"Shattersteel" and "Redguard" are the names of one NPCs bastard swords in my campaign. They are a +5 Icy Burst Adamantine Bastard Sword of Speed and a +5 Wounding Defending Firey Burst Adamantine Bastard Sword, respectively.

Another NPC in the same campaign has a Rapier of Puncturing named "Gouging Wind"

I assume you mean "Excalibur."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_swords

The latter half will avail you. Also, i find piecing together latin works, as well as out right stealing.

Such as the Malleus Maleficarum, a +1 impedance magebane mace would make a great weapon for that cleric of Cuthbert who deals with evil mages. So what if the "Witch's Hammer' was a book?

EDIT: Hmm, a bit slow on the draw;)

I like Ichigo's Zanpakto's name, Zangetsu.

Nadaka a sword. Sarnga a bow. THeres more to it than that, but they are epic weapons wielded by Vishnu in hindi myth.

not a sword, but I think Cat's Claw (the Grey Mouser's dagger) was the coolest name for a thief's weapon.

I gave an intelligent sword to my group. The sword was an ancient wizard who was entrapped in a sword, his name was Faur the twisted. He's a fun sword...

Never used it, of course.

Ursula (my dwarf fighter) named her bastard sword "Vera" which is a reference to Jayne Cobb's very favorite gun. (Jayne Cobb the Firefly character, not Jayne Cobb the member here).

Our rogue named his rapier "Melissa" because there is a woman at WotC whose name is Melissa Rapier.

Our poor DM...

OT - We a player who named his character named Amok, just so we would yell out, "Run Amok!"

I had a fighter once who named his vicious, merciful khopesh "Sloth's Revenge." Appropriate, too, since we were fighting the Seven Deadly Sins--or possibly just a bunch of powerful Rakshasas who styled themselves after aforeasid Sins--in that campaign.
Damn, that was a good sword. An extra 3d6 untyped non-lethal damage per attack in return for which I had to take a measley 1d6 non-lethal damage per swing? Sign me up!

Glamdring the Foehammer
Orcist the Goblincleaver
Anduril, Flame of the West

Mine:

This may not be the most appropriate, but my brother was once part of a group that had created an intelligent bastard sword that accurately answered anything you asked it. Naturally, they decided to be funny and dubbed it The Wise Bastard Sword. What happened next was the punchline. They decided that this sword must have a counterpart, one that was so stupid that it always provided the wrong answer to any question you asked it. They called that one The Dumb B**** Sword.

The DM was the one who thought it up, actually, though they were playing at a pretty high level. I think both were more meant as joke weapons than anything else. I don't know all the details, as I didn't even know what D&D was until my brother started playing it with a friend of his.

Ethanol and Methanol(two forms of alcohol) are often added to gasoline in North America, but no, gasoline isn't any form of alcohol.

Many of the unique weapons in the Diablo games have nice names, albeit rather violent (‘Spineripper’, ‘Bloodtree Stump’, etc…)

One of my recent favourites (as a paladin-loving player) is Lightbringer, the strongest sword available to Cecil in Final Fantasy IV Advance: simple and beautiful for a holy sword.

A good source for cool weapon names is Romance of The Three Kingdoms.

I think there was a sword in one of the Warhammer books called Grudge-Bringer; IIRC it was mainly a normal sword, but it had an ability which allowed it to shoot a ball of fire...basically the sword could cast fireball.

other names...

Widow Maker

Mortimer

Riot Control (works well for a bashing weapon)

Beaver Cleaver

His Majesty (works well for a somewhat psychotic character who believes his sword talks to him - "Yes, your majesty. I'm sorry, but His Majesty says you're guilty of treason and must be executed. So sorry...really.")

I'd suggest looking at other videogames besides Final Fantasy, for that matter. I mean, Kingdom Hearts has plenty of weapon names...after all, Sora's got how many Keyblades in the course of two games? There's usually at least one, typically two per world, and he got a new set for KH2, plus Riku's Path to the Dawn, and Kairi's un-named flower blade. I don't even want to try listing them all off, at the moment.

Then there's Devil May Cry (I've only played 1 and 3, but that's got enough weapon names, even if not all of them are swords). Force Edge, Rebellion, Sparda, Alastor (lightning sword), Ifrit (flame gauntlets), Yamato, Cerberus (ice 3-section nunchaku), Agni and Rudra (fire and wind twin scimitars), Nevan (lightning guitar/scythe), Beowulf (light gauntlets and greaves), Spiral, Artemis, Nightmare Beta, Ebony and Ivory, Kalina Ann (all of Dante's collection of guns...at least those named)...the list goes on.

Outside of these, I was writing a story once where several of the characters ended up with weapons of various levels of power, most with Tolkien-style Elvish names (Sindarin, typically). They were:
Anorgamp and Ithilcarch (loosely, Sunclaw and Moonfang, respectively; a pair of curved daggers, any powers they had unrevealed)
Dhurmegil Duelen (Darkblade Nightstar, a cursed sword that fed on blood)
Carch Angcrist (Iron-Cleaving Fang, and yes the name was a crib off the translation of Tetsusaiga from Inuyasha. However, this one was a polearm that could break through almost any armor).

In one of the campaigns I was in, a villain had a particularly nasty dagger called Heartrender, at that. No explanations needed for what it was made to do, I'd say.

'Schadenfreude'. :D Currently wielded by a petulant, sardonic, and sadistic half-elf duelist.
'That Which Divides Day From Night And Life From Death' (granted, it'd be more the title, and in draconic, at that, but still).
Rainslayer - it's an iaidomaster's katana, so named for cleaving raindrops in twain.

Ones from elsewhere:
Amoracchius, Fidelacchius, and Esperacchius. Bonus points if you get the reference.
The Key ... see, you stick it in people, and turn, and it unlocks their death. >.>
'Claimh Solais' and 'Crissaegrim'. Yay for Castlevania.
Someone else mentioned it, but I also like "Save The Queen".

My old fighter/duelist character had a rapier he called Whisper. He favoured critical hits (yey Improved Crit [rapier]!), skilled fighting and trickery over brute strength - hence his saying, "A Whisper is worth more than a shout in the right place."

He also liked to say "Now, what did we learn?" after disarming an enemy (and using Snatch Weapon) and either stabbing them with their own weapon or handing it back to them, hilt first.

I've always been a fan of named weapons. I think they add a lot more personality to the game and they give the players more investment in their items. For example, a player doesn't have a problem with selling a +1 flaming longsword. However, he's far more reluctant to sell off Emberedge, the flaming sword he's trusted for the last three levels, the sword that saved him from that hobgoblin rogue a month ago. Instead, he's going to spend the cash to upgrade it. That's how legendary weapons are born.

Some of my favorites, from PCs of mine:
*Godbuster: +2 unholy, axiomatic, outsider bane heavy mace
*Wasp and Hornet: two +1 returning daggers
*Goodnight Kiss: +1 keen, suppression rapier
*Fang of Set: +2 shortsword of venom
*The Honorable Monseur Pointy, Esquire: +3 shock shortspear of speed

Amorracchius, Fiddelachius, Esperachius, Dude, that knights of the Cross from the dresden files. BEST...PALADINS...EVER...PERIOD!!

Here are a few suggestions, I once used
Eternal Damnation: a vampiric, unholy, vile greatsword
Lover's vengeance: poisonous, merciful dagger
Final Hope: A holy, righteous, valorous, evil outsider bane longspear
Silence: a ghost touch, merciful, kukri

Thats all for now...

My definate favorites are sword names that my own characters or those within the party have used:

Chaos
Vengance
Dusk
Twilight
Mirror's Edge
Ambrosia
Absinthe
UnHallowed Light Slayer
Obsidian Rain

Some of them are horridly cheesey (ok...just one and it's most assuredly the UnHallowed, but hell it was my brother's and he was proud damn it, lol)

I haven't had much of a chance to use named swords in my games, but I do rather enjoy inventing them.

The Waxing and Waining of the Moon: A double scimitar
The Merciful Headsman: A keen, vorpal sword
Agony: a horribly nasty barbed sword
The Knife of the Long Night: as assassin's favored blade
Matilda: perhaps a singing, dancing sword
Harrow: just a sword really

Amorracchius, Fiddelachius, Esperachius, Dude, that knights of the Cross from the dresden files. BEST...PALADINS...EVER...PERIOD!!

Indeed! :) If I ever play a Paladin, they'll be modeled either on Quixote, or one of the Knights of the Cross... probably Shiro.

Can't believe I forgot these ones - They're not from d&d, they're artifact-level swords from some of my own stories. Maybe someday I'll try to put them in stats.

Fire of the Heavens: A simple longsword without adornment, beyond that it glows like lightning on the horizon when swung, and growls like distant thunder. Among its powers are the ability to conjure (and somewhat control) storms, as well as to channel half-divine lightning strikes through the blade that sets things and people on fire (hence the name).

Earthbreaker: So named because it was forged for a dire extraplanar warlord ... from the meteor that struck the planet and plunged it into a minor ice age. It's a falchion made from meteor rock, and enchanted to function as adamantine. Heavy as heck, but demons have high str scores. :p

I remember a cartoon that I saw once where a warrior had a magical sword called "Kaladron." The sword could transform into any metallic object at the warrior's order. And whenever he called out the sword's name, it would return to the warrior's hand. It was awesome!

I got this one from a short story called The Talking Sword.

The narrator was just that, a sardonic demon in the shape of a sword who went by the name of...

THE EDGE OF FIRE AND DESTINY THAT BURNS AND CUTS THROUGH FLESH

...or Fred, for short. :D I know that it'd have to be an intelligent weapon with a dragonbane enchantment on it (In the story, Fred travels throughout history to train dragonslaying heroes).

Man, I figured by now someone would've come up with a big list from history, literature & film. Well, some of these have been named; to which I'll add:
Mournblade, twin to Stormbringer (Elric series)
Greywand, Fafhrd's bastard sword (Lankhmar series)
Tendrun, the evil soldier's sword in Dragonslayer
Galatine, Sir Gawaine's blade

Also:
Gae Bolg, Cu Chulainn's spear
Gungnir, Odin's spear
Mjollnir, Thor's hammer
Ascavilya

Just read through this thread trying to come up with a name for my Bard's sword and thought I'd add a couple more to the list.

From the Amber series by Roger Zelazney, Corwin's sword Greyswandir and his brother Brand's sword Werewindel. Known as the Dayblade and the Nightblade respectively.

I saw mentioned earlier that someone suggested using a latin translation and that is what I have done. My Bard's sword is known as Cuspis Reverto, or Pointed Return.

3 Swords i've come up with: Azoireus - Hilmathus and Hilmether

2 Brotherswords:
Hilmathus - An Evil Sentinent Blade that corrupts it's wielder. A powerful sword.
Hilmether - When the Hilmathus is cleansed of evil this is the result. A Holy artifact sword place on earth by a god to slay the wicked.

Azoireus - Upon finding it, it looks like a normal azureblue sword. But once a few rites have taken place (don't bother with the details) it is atuned to it's wielder, and then it's wielder can unsummon and summon the blade.
It's a +5 Keen Defending Longsword that can be magically appear into your arm by saying it's name if you are atuned to the blade. Free action to draw.

Azoireus works wonders for assassination missions and to be alert of attackers at all times ^^

Here is my contribution

Heart-Taker: +2 Bastard Swoard, Intelligent (low level, only self aware), Neutral
When delivering the killing blow on a confirmed critical, the sword is guided to the heart of the target and impales the heart, upon extracting the sword the is withdrawn from the body, in a spray of blood, staked by the sword.

(I created this sword to add some flavor to the game.)
If you have additional enemies, either it will scare them :surrender , or make them more angry  . The wielder will want to slide off the deceased's heart off the sword before continuing combat (move action); the heart on the sword imbalances the sword (-2 to attack), until removed or after 3 rounds of combat where it flings off the sword (random direction).

Only after the first heart extracted in combat, as described above, the sword identifies itself to its owner "I am Heart Taker." It is the only thing it says after each heart is taken.

One of the games my brother played in involved an intelligent bastard sword called "The Wise Bastard Sword". What they did next was what really made it strange. They figured there had to be an opposite to this weapon, and thus was born "The Dumb B*tch Sword". Go figure.

You don't say? That's amazing! I have never heard of such a thing. Especially not from you, not in this thread. :detect: (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=12315297&postcount=37)

I believe the phrase is: Good Morning, Sun-Shine! :D

Fulgore & Firefang: My Black Flame Zealot's two kukris

Crystal Teardrop: Spellthief's dagger (yeah, from Michiru Yamane's composition)

Love: Quite an emotional (and unfortunate) character of mine named his rapier like that. He always had it with him, yet anyone that got struck by it always got hurt.

In a really non-PG13 game, I had quite a vulgar thief, his sword was named Mydeek.

"I killed him/her with Mydeek" ... "Wait until you get a taste of Mydeek" ... etc. Oh, fun times.

My Half Frost Giant wields a large greatsword named "Chill." +3, Icy Burst; and, when unsheathed, can be used as an Immovable Rod that only he can move. I've since added Maiming and Magebane to synergize with Improved Critcal and the Occult Slayer PrC.

I usually tend to name magic items my characters have. In one game my monk/ranger wields a family scimitar called Jenoya's Talon, and in another a vanara shaman wields a heavy mace called Mother Bear's Paw.

A sword is just an 'extension' of another body part. Therefore, I name my sword:

In one of the OD&D campaigns I'm running right now, the two player characters (a gnome and a harpy, of all things!) are questing for a famous sword that the gnome PC's eccentric uncle acquired and then lost. The sword is properly known as the Dracoferrum, or the Sword of Dracus, because it was wielded by an ancient emperor called Julius Dracus, a half-dragon son of Bahamut who defeated Tiamat in battle and then founded an empire.

What the PCs don't know is that the main villain (an agent of Tiamat who wants to resurrect her) needs both the Dracoferrum and another incredibly powerful sword, the Óðinnjárn, in order to accomplish his goals. The Óðinnjárn centers around an ancient myth that the end of world will be nigh when the sword's hiding place is found and the sword is thereafter removed. (In metagame terms, the Dracoferrum is nothing more than a holy avenger +5, while the Óðinnjárn is just a vorpal sword +5, but it's the back-story that really makes them worth campaigning after!)

I have a nice name, for a sword wielded by an 18th level LG fighter worshipping Heimdall, who also happens to be a Grandmaster of the longsword. (2nd edition rules with options - our group isn't fully changed over yet, especially at high level.)

The sword is a LG +5 intelligent adamantite longsword with special and extraordinary powers - which include telekinesis and disintegration on a hit, special purpose killing evil. The name? Morglachel - which is sort of Tolkien Elvish and means something like "evil-cleaver from the stars". Howzat?

When this character gets used in a 3E game, I'll probably have vorpal put on this lovely weapon. Keen is unnecessary - the character already has improved critical as a feat.

I also have another character - 18th level wizard - who is carrying around the Krill of the High Lord Loric. (The party once went to the world of Stephen Donaldson's Unbeliever series.) This was translated into a +2 dagger, +8 vs. evil, double dice damage at least, triple on rolled 12-16, quadruple on 17-19, instant kill on a 20. It also has special powers against undead, and casts heal once per day on command.

Yes, a +8 weapon carried by a wizard. Sick, isn't it?

"the 7th Twilight of Oblivion's Gate" (Rokugani [OA] adaptation for Faerun)
-a "Kakita katana" (treat as adamantite w/ +2 Diplomacy vs. "easterners"). bestowed gift to Samurai from a Scorpion clan daimyo.
-+1 base enchantment, w/ base intelligent weeapon design; empathy, Detc. Evil or some other low grade power i think (been a while) etc. LN align, low ego.
-bears odd curse; once drawn, it cannot be sheathed until it has drawn blood, ie)at least 1 HP of damage. problematic vs. incorporeals, plants, constructs, etc. Renshi, (PC, friend's character), frequently would have to injure himself (1 HP carefully [out of combat] as a Full-Rnd Action typically) to stow weapon. this also served as a lesson in humility as per bushido mythoi and not to use Iajutsu so flippantly.
this is a byproduct of it's languishing period in the Shadowlands where it was somewhat tainted.
-trapped hilt/pommel; same premise as Blade's (the film) katana. hilt must be adjusted 1/2 inch clockwise, otherwise 3 prongs swing out at 45 degrees w/ scorpion poison (hence clan) on them. low Search and Disable Dev. check typically to find this. blood drawn from the curse FX (Su) is drawn down blood line of the blade to basically empower this trap function. ie)the blood transubstantiates into the poison at twilight every day, provided blood was drawn.

Weapons I have known playing D&D from 1st to 3rd edition. And I will switch to 4th when it comes out, too.

Bar-ethel - a bastard sword that meant true death in elven from Desert of Desolation series
Spurbite: a Dagger +2 longtooth
Whisper: a thief's shortsword
The Knightingale; a bastard sword of healing
Sacrus Cavieo: a paladin's Holy Avenger
Fothadinos: a Dwarven waraxe forged by one of my characters. It was the first one that did not shatter.

Honor - because honor is a double-edged sword. For a longsword, of course.

Lies - Because women know nothing of honor, but know much of lies (for a stiletto given by a courtier). The giver was also an assassin, of course, and very good with poisoned daggers.

Duty - for a very, very, very old Clansword of the family.

The Iris of the Eladrin - For a sentient crystalline devil-slaying dancing holy sword.

Rose - For an elegant rapier with a flower motiff guard.

Thorn - the companion dagger, a harsh and cruel spike of a main-gaunche, as crude as Rose was beautiful.

Angfar - The Sword of White Blood. A merciful wounding holy longsword.

Shrek - a very big half-orc's very large katana. Named for the sound it made disemboweling people.

FOrge - A dwarf's flaming burst greathammer.

Vivus Dius, the Life of Day - A ghost touch staff of striking and healing.

Centus Mortus, the Hundred Deaths - A sword of Foebane (Bane to all a Ranger's FE)

Mortus Dius, the Final Day - A vorpal glaive. "I bring your Last Day!"

Star's Fang and Star's Claw: The Daisho set of a samurai named Stargrove.

Buzz : An axe forged out of saw blades for d20 Modern. Rotary saw blades, that is, and carbide-tipped!
