maybe us a Sorcerer instead of a Wizard. Mazzy Fenten becomes her beloved Halfling Paladin. The wayward Fighter/Cleric should just drop the fighter for straight cleric. Most of the rest should be straight foward although some may have good PrCs to go with them. Anyone special I'm missing. |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 01:26 AM | A nice series of responses, though I'm a little confused here and there... Minsc as a Ranger with a level or two of Barbarian works in my opinion. Given the changes made in 3.5, Jaheria works as a straight Druid. Her "Harper's Call" spell can simply be special access to the Raise Dead spell. Whilst I agree with you that Imoen and Nalia work well as Female Human Sorcerer/Thief/Arcane Tricksters (Arcane Trickster is a Prestige Class, right?), Yan Yansen -the Gnome Illusionist/Thief- might still work as Male Gnome Specialist Wizard (Illusionist)/Thief/Arcane Trickster. Any ideas on how to convert that nifty crossbow-thingamajig of his? Mysterious fighter/thief... do you mean Yoshimo? Because he was just a pure Thief -Ninja might be a good choice for him now though. So Aerie is basically a Female Elf Cleric/Sorcerer/Mystic Theurge? Works for me. And making Mazzy Fentan a Female Halfling Paladin works for me, as doese making Anmoen a straight Cleric (though could you suggest Domains- for him and Viconia both?). The only characters that leaves are: Haer'dalis: Tiefling [though he had no abilities in the game] "Blade"- a more fighting-orientated Bard kit. I guess a Bard/Fighter works well now. Korgan Bloodaxe: Dwarven "Berserker"- a Fighter kit, probably best translates a multi-classed Figher/Barbarian Cernd Human "Shapeshifter"- a Druid kit that has the power to transform into a Werewolf. Hmm... maybe a Human with a combination of the Druid class and the Werewolf Racial Class? Valygar Corthala Human "Stalker"- a Ranger kit that had a few low-level Mage spells and could backstab. Perhaps a Ranger/Thief? Keldorm Human "Inquisitor"- a Paladin kit that was dedicated to hunting down magic-users; it was immune to Hold and Charm and could cast Dispel Magic and True Seeing as Spell-Like Abilities, but couldn't use Lay On Hands, Cure Disease, Turn Undead or Divine Magic. Don't know what to give him, other than straight-out Paladin. Sarevok is really just a straight-out Fighter with Weapon Specialisation & Weapon Focus in Greatsword. |
| anki09-06-06, 03:15 AM | Minsc should gain the frezied berserker PrC since it makes him lose control like in the game. Lialcor is a +2 intelligent greatsword. His stats are 10 int;15 wis;15 cha.He has speech (common) and can see and hear 60ft.He has 2 lesser power of they can immunity to charm and confusion, but that seems a bit to powerful powers. Viconia has the Darkness and Evil domains since she worships Shar, while the other cleric(forgot his name,Anemon or something) should probably get Law and some other one Helms domain. Flail of ages-Add 1+ for each head attached and the appropriet energy damage(Acid,Cold,Fire). What about Irenecus?20th level Sorc? |
| Alten_Freehands09-06-06, 03:23 AM | You forgot Edwin the mage, he was a conjurer. He was the strongest NPC arcane caster in the game. Unless you made the main character a wizard. Funny too always mumbling under his breath about how superior he was. That game was the best 2ed game I ever played, I am actually playing through it right now. Minc's raging didn't come from his class, his rage came from being from Rashemen(sp), not a big FR player, but I think they are genetic bezerkers. Sarevok was a monster in that game, give him the vorpal sword and let him do his thing. That crit thing he has that causes his enemies to burst into flame...wow. Playing BG made me remember how tough it was to only be able to raise your abilitie scores with a wish or items. A toast to 2ed. To 2ed when an 18 meant something:pint: |
| Reighnhell09-06-06, 03:40 AM | And then there is Edwin His original class was The Conjurer Wizard Kit, which translates roughly to a Conjuration Specialist Wizard. Using my handy dandy Baldur's gate 2 strategy guide and a little hacking thanks to Shadowkeeper, lets try to stat him up. Ill set him as a level 13 Conjurer Wizard. | Mist-Bound09-06-06, 03:49 AM | Ah yes, I'd almost forgotten Edwin. And I played through with Sarevok once or twice- never had a critical hit from him cause an enemy to burst into flames. Nice stat up! Perhaps you could try some of the others? In truth, Minsc's Rage is less a class or a race thing and more the fact he was bug-f*k crazy. Of course, he did actually get more rage-per-days as he gained levels, so multi-classed Rgr/Brb would work. |

| anki09-06-06, 03:53 AM | Edwin doesnt have 16 con!al of his abilities are 10 except for int wich is 18! As for Irenicus i would give him spell focus(evocation) instead of necromacy. Rashemen(sp?) don't have genetic raging ability! Its his class ability. What about Boo?rat stats with 18 int? |
| Reighnhell09-06-06, 03:55 AM | Actually, when you pull his stats with Shadowkeeper ( a cool program that lets you hack BG2) and according to the Versus books strategy guide, Edwin does indeed have a 16 con. Strange, but true! I went with Spell focus Necromany on Irenicus just because the number of times he slaughtered me with Wail of the Banshee....jerk.. I used the stats that the game engine was running for the characters ( all the stats are in classic AD&D format) and followed the recommended rules from updating characters. Heck, the majority of Jon's spells are taken from his in-game memorized list. |
| anki09-06-06, 04:06 AM | Shadowkeeper?whats that? I don't why but he doesn't strike me as 16 con character.:D There is aslo the Gensen Bow(or something like that)-+4 longbow shoots lightning instead of arrows. The sword Alten Freehands is think of is the Harbringer.+3 Greatsword, everytime a crit is scored a 10th level firebal erupts from the sword. |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 04:12 AM | Greatly appreciated Reighnhell! Do you suppose you could try doing up the other party NPCs? Also, below is the game's stats for the Flail of Ages and Dagger of the Star (final form) taken from the Prima's Official Strategy Guide "Final Chapters: Bhaldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal"- any suggestions what to do to make them suitable for 3.5? Personally, I'd consider replacing the Poison damage with Force damage, or maybe Sonic- to better fit the "elemental" theme. Flail of Ages +5 THAC0: +5 Damage: 1D6+6, +2 Acid, +2 Fire, +2 Cold, +2 Electricity, +2 Poison Notes: grants permanent Free Action and +5% Magic Resistance when equipped, each hit has a 33% chance to Slow the enemy (no Saving Throw allowed). Dagger of the Star +5 THAC0: +5 Damage: 1D4+5, 5% chance of striking target with a Star Bolt (inflicts +1D8 Fire and +1D8 Electric damage) Notes: 15% chance after each successful hit that the wielder becomes Invisible for 60 seconds. |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 04:16 AM | In fact, the Short Bow of Gesen's exact game stats are: THAC0: +4 Creates an infinite supply of special ammunition- inflicts 2 Piercing damage +1D8 Electric damage. Wielder gains +20% Electric Resistance. On the subject of Viconia, I think her chosen domain from those availible to Shar (Darkness, Cavern, Knowledge, Evil) would probably be Darkness and Cavern. Also, I think that a BG2 Viconia would be handled by using the "Lesser Drow" racial option from the Player's Guide to Faerun. |
| MagicMouth09-06-06, 03:30 PM | Wouldn´t Sarevok make a great Blackguard... OK, perhaps he really didn´t have special dark powers in the game, but I think it would fit him well. |
| katarl09-06-06, 03:57 PM | I'm sure Irenicus should be a sorcerer... and Nalia, Imoen and Aerie wizards (int and all) ... Aerie wasn't really the sorcerer type, being a freak show exhibit and all, and Imoen grew up in Candlekeep, though she was a godling. Considering Minsc got to very high levels, then boo, being a normal animal companion would probably have a ton of extra HD. Given his insanely good storyline (comparatively), and loss of animal companion (effectively), I wouldn't mind giving him berserk rage 1/day, plus extra every once in a while. Lilacor- Intelligent Greatsword +3 Damage 2d6+3 Weight 5lbs Critical 19-20x2 Slashing Int 6 Wis 6 Cha 6 (flaw in construction) Minor- Immune to charm Major- Immune to confusion Despite being a +3, intelligent, speaking sword, Lilacor would have quite a low cost, being inherently flawed, and very unpopular with previous owners. (sharp, and edgy). |
| Reighnhell09-06-06, 04:18 PM | I'm going to run Minsc as a variant Ranger ala' Unearthed Arcana. Ranger (Minsc Variant) Gain: Rage, Indomitable Will, Tireless Rage as Barbarian. Lose:Combat Style, Spellcasting. Now I know that Minsc had access to his spellcasting in BG2, but if you directly translate his base attributes into 3.5 he doesn't have the Wisdom to actually cast any of his spells. So we can safely ditch the spellcasting to give him the far more in-character ability to Rage. In truth Minsc is almost a Ranger/Barbarian Gestalt, but that would be just sick. I will put up the final stats later this evening. Re: Shadowkeeper Shadowkeper is a program designed to work with the Baldur's Gate games that allows you to view and edit elements of the game. Stats, Character Models, Items, Weapons, etc, can all be manipulated and re-adjusted. Since the BG game engine is pretty much a computerised version of AD&D rules, all the character stats are in AD&D format. So when I put a characters like Edwins Con at 16 or make Jon Irenicus a Wizard, its because those are the stats and classes the game itself uses for those characters. From there I just use the conversion guide Wizards put out when the released 3rd Edition and follow my own judgement to keep the character as true to the original write up as possible. |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 04:34 PM | MagicMouth- a good idea; Sarevok just seems to scream Fighter/Blackguard (or Fighter/Rogue/Blackguard), doesn't he? Besides, such a "dark" class suits a former Spawn of the God of Murder, doesn't it? katarl- Nice work on Lilacor! Care to try some of the other weaponry? Like the Flail of Ages, Dagger of the Star or Short Bow of Gesen? Reighnhell- that variant Ranger sounds the way to go for Minsc; looking forward to seeing the rest of it in action. By the way, I was looking through the Bhaalspawn template and, well, frankly I'm not too sure on whether it really works or not. It's not the drawbacks that concern me -they seem like they should work- but the advantages... perhaps I should post it here and see what you can make of it? |
| The Ubbergeek09-06-06, 05:24 PM | Edwin was a Red Wizard of Thay, or so it was hinted, if I remember well, so maybe he'd apply for some Thay prestige class... |
| Bill Bisco: Average Adventurer09-06-06, 05:46 PM | Aerie's a Wizard, stop preaching this Sorceror Heresy. You know, Jan would make a fine Beguiler. :) |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 05:49 PM | Or perhaps a Beguiler/Thief? Sorry, I'm not 100% familiar with the Player's Handbook 2 yet. Does anyone know how to make that signature crossbow of his? Okay, this is the Bhaalspawn template as it was presented in DRAGON #288. See what you can make of it. “Bhaalspawn” is a template that may be applied to any dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, monstrous humanoid, outsider or shapechanger. The creature’s type changes to “Outsider” and it retains all of its base statistics and special abilities, except as noted below. AC: Natural Armour increases by +1 Special Abilities: in addition to retaining all of its original Special Abilities, the Bhaalspawn has a number of Bhaalspawn Abilities –both advantageous and disadvantageous- determined by its level/HD (see below). It cannot choose the same advantage/disadvantage more than once. Challenge Rating/Level: increases by +2 Favoured Class: if applicable, changes to “Sorcerer” Bhaalspawn Abilities by Level/HD (an equal number of advantages/disadvantages must be chosen): 1 or less to 3: 2 4 to 5: 3 6 to 7: 4 8 to 9: 5 10 to 11: 6 12 to 13: 7 14 to 15: 8 16 to 17: 9 18 to 19: 10 20+: 11 Bhaalspawn Advantages: Bull’s Strength (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Bull’s Strength 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Cure Moderate Wounds (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Cure Moderate Wounds 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Darkness (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Darkness 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Death Knell (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Death Knell 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Endurance (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Endurance 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Scare (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Scare 3/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. Unholy Blight/Holy Smite (Sp): the Bhaalspawn can cast Unholy Blight (if Evil) or Holy Smite (if Good) 1/day at a caster level equal to its total character level. If the Bhaalspawn is of Neutral alignment when this ability is gained, it must select whether it receives Unholy Blight or Holy Smite. Cold Resistance (Ex): the Bhaalspawn ignores the first 5 points of Cold damage inflicted upon it each round. Fire Resistance (Ex): the Bhaalspawn ignores the first 5 points of Fire damage inflicted upon it each round. Damage Reduction (Su): the Bhaalspawn has Damage Reduction 5/Silver. Fast Healing (Ex): so long as the Bhaalspawn has at least 1 hit point remaining, it heals 3HP each hour. Immortal Soul (Su): the Bhaalspawn ceases to acquire age penalties once it gains this ability (age penalties already inflicted remain) and now receives a +10 bonus to resist Death Effects. Poison Blood (Su): once per day, if the Bhaalspawn is wounded, it may coat its weapon with its own blood, counting as having applied a dose of deathblade poison. Poison Immunity (Ex): the Bhaalspawn is now immune to poison. The Slayer (Ex): as a Standard Action, the Bhaalspawn may transform itself into the Slayer, a monstrous and twisted version of itself styled after the Avatar of Bhaal. As the Slayer, the Bhaalspawn receives +8 Strength and +6 Natural Armour. Also, its Unarmed Attacks become Claw Attacks inflicting 1D10 Slashing Damage (unless the damage inflicted would have been higher; the higher choice of damage remains). The Bhaalspawn can transform into the Slayer whenever it likes, but suffers 1 point of temporary Con damage each round it remains in the form of the Slayer. Bhaalspawn Disadvantages: Battle Recklessness (Ex): if the Bhaalspawn’s hit points drop to half or below of its maximum HP value, it becomes reckless in battle; suffer a –1 Morale Penalty to all attack rolls and AC until its health is restored above half of its maximum value. Blood Thirsty (Ex): the Bhaalspawn must pass a DC20 Will test each time it attempts to make an attack that would inflict subdual damage. Failure means that the attack is to inflict lethal damage. Also, if the Bhaalspawn ever threatens multiple enemies, it must pass a DC20 Will save. If the save is failed, and should the Bhaalspawn posses multiple attacks, it must split its attacks so that it attacks as many targets as possible. Called to Hell (Ex): should the Bhaalspawn be reduced to zero or negative hit points, it enters a coma from which it cannot return until it has been healed to at least half of its maximum hit point value. Charisma Loss: the Bhaalspawn loses 2 points of Charisma. Wisdom Loss: the Bhaalspawn loses 2 points of Wisdom. Demon’s Blood (Ex): if the Bhaalspawn is bleeding, all Evil Outsiders may track the Bhaalspawn as though they had the Scent quality. Haunted (Ex): Undead within 60 feet of the Bhaalspawn are always aware of his location- even if it protected by Invisibility to Undead, they are aware of the exact square where it is located, though it still remains invisible and inaudible to them. Infernal Temper (Ex): the Bhaalspawn has (or develops) a raging fury that is just barely held in check below the surface, erupting violently when the Bhaalspawn is frustrated or humiliated. Once this drawback is gained, whenever the Bhaalspawn fails any skill check by more than 5 or is taunted, goaded or humiliated in some manner, it must pass a DC(10+amount the check was failed by) Will save or explode in a verbal onslaught of fury, after which it suffers a –1 Morale Penalty to all skill checks until it succeeds a skill check by 5 or more. Murderer (Ex): the Bhaalspawn must, at least once every 13 days, kill an NPC with an Int of at least 3 and which would not normally be Hostile towards the Bhaalspawn. Failure to do so results in the Bhaalspawn losing 1 point of Wisdom per day until it kills the requisite target, whereupon all lost Wisdom is restored. This lost Wisdom cannot be restored in any other way, but the Bhaalspawn’s Wisdom cannot drop lower than 3. Nightmares (Su): every time the Bhaalspawn rests, it must pass a Will saving throw (DC10+1 per each day the nightmares were successfully resisted). Failure means it must roll a D4 and consult the table below. 1: suffers a –2 Morale penalty to attack rolls 2: suffers a –1 Morale penalty to all saving throws 3: regains no health 4: confronts his demons and triumphs- no penalty Supernatural Infamy (Ex): NPCs always have an initial reaction to the Bhaalspawn of no better than Unfriendly; they automatically distrust and dislike him, as they receive an eerie feeling in his presence. Tainted By Evil (Ex): irregardless of its true alignment, the Bhaalspawn is always considered to have an alignment of Evil when adjudicating spells, spell-like effects and supernatural abilities. This means that Holy weapons hurt it, Detect Evil spells register it as Evil and so on. If the Bhaalspawn actually is Evil, then it is now hurt by Holy Water. |
| Mist-Bound09-06-06, 06:27 PM | Hmm... looking at the Bhaalspawn template, I'm suddenly inspired with three conceptual Prestige Classes made especially for the Bhaalspawn. Hellcaster- this is a Spellcaster PrC (Arcane or Divine; it doesn't matter) that focuses on learning to tap and use the infernal energy within a Bhaalspawn's essence as power. This could also be good for a Half-Fiend or Fiendish Spellcaster. Murderlord- a Rogue PrC; just how good an assassin can you be if you carry within you a sliver of the essence of the god of assassins? Bloodclad- a Warrior PrC; let others skulk in darkness and attack from afar, you know the purest way to carry out murder is to get right into your opponent's face and then tear it off. What do you think? These sound like ideas worth developing? |
| StevenO09-07-06, 12:15 AM | I see some others have picked up the cause. To further my original listing as I didn't adventure much with some of those characters. Haer'dalis: Bard with a little swashbuckler thrown in. Korgan: I never adventured with that mad dwarf so no ideas. Cernd: As a wildshape specialist several PrCs in the complete warrior may work. Valygar: Ranger prestige classes. Keldorn: Paladin going into Inquisitor (Complete Divine) Jan: Many possibilities although Beguiler combines Illusionist/Thief to some extent. For an inventive tilt you go with Artificier from Eberron. Our long lost brother Sarevok: While in the game is is possible to dual class him into wizard or thief his personallity just screams Blackguard. How you get there is up to you. Many of the signiture weapons and items in BG are just too powerful to make anything less that artifacts. For any who are interested my first BG character was a nice Paladin with 18/00 Str, 18's in DEX, CON, and CHA, and the minimums in Int and Wis. There was very little that stood in his way long. |
| The Ubbergeek09-07-06, 12:18 AM | Korgan was a rather bloodthirsty CE Dwarf, yet he had a strange of honor... Perhaps a Fighter/Barbarian mix, I don't know. |
| The Ubbergeek09-07-06, 12:35 AM | Not to doublepost, but there is a thread on the Forgotten Realms side about such conversions already. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=481961) Now, I'd like Icewind Dale serie and corrected Neverwinter Nights ones.... |
| Reighnhell09-07-06, 02:15 AM | Well, I was going to post some more, but that previous link has some awesome mods that my humble skills may not be able to match. Go have a look, you won't dissapointed. |
