| Sulaco11-13-06, 04:21 PM | Having recently acquired a Thundertusk Cavalry (http://www.trollandtoad.com/images/products/pictures/149554.jpg) miniature and want to make a PC to go with it. Anyone have any source or suggestion for the cost of a trained Dire Boar mount? And on the topic, what other creatures have people used as mounts and how would you cost them? |
| CharlieRock11-13-06, 04:26 PM | We used an elephant once to reload our catapult ... ... I think this is the system we used. 400gp for Hvy Warhorse (2CR). This was 200gp per CR for common mount. x2 for uncommon, x4 for rare, x8 for very rare , x16 for unique (we never tried buying anything more than rare, though). Remember your old school frequencys? Good Luck! :D |
| CharlieRock11-13-06, 04:37 PM | *ungh* Think I got a hernia lifting all those books off this <holds out the 1ed MM> ,it was even underneath my GURPS Basic Set. :D Dog-blasted! No, Dire Boars ... well, giant boars were uncommon... so, maybe a Dire Boar would be rare? Then ,that'll cost him ...1600gp? Sound about right? :whatsthis |
| Lorianne11-13-06, 05:18 PM | Let's see if I can figure this out by calculating the costs... First, you need an animal. In your case, a dire boar. Which you need to rear and train from birth. Assuming that you want to buy the animal, you'll need to pay the wages for whoever trained the beast for you. Let's just assume that this has been done by a 3nd level human expert (IMO, you need someone with experience for training a dire animal). He/she could have a Handle Animal skill modifier of about +14 (8 points, 3 skill focus, 2 animal affinity, 1 cha). For rearing a direboar (7HD), you need to succeed at a DC 22 Handle Animal check. Which the expert will be able to get on an average roll. Training the boar for 'combat riding' would need a DC 20 Handle Animal check, also fairly easy to make. The price in this is probably going to go into the time it takes to raise it. An animal tender/groom, according to the DMG, costs about 15cp a day. I don't exactly know how long a boar takes to grow to full adulthood and get it's training, but let's assume 2 years. .15*(2*365) = 109.5gp (wages trainer) .5*(2*365) = 365gp (stabling for 2 years) ...gp (cost of piglett) The only thing I can't find anywhere are the costs to get a piglett... You'll have to figure that out yourself :S |

You'll have to figure that out yourself :S Nice! Thanks. :) What if we assume two variables: first, let's assume the piglet will cost 75 gp (same as a light horse) and that the trainer will likely be rearing a whole litter (lets say 10) at a time. Any suggestion based on that? |
| CharlieRock11-13-06, 05:39 PM | Pigs are 3gp here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/wealthAndMoney.htm) |
| Lorianne11-13-06, 05:47 PM | @CharlieRock Ah, thanks! I should have thought about that... Then it would all add up to: 477.5gp. Or 1213.5pg for three piglets. @Sulaco The PHB specifically states that you can only rear three animals at the same time though... Training takes up at least 3 hours a day too. So 3 would be the maximum. |
| CharlieRock11-13-06, 05:48 PM | Yeah, gotta let the other Dire Boarlets go wild (hog wild?) and fill up those wandering monster tables :D Edit: What animal trainer in his right (money making) mind would throw in two extra dire boars for 6gp when he can make at least 477.5gp-1,600gp (market depending,LoL) ?:whatsthis |
| Gahread11-14-06, 01:30 AM | Glancing at the Arms & Equipment Guide... holy cow, Lorianne! AE&G prices a trained Dire Boar mount, sans equipment, at 475 GPs! They have a bunch of other exotic mounts in there too. If you can ride it, it can be a mount. |
| CharlieRock11-14-06, 02:47 AM | I always wanted the AE&G :( (my gamestore sold out) |
| Dunamin11-14-06, 03:24 AM | As, mentioned, there's a great deal of exotic mounts listed in the Arms & Equipment Guide. However, I would be cautious with the listed prices, though - seems to me like elephants and rhinos trained for battle should be more expensive than indicated there. |
| CharlieRock11-14-06, 03:31 AM | <Remembers a mishap involving an elephant, a catapult, an injured animal handler, and a critical miss> ...well, that one wasn't 'well' trained :nonono: |
