I think mine was a Warblade 23 based on Iron heart. That guy could dish out up to 200 damage in a single strike without a critical.

Wood Half-Elf Ranger3/Sorcerer9 with Transmutation-Fokus - Jumps over the chasm shrouded in flames and slashes you in the face with his insanely glowing scimitar.
Not top of the notch, but definetly cool. :D

I'm liking one of my current charries.
A half vampire (-light sensitivity, + gaseous form) Tanuki Hengeyokai grave-robbing fighter who fights with a shovel, and is in possession of a 50lb bag of holding and a 49 lb rock.
In addition, thanks to a bonus he got from a demigod we killed he gets to use mummy rot on somebody once per day, which essentially results in him being able to destroy somebodies constitution with a successful grapple. Hence my new catchphrase, "Reach out and touch somebody" :D

Coolest? I have never considered my characters cool nor have I ever gone for the cool factor while creating and playing a character. One of my favorites, though, was Nug, a simple half-ogre fighter who finally cashed in his chips at level 5. He was simply a ton of fun to play. During one adventure he punched through a door, grabbed the thief listening on the other side and pulled the door off of it's hinges. He then used the door/thief as a makeshift shield while we tried to clear out a thief's guild. As we were running for our lives we passed by that same doorway and he simply held the door in place while others nailed it in place. The thief had absorbed quite a few arrows and was stuck to the door when Nug finally let go.

-It's got to be my current character: Cleric (of Lathander) 5 / Morninglord of Lathander 5 / Contemplative 4. Not so much because of the mechanical stuff, but because of the stories.

Have to go with my half mind-flayer half tarrasque ninja 12/shadowdancer 10. He'd hide in plain sight and then wait for you to turn your back before he'd strike with his +16 kukris of Instant Kills. Because of his size he could also mind blast entire villages. He was cool. :looloo:

On a real note, enjoyed playing an Irda mage from Dragonlance 2nd edition (peaceful race that became physically sick when committing physical violence). Gotta get creative with spellcasting when you have no damage spells.

-Wait, a second...You do realize that that is technically impossible, right? Both are PrCs, and require levels in other classes.

My coolest character was probably my Poison Dusk Lizardfolk with 7 levels in Rogue. He was awesome with his poison and high ability scores and sneak attack

The coolest NPC I made, I just made yesterday preparing for this week's DND session. It's a Blind Kobold Monk (Level 6) who's incredibly hard to hit. His Dex +8 alone, but his armor class is a lot higher then 18.

how on earth did you make a half illithid half tarrasque character that a DM allows?!?! thats awesom!!!!

At the risk of being serious in a potentially stipud thraed, the coolest character I ever witnessed wasn't mine, but my younger brother's... a 2.0 "Mystic" templated Specialist Wizard (Illusionist). These days, he'd probably be a Wu Jen focusing in Water or Air. His template required a taboo- so he chose 'draw no blood'. He became very skilled in misdirecting, avoiding, and otherwise non-lethally subduing enemies. He was cool-headed, at least.

Looking at the weapons he had I would guess he was way into the epic levels. I wonder what the other characters were in that campain.

The most unoptimised, but fun characters I played was a human half-gold dragon, Silver dragon Shaman.
DM: The wizard lets loose three rays of fire at... (DM roles dice) you (pointing at me). Role a reflex save.
ME: No...
DM: Your fit in the chest with two of the rays.
ME: And nothing happens. Does the wizard look worried yet.
DM: No, of course not... in fact he says "Ah, your one of those RED half-dragons aren't you"
Next round
DM: The wizard lets loose with a ray of cold energy. Role a reflex save.
ME: No...
DM: (frowns)
ME: Does he look worried now?
DM: Yes...
Unfortunatelly I still died, but man was that satisfying. The next most fun was a level 14 duskblade, once again unoptimised (used some of the weakest spells on his list). It was interesting: I almost took out a cleric and a sorc with no help.

i have a new one for fourth edition: dana longacre, halfling pyromaniac extrordanaire.

Not played one in 4th yet, but in prev editions
The Heat Mizer ... 1/2ling Cleric of Kuzzuth (2nd)
The Heat Mizer ...1/2ling Sorc/Bonded Summoner (3.5)
~Burned a Red Dragon to death, because it threatened the party

Neither one was the "coolest" but definantly the HOTTEST!!!!

"They call me Heat Miser,
What ever I touch

Too bad he takes a -2 penalty to AC, is denied Dex bonus to AC, only moves at half speed, takes a -4 penalty to Search and most Str/Dex based skill checks, and is filled with general suckage; such as the fact that everyone has concealment from him.

I'd say it was a half-elf paladin/bard. He wasn't very powerful, but he was fun because he was brash, charismatic, and extraverted, and he really wanted to be a good paladin, but he wasn't quite sure how it was done. Not that he was a bad guy -- it's just that saying "In the name of the Silver Flame, I shall cleanse the world of your wickedness, evildoer!" didn't come naturally to him like it would to most pallies. I found it sort of fun to roleplay someone who was, himself, sort of roleplaying being a paladin without really being a paladin to the core of his being.

Too bad he takes a -2 penalty to AC, is denied Dex bonus to AC, only moves at half speed, takes a -4 penalty to Search and most Str/Dex based skill checks, and is filled with general suckage; such as the fact that everyone has concealment from him.

Hmm... at level 6, the monk has +4 base attack bonus, and 19 wisdom isn't impossible for a monk, so he could well have 5-foot radius blindsight. That would get rid of many of the disadvantages.

4e Ark, paladin of death.
In 3.5 he was a LG paladin of ass whooping.

Most violent paladin ever. Good thing lawful includes vengence.

first one that comes to mind would be kyrus:
2 fighter / 2 psi warrior then dervish i believe
dark skined xelph from the psi hand book, ended up getting the insectoid template from the 3.0 savage species and a belt of enlarge person.

thats right a large sized 6 armed scimitar wielding blender of death. he almost took down an illithed single handedly, it was great.

I was in a party with an evoker once. I wanted to fill the gap so I did almost exactly what you did. That was fun times. I'd block off half the baddies while my party would easily damage the snot out of the other half. For a long time I had dealt only 3 points of damage with a crossbow. Finally one day we fought a large number of mooks and I let loose an empowered fireball, my only serious damage spell. I also had acid arrow for utility reasons, though it turned out to be mostly useless.

My coolest character ever was Ahab. He was a Bard. He had a whole bunch of substitution things from UA that let him have a much higher focus on nature and let him have an Animal Companion: Queequeg the Crocodile. I was also going into Thrall to Dagon (the big water demon guy in one issue of Dragon). I also had Undead Leadership because of my astronomical Charisma score, and funded a boat for us. Using my awesome social skills I convinced the party to become pirates with me as captain. Then we got the boat and the skeleton crew, and we became the Phantom Raiders. The DM went along with the pirate thing really well.

My coolest character? Would have to be Skrissa, my drow/nightmare lycanthrope--rogue 18/shadow dancer 10/fighter 4/shadow blade 1. I actually hand engineered her lycanthrope advancement so that she gained nightmare abilities/strength/and such slowly as she leveled. The group was well on it's way to killing Lolth when the DM had to leave town. At that point i'd long ago lost Lolth as my diety and picked up a much meaner one....Hera.

It's all lolth's fault ya' know. She shouldn't've asked me to kill a character my nightmare side liked. lol

I loved this character not because she was strong--which compared to most of the party she wasn't, but because of the stories. And it was fun finding sneaky ways to killthings. It only technically sucked when that monster started shadowing me in the etheral realm. I had to start using shadows more. But I enjoy twists and difficulties like this...makes for better role play.

I'd have to say that my personal favorite is Fixer, a 5th-level, mithril-bodied warforged artificer 3/swordsage 2, with the 1st-level warforged artificer substitution level and 16+ in Dex, Int, and Cha.

Studying the Desert Wind, Diamond Mind, and Shadow Hand disciplines, he uses Two-Weapon Fighting and Weapon Finesse to fight with a rapier with his primary, and either a short sword or his bare fist as the secondary.

Get Mithril Fluidity, that warforged gauntlet component, and the 5th-level warforged artificer level (that enables the creation of weapon familiars), and he'll be smacking his opponents around with style and a witty sidekick.

I have two; one in 2E the other in 3.5.

2E was Bronwin the theif. I don't remember his stats, but do remember that he got bonus XP once when he went into a temple with his party and successfully stole 100GP from the offering plates and killed 6 various level fighters w/o an attack roll! The fighters were in a tent the mage cast burning hands on and Bronwin did a tumble check to use his daggers to stake the flaps down to the ground trapping everyone inside. (in hindisght, not sure why the fighters didn't just cut the canvas and escape)

3.5 was Orin the Naked Brawler. He was a Dwarven fighter that somehow invariably lost his weapons and clothes in a fight and still managed to beat the monsters to death with his bare hands.

My two favorite characters I've played so far, personality-wise, are Mephistopheles Foolsdark from 3.5, and a halfling fighter/thief named Ripper back in 1st/2nd Ed.

Mephistopheles Foolsdark is a rogue with a few levels of swashbuckler and fighter cuz he likes to fight with a spiked chain. His personality is a mix of Hannibal Lecter and Garak the Tailor from Deep Space 9, with a bit of the Cheshire Cat thrown in - he has Int 17 and a CN alignment. He's a twisted, smiling bastard, but he has his own warped but extremely deep sense of honor. He's more likely to do something good than bad, but it's best not to count on it, because he's seriously unpredictable.
His father owned a company that hired out caravan guards, and he learned all sorts of interesting skills travelling around the trade routes. He now considers himself to be a professional thief, guard, and traveller, and sees himself as an artist at whatever he does. He joined a mostly Lawful Good party on a whim, just because he found them amusing, and thought the lady paladin/cleric was interesting.
He gets a kick out of debating philosophy with her and the paladin that leads the party, and playing harmless head games with them just to break them out of their rigid thinking and expand their horizons.
Oddly enough, he often finds himself playing the moral conscience of the party.

Ripper was a halfling thief in first edition - he actually started out as a premade character in a pick-up game I jumped in on. He started out at about 8th level, and had two magical daggers and a ring of jumping.
Later on, I revamped him into a fighter/thief and he found a sun bladebastard sword.
He was the largest halfling you ever saw, built like a body builder. People often mistook him for a skinny dwarf - and he certainly had the personality of a drunken dwarf. He looked and sounded like Lemmy from the band Motorhead. He loved to fight and brawl - he just didn't give a **** about anyone. Totally Id-driven. He liked to drink, and would sing really rude drinking songs in eight different languages.
In the first encounter of the original pick-up game I played him in, the bad guys threw a torch in through a busted window in the inn, to try to burn it down with us inside.
It was at that moment that I cemented his personality into place - with several party members at the doors and windows keeping the bad guys from getting inside, Ripper roared like a madman and jumped out the window to fight the bad guys in the street all by himself. :D The dwarf fighter who was our tank had to follow *me* out the window, lol. On several occasions during that fight, Ripper used his ring of jumping to fling himself off the top of the inn's tables onto the backs of his opponents, hanging on with his legs while he cut their throat from behind with both daggers at once.

Mechanically, my favorite character was a Swashbuckler/Swordsage with a spiked chain. The original mental excercise was to make a chain-fighter with as much guaranteed minimum damage as possible, instead of relying on extra dice of damage which could easily just all roll 1's and 2's.
So of course I started with the Swashbuckler's free weapon finesse since the spiked chain qualifies for his insightful strike.
I'd planned out the Str bonus for a 2-handed weapon, and the swashbuckler's insightful strike, but I was just randomly paging through B09S looking for interesting feats when I stumbled across the Shadow Blade feat and Assassin's Stance.
Str 14 for a +3 damage with a two-handed weapon, Int 17 for another +3 damage from the swashbuckler's insightful strike, and Dex 18 added another +4 damage because of the Shadow Blade feat... That's an automatic 10 points of damage before rolling a single die. :)
Plus 2d4 weapon damage is 12 -18 points just on a regular hit.
With, say, a flaming weapon, another 1d6 is 13-24.
Under sneak attack conditions, Assassin's Stance gives another 2-12 sneak attack damage for 15-36 points. If I can get a full-attack on a sneak, that's 30-72 damage, without even using a swordsage maneuver.
(Gods forbid I actually managed to crit on both sneak attacks...)
Combine the spiked chain, the Shadow Hand teleport maneuvers, and the Desert Wind fire-breathing stuff, and I was everywhere, slapping everything.
Plus, he was a seriously muti-purpose kind of guy - even though he was an arse-kicking second-line combatant, he was also a full-fledged skill monkey and even managed to be a second-rate healer as well.

my current cool ones?

3.5 D&D - "Shump" the magical vagrant of Parrot Island. a level 5 warlock driven slightly mad from the infernal whispers, abandoned as a child for being an engine of destruction, raised in the harsh slums, violent and self-destructive, adventurer by trade because he cannot get a job otherwise, self-proclaimed "King of the Monkeyfolk". a silly character created after hearing "D&D characters are the world's most well-armed hobos", he then grew as his own personality.

currently working for Lavinia Vanderboren as an on/off source of income. leisure time normally involves honing his skills with his eldritch blast & earthen grasp, playing with the pet monkey he rescued Mr.ChimChim, scouring the bazaars for magic trinkets and tending to his old mule, Sebastian.

BASIC D&D - Abraham Dollco, level 1 magic-user (almost level 2! glee!). exiled from his country, he was in search for fame and treasure. he hired some locals to go exploring an old mineshaft and after losing almost all them (and having one of them permanently blinded) he was wracked with grief and is angry at his foolhardiness. he is now followed by the 2 survivors (the blind one and the 2nd is more of an aid at this point) as he is repenting for his mistakes by trying to cure the blind. generally an upbeat fellow, Abe sets himself apart from other mages with his skill as a dagger-fighter in addition to his knowledge of the arcane. and is often seen with a bandolier of 12 daggers of various makes slung on his shoulder and a tome or two under his arms. his most prized possessions are a wand of paralysis he found in the mineshaft, holding those few precious charges until needed and a +1 dagger, both are always at his hips, ready to be drawn.

currently exploring the Caves of Chaos near the Keep on the Borderlands after hearing of powerful magic being there. how he managed to survive is still a mystery.

overall coolest/fav? 2nd ed ADnD - Edward the Berserker. a fighter from 2nd edition who's simple mind and happy-go-lucky attitude belied his more brutal and violent side. a bit jaded by combat, he would wade in, greataxe in hand and deal death to all that would harm his comrades. ridiculously lucky in his rolls when needed he thought of himself as indestructible. one of my first characters, quite simple and just lots of fun.

retired and got married with a lady-friend due to convenience for both of them, not lovers, but very good friends. i reimagined him for both 3rd & basic and he was/still is lots of fun. waiting for the right 4th ed campaign to happen so i can import Ed into that one.

Hmm I think my favorite charcter woul have to be Rogue-8/Assassin-6/Ninja-6
All those bonuses that stack up with sneak attacks I had to borrows evernyones d6s just to do roll damage then if I criticaled the DM would sigh and practically just take the monster off he board. I think my highest damage with one attack was close to 400. Its was awsome....The DM hated my character....I even had a bounty....lol I killed the bounty hunter....oops yeah sorry anyway thats my fav character.

I wonder why most of the people here describe the "coolness" of their characters by listing the levels of the classes they had instead of listing the personality of them. Maybe its a bit easier to differentiate in german because "Der Charakter" is the personality. Describing how someone reacts and feels is going to make "us others" have a better picture from the character than a block of statistics.

Here is my most memorable character:
Lorendelill was a pretty and young girl who was trained for deception but escaped her prison and wandered through the land until she reached the neighboring country. There she worked in a theatre until she got involved with some "do gooders" who were trying to make sense of some veiled threats of demons (including "infiltrator demons" who pose as humans) and the end of the world and such. Life in the group was not really easy because the "other girl" didnt like her due to the fact that she also knew how to play some instruments, so there was quite a lot of rivalry between the two although Loren didnt really care about that. Her true desire was to spread happiness and fight the evil that seemed to loom on the horizon. All the attention she gained through her looks were not really wanted (unless it was for a stage performance at the theatre).
The character is memorable because of several facts:
a. The campaign had us using other languages for the mother tongues of different countries. Since Lorendelill came from Rem she spoke with a Rem-accent (Rem = french) and that is how I got to talk in all the roleplaying (and we had a lot of that).
b. The difficulties I had in getting a working relationship with the other members of the group got me involved in it quite a lot. I have written quite a few pages of descriptive monologues / text to manage that relationship and it involved a few roleplaing sessions with other players in addition to our regular weekly meetings.

Sometimes characters are like fast cars - they're cool because they're all sleek and tricked out, and they perform like a race car in whatever they're built to do, whether it's a rogue sneaky enough to hide from infrared cameras and motion sensors while singing and dancing, a fighter who kills ten men just tying his shoes in the morning, or a wizard who farts ice storms.

Other characters are cool because they're like that beat-up old Chevy you've driven for years - they have history, they have stories. They're memorable not necessarily for their ability to kick butt, but because of their personality and character.

And some are different combinations of both.

My halfling thief Ripper left a trail of legendary antics behind him wherever he went, but he couldn't have pulled off those shenanigans if he didn't have the stats to make the rolls involved.

Ark has been and always will be, almost the exact same since 1st-20th level. The only change is in stats and he got married at one point, DMPCs don't get any of that fancy stuff you call "character development."

Mad_Jack

07-16-08, 06:27 PM
Yeah, but what makes him memorable is not the bunch of stats, but the stories you created with them.

Actually, back in 1st and 2nd Ed., a score of 16 in your primary ability was pretty big.
A character with a pair of 16's was a rarity, and pretty badass.
A halfling thief with a 16 Str was pretty much unheard of - demi-humans had racial maximums back then, and 16 was it for halfling Str.

And then Ripper scored a pair of gloves of ogre power, and his Str went up to 18/00.
+6 damage was just an insane amount back then, especially for a thief.

Back then, backstab multiplied weapon damage rather than adding +d6's, so Ripper would only be doing d4's with his daggers. It was only his crazy Str score and some heavy magic on his daggers that let him hold his own (nevermind kick ass) in a fight.
Unlike 3.5 or 4th, thieves in AD&D weren't expected to deal damage every round - backstab actually required that you were behind the target and that it was unaware of you, so it was only Ripper's stats that let him do more than spend two or three rounds sneaking around before getting in his one shot.

I've grown instantly attached to my recent creation: Mzpopil the CN Halfling Cleric of Olidimmarra. He's a Cleric 5/Fortune's Friend 5.

My favorite phrase when I play him: "That didn't happen *re-rolls*"

His party role is both healer and Tank, he has more Armor than the Paladin and nearly as much HP (I rolled better).

i think my character that was supposed to be played for a competition last year (but didnt get to. argh) was pretty fly. a human Wizard/Incantatrix dual-wand wielder

it focused on wands of Enervation, and thanks to the incantatrix ability, could drain about 16 levels a round (but only for about 4 shots) every time ive brought him to a visiting game, he's dropped jaws and BBEG's left and right.

ive also got a Blue Slaad Master of the Unseen Hand which should be -really- fun

Because it's really hard to be awesome when you can die from an overenthusiastic hug.
