Coolest Encounters you can remember... [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-18-07, 09:52 PM What are some of the coolest encounters you can remember? I'm setting up a one-night adventure, and I want to throw in a couple of cool, unique, and most of all, FUN encounters.

For example:

- A cool fight on a Pirate ship - lots of swinging from masts, sliding down sails, etc
- A chase on horses / wagons. One guy rolled a 1 during a jump=faceplant!

Looking foward to hearing cool ideas!

07-18-07, 09:57 PM I remember one time my dad was dming me when I was playing a father-son combo and we had a falling fight with a demon in the underdark (kinda like that fight between gandalf and the balrog) which was very cool but I eventually killed it when we landed because I used it as a mat lol!

07-18-07, 11:01 PM Final encounter of the campaign facing the vile warlord who had been plaguing the land and harassing our PCs. After we entered the city it rose into the air and the various sections of the city began falling away as we rushed to the center (the warlord's keep). Faced the warlord on the roof of his keep as the world descended into chaos around us. Very cool scene.

07-19-07, 01:21 AM The whole party crammed inside of a huge tobaggon sled we stole from a frost giant, charging down the mountainside trying not to hit anything, while everyone who isn't steering shoots at the BBEG we are chasing down the hill.

The party is crossing a bridge over an infinite gulf, when suddenly a whole pack of zombies and wights who had been clinging to the underside of the bridge climb up and attack us from all sides.

Standing on the beach, trying to fight off waves of manscorpions, as their kraken buddy swings its tentacles at us from offshore.

My first DM kicked ass.

07-19-07, 01:30 PM oh god... the encounter i have isn't so much "cool" as... "incredibly f'ed up"
i had this one DM and he was alright, but whenever we got to arguing or fighting in the group, he would bring out the shark-elf
it was a cross between (guess what) a shark and an elf, but that wasnt the scary part, this thing had a d*ck that was like three feet long, and the DM threaten us with **** rape.
nobody ever actually GOT raped, but it was a good way to keep us from messing up the quests.

07-19-07, 03:38 PM I once had a fight in a room filled with lava pools and crevices...and every few turns big cracks in the ground would errupt with fire!! While the party fought a half-celestial paladin and his minions.

07-19-07, 04:09 PM I remeber when I was playing in my dads game and we were facing a bunhc of hezrous. We killed the Hezrou but my brother sent I think at least one to another plane via prismatic ray.

Then my dad brought in a Balor. The fighter went toe to toe with the big thing and he only took 9 pts of damage because of the stone skin and other buffs the wiz and the druid put on him. Then my brother comes into the fight and rolls a nat 20, which was like the only 20 he had rolled in the entire game, and the balor went poof into a cloud of dust because of the disinegrate effect of the sword my bro had. He was playing a monk with whirlwind frenzy feat.

We were fighting monsterous crabs which were extremely underpowered compared to our party, so we decided to have some fun with them.

We hadn't eaten yet, so our Cleric and Wizard had an idea: boiled crabs.

Cleric: I cast create water targeted over the crabs.
DM: the crabs our completely soaked in water.
Wizard: Maximized Fireball!
NPC ship capt: Soup's on! :D

07-19-07, 07:54 PM Maybe not the coolest, but certainly the most memorible encounter for the group was against the much feared owlbear. The group, of four, was just a few xp shy of level 8 so I decided to have them run afowl so trouble while on the way back to town. having never used owlbears before I had them happen upon a a small cluster of five owlbears in the forest. It started out fine and the group killed four of the owlbears in three rounds, but suddenly I started rolling fantastic and the last owlbear was tearing the party to shreds, killing the ranger and mortally wounding the cleric. The ninja and the fighter ended up fleeing with the ranger's corpse and the passed up cleric.

After that whenever there would be a hard won battle the party would compare it the Dread Owlbear, and after the ranger was raised from the dead he took Magical Beast as a favored enemy and vowed revenge on the owlbear.

In a different epic campain the player choose to play the same character and while in battling the Empire at the Center of the World the party encountered the Emperor's champion, a 40th level Owlbear Barbarian, and in fact the same owlbear that had slain the ranger so long ago. After the party defeated the Emperor and escape to the surface the ranger left the party, saying that his vow had been fulfilled and that he was going off to the deep woods of the world. A touching moment for us all,
